Maurice Yaméogo

Maurice Yaméogo the president of Burkina Faso(December 31, 1921 – September 9, 1993) was the first President of the Republic of Upper Volta, now called Burkina Faso. He proclaimed the independence of the country on August 5, 1960 and also tried (but failed) to create a union between Cote d'Ivoire and Upper-Volta. On January 3, 1966, he left the Presidency because of a nation-wide strike. Maurice Yameogo wanted to be a priest but he finally left the Small Seminar of Pabre. Maurice fell in love with Felecite Zagre who later became his wife. But, on October 17, 1965, he would get married with Suzanne de Monaco, a young Ivorian woman.

National Football teamThe Burkina Faso national football team, nicknamed Les Etalons (The Stallions), is the national team of Burkina Faso and is controlled by the Fédération Burkinabé de Foot-Ball. They were known as the Upper Volta national football team until 1984, when Upper Volta became Burkina Faso. Their best finish in the African Nations Cup was fourth in 1998, when they hosted the tournament. Even though they missed World Cup 2006, they were the only team in the qualification who beat the group winners Ghana, 1-0 at home. Burkina Faso has never qualified for the world cup and they best they’ve done in the African Nations is 4th place
