Aid Across the OceanThe Red Cross Responds to Disasters Around the World - Nov 11, 2013

(YHU\�\HDU��GLVDVWHUV��FRQßLFWV�and health emergencies affect millions of people worldwide. The American Red Cross along with more than 185 other National Societies within the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is responding every day, providing relief and aid where it is needed most. From extreme weather such as a drought in Paraguay and the 0DUVKDOO�,VODQGV��WR�ßRRGLQJ�DQG�devastation caused by typhoons in Vietnam and the Philippines, the American Red Cross has mobilized quickly to provide aid and relief to communities around the world affected by disaster.

With sustained winds of over 145 miles per hour and gusts of up to 170 miles per hour, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) is recognized as the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year. The storm affected 9.5 million people across 36 provinces. Meanwhile, 1,400 evacuation centers are housing more than 330,000 people left homeless by the storm. Philippine Red Cross volunteers across the region continue to UHSRUW�VLJQLÞFDQW�GDPDJH�DQG�the extent of the devastation continues to unfold. While communications in the Philippines is limited and many areas remain inaccessible, Philippine Red Cross volunteer rescue and relief teams are working quickly to provide assistance to communities with search and rescue, as well as distributing food and relief supplies to survivors.

Since early August, many communities across the

Philippines were still recovering and rebuilding in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Utor, Trami and most recently a 7.2 magnitude earthquake centered around island of Bohol, north of Mindanao. In the aftermath of the earthquake, approximately 270,000 people in Bohol were living in makeshift shelters that would soon face the incoming danger as Typhoon Haiyan made landfall.

“Assessment of the damage and destruction has begun, search and rescue teams have been deployed and emergency supplies are ready to be distributed to those in the worst hit areas. Thousands of people are likely to be left without food, shelter and water – this is a double blow for the survivors for the earthquake in Bohol and Cebu, who were already struggling to get back on their feet,” said Bernd Schell of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies who is currently in the Philippines. With a long history of partnership with the Philippines Red Cross, the

American Red Cross mobilized quickly to deploy four disaster specialists with expertise in relief, information management and telecommunications to support relief efforts. The Red Cross has also activated its family tracing services to help people locate missing family members. As more information becomes available, the American Red Cross remains in close contact with the Philippine Red Cross standing by to provide more assistance in the days ahead.

Typhoon Haiyan has also made landfall in Vietnam causing extensive damage in the same areas where thousands of people were left homeless following Typhoons Wutip and Nari. The American Red Cross currently has a volunteer on the ground in Vietnam assisting with relief efforts from the previous storms. In the days to come, the American Red Cross will closely monitor and work with our partners around the world to monitor the growing needs and to provide assistance in response to Typhoon Haiyan.
