March 2011 Dear Friends of Concord Academy, We are very excited about this year’s Benefit for Financial Aid on Saturday, April 2. The event has already received tremendous support from the CA community and area businesses through dozens of one-of-a-kind donations, direct financial contributions, and the time and talent of a small army of volunteers. We hope that you’ll be able to join us and the many other CA supporters for a fun and memorable evening that will include a cocktail hour, silent auction, raffle, dinner, live auction, and entertainment by our own CA students. We hope you enjoy previewing the items on the following pages. You can use this book to choose the items that interest you and then plan your bids accordingly. If you’d like to attend and have not replied yet, please RSVP, either by responding to your email invitation or by email to [email protected]. If you’re unable to attend, you can still participate by purchasing raffle tickets at www.concordacademy.org and/or by bidding on items by proxy. Just email [email protected] or fax your Proxy Bid Form to (978) 402-2210 by 2:00 p.m. EDT on April 1. We will assign a proxy bidder to represent you on the night of the auction. You could help change a young person’s life by contributing to the Benefit. The proceeds from this event directly contribute to scholarship awards for Concord Academy students in need. Twenty-five percent of students at Concord Academy receive financial aid, and for Brandon Biaterana and many others, their lives are transformed by this opportunity. Strengthening financial aid enriches the learning experience for all our students and faculty. We are grateful for your commitment to CA’s financial aid program, and we hope to see you on April 2! Sincerely, Karen Manor Metzold P’11 Susan Miller P’08,’12 Lucinda Wright P’11

“Even though I put myself into a situation at CA where I was pushed against the ropes academically, I had the genuine love and support of teachers who gave me two things I never would have found myself: the passion and the confidence to learn.”

"Wisdom," an 11" x 14" fine art print by Ara Hagopian depicts the calm understandingthat comes when a person receives a range of life experiences, and then processes whathe or she has learned. Wisdom is not simply the default result of diverse circumstances, rather, it's the long, smooth arc of quietly adapting oneself through each learned lessonor observed situation. Own this beautiful metallic quadtone print on Kodak paper, which is double-matted to a 24" x 28" black wood frame. It is signed, titled, andnumbered edition, #1/200. Ara Hagopian is a prize-winning artist from NorthChelmsford. His pen-and-ink "The Magnificent Recovery" was selected by theMuseum of Fine Arts, Boston for their 2008 summer art auction. Eighty-five of hisworks can be viewed at TheLiterateShow.com.

Kate Emlen did this 8" x 12" monotype during a residency at the Vermont StudioCenter last year. It was painted onto a plexiglass plate and printed on damped BFKRives. Because the image is transferred on an intaglio press, it is technically considereda print even though it is one of a kind. Kate is a member of Prince Street Gallery inNew York. She shows at the George Marshall Store Gallery in York, Maine; theCaldbeck Gallery in Rockland, Maine; the Courthouse Gallery in Ellsworth, Maine;and Big Town Gallery in Rochester, Vermont, where she is currently showing in atwo-person show until May 1. Barolo, Barbaresco, and Brunello. This three pack "Collector Kit" in a decorativewooden box, consists of one bottle each of 2006 Macarini, Barolo "Bricco Boschis,"2006 Produttori, Barbaresco "Torre," and 2005 Argiano, Brunello di Montalcino.Together they represent the most collected pure-varietal wines of Italy, competing withthe Grand Crus of Burgundy as well as the cult favorites of California. These are Italy'sgreatest red wines, capable of aging over decades, attracting loads of attention, andproviding aromas not found elsewhere in the world. They are among the mostcollectible wines of not just Italy but of wine connoisseurs everywhere. This tasting isdesigned to provide individual wines that exemplify their respective categories so thatyou can educate yourself on the key characteristics of each. As with anything winerelated, they are better enjoyed in the company of others, so invite some friends overand start pulling your corks.

In Spain, winemakers often use the Spanish word elaborar (to elaborate) rather thanfabricar (to produce/make) when describing the Spanish winemaking philosophy. Thisrelates to the view that the winemaker acts as more of a nurturer of the grapes and winerather than as a producer. Enjoy these two bottles of Las Rocas, 2003 Garnacha VinasViejas de San Alejandro, grown from the grand old vines of garnacha in the rockymountains of Aragon. Then compare with a bottle of 2006 Spanish Palacios Petalos delBierzo, whose vintner, Alvaro Palacios, has been named by Wine and Spirits to be oneof the most influential winemakers in the world.

This wine company produces limited quantities of wines from grapes grown from thetop growers of Santa Barbara County. This 2005 bottle of Margerum M5 is aChateauneuf-du-Pape style blend using five grape varieties. Robert Parker gives it 90points and describes it as "a gorgeous blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault, and Counoise. Margerum's 2005 M5 is full of fun and character. Its deep plum/rubycolor and lovely sweet, smokey, black cherry and herb aromas are accompanied by amedium-bodied wine displaying deep, concentrated flavors that bring to mind anopen-air Provencal market. A heck-of-a good value."

Greeks vs. Romans? Old news.Christians vs. Lions? Too messy.Kennedy vs. Kruschev? Too political. It's our beloved Boston Red Sox vs. those Yankees from NY!

What better way to celebrate the dawn of a new season of hope and opportunity than bywatching our Sox trounce the Yanks on Opening Day? Four tickets for April 6 at 2:05p.m. can be yours in the State Street Pavilion which features not only some of the finestand most comfortable sight lines at Fenway Park, but also access to the club lounge anddining area, two full bars, in-seat food and beverage services and flat screen TVslocated throughout the Pavilion so you never miss a pitch. These tickets were chosenby the Red Sox head office especially for the CA Parents Benefit for Financial Aid andare never available to the general public. This is truly a chance of a lifetime!

Let Wikipedia remind you that "Since the inception of the wild card team and an addedDivision Series, these American League East rivals have squared off in the AmericanLeague Championship Series three times, with the Red Sox winning in 2004. Inaddition, the teams have twice met in the last regular season series of a season todecide the league title, in 1904 (when the Red Sox won) and in 1949...The teams alsofinished tied for first in 1978, when the Yankees won a high-profile one-game playofffor the division title. The 1978 division race is memorable for the Red Sox having helda 14-game lead over the Yankees more than halfway through the season. Similarly, the2004 American League Championship Series is notable for the Yankees leading 3games to 0 and ultimately losing a best of seven series. The Red Sox comeback wasthe only time in baseball history that a team has come back from an 0-3 deficit to win aseries."

But, then again, the citizens of Red Sox Nation know that miracles can happen.

Silent Auction Rules

The Silent Auction will open for bidding at 6:00 p.m. and will close by 7:15 p.m. A bid sheet for each silent auction item will specify the minimum starting bid.

To place a bid, record your assigned bidder number and the bid amount on the next

available blank line on the bid sheet.

When the Silent Auction closes, the highest bidder will win the item. A bidder in the process of submitting a bid at the time of the silent auction closing may complete the bid. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the silent auction supervisor exercises final discretion with respect to the winning bidder.

NOTE: All items are categorized and presented at the discretion of the auction committee in order to maximize contributions to the financial aid program at Concord Academy.

Live Auction Rules

The Live Auction will begin at approximately 7:45 p.m. and will continue until all items have been auctioned.

The auctioneer reserves the right to announce conditions of a sale at any time during the bidding.
