Education

I am currently in my 3rd and final year of a BA Journalism degree at Leeds Metropolitan University and on course for a 2:1 result. Throughout my course I have studied Print, Television, Radio journalism and Website Development. I have been taught how to communicate with different audiences concisely and effectively through these different channels to professional standards.

The course has created the opportunity to understand the disciplines and ethos of journalism. It has prepared me for the rapid pace of change in the field, as communications technology continues to open new forms of access and increases the potential for interactivity. The challenge of content creation and development in this changing environment has been a key part of the learning experience.

The course has also introduced me to the role of the public relations businesses and the work of spokespersons for a range of groups that supply the media with information and how they must respond to the scrutiny of journalists.

I achieved B grade A-Levels in English Language and Media Studies, and a C grade in Business Studies.I also hold ten B-C grade GCSE’s.

Skills

As a potential Journalist, I have learned to communicate in writing and through verbal presentation to a high standard. My course modules such as Television journalism, Magazine journalism, Sports journalism and Public Relations have taught me how to convey stories to a wide range of audiences through multiple media platforms with different styles and technical demands.

As part of a module at University, I helped create a Yorkshire football magazine and have paired this with a blog and Twitter account which is updated regularly with debates and issues that are prominent in football today.

Whilst undertaking work placements at communications consultancy Smith Associates and PR company 7.4 Communications I was forced to quickly understand different communication strategies and the Pharmaceuticals Market respectively. In both placements held the responsibility of editing and shrinking down reports for clients in order to make them more concise and effective.

I hold an NPLQ Qualification which allows me to be employed as a Lifeguard at public swimming pools. As a Lifeguard, working as a team and being able to communicate with fellow Lifeguards are integral parts of looking after swimmers safely.  I am also an enthusiastic sportsman, and play football and tennis throughout the year. I have held a full UK Drivers License for over three years, and have a wide range of computer skills.

In 2008 I worked at London based Communication Consultancy firm Smith Associates researching the business values of major companies. I also gained experience at 7.4 Communications in July. At this Pharmaceutical Marketing Company I was employed to re-write reports and research competitors within their market. In February I undertook a week’s work experience with Environmental Shipping PR Company Blue Communications, where I researched and compiled reports on client competitors.
