Credited with inventing andpioneering the use of plastic pipe forwater distribution, the company hasgrown spectacularly since its formationin 1955. Wavin has also led the way inthe development and production ofunplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC-U) underground drainage and seweragesystems, under the Osma brand nameand has long been one of the marketleaders in this sector of Britain’sconstruction industry.

Wavin prides itself on the quality ofthe products and services it provides,and has achieved BS EN ISO 9002Registered Firm Status. All Wavinproducts are manufactured to complywith the requirements of the relevantBritish and European standards; whereno suitable standard exists, thecompany seeks certification for theproducts from independent testingauthorities, i.e. the WRC or the BBA.Wavin was also the first in the plasticpipe industry to be accredited with BSEN ISO 14001, the new British Standardfor environmental management.

Technical sales staff are on-hand toanswer queries and give directassistance to engineers. The salesmenare trained to understand the productsthey sell, and the ways in which they willbe used: they are equipped with laptopcomputers giving full on-line access toinformation held on the technical andcustomer database at the Chippenhamheadquarters.

The sales team is supported by aTechnical Design Department with fullCAD facilities, able to provide designand engineering drawings, schedules ofcomponents, and detailed technicaladvice. Data and drawings can betransferred to customers electronically,saving time and ensuring absoluteaccuracy.

Order fulfilment is also taken veryseriously indeed. The sales officehandles over 300 orders every day. Allorders are processed within 24 hours,and increasingly, orders and invoicesare processed by electronic datainterchange (EDI) ensuring fast,accurate communication.

A computerised distribution systemcontrols the despatch and routing ofthe transport fleet to calculate the mostefficient load and journey plan, anddeliveries are made within three to fivedays of the date the order was placed,either directly to site or to the merchantyard.

No site is too distant and thecompany’s distribution network coversthe length and breadth of the country.

The Wavin manufacturing sites atChippenham, Wiltshire and Brandon,County Durham, can produce over 30miles of pipes and gutters and 100,000specialist fittings in a single day.

This production capacity is possibledue to a continuing programme ofinvestment in state-of-the-art injectionmoulding machines and extrusion lines.Both of the manufacturing plants arehighly automated, and are equipped withthe most up-to-date microprocessorcontrolled machines.

Strict quality control systems are in place at every stage of themanufacturing process. Ultrasoundscanners are used to ensure that everypipe conforms to the most exactingstandards particularly with regard toconsistent wall thickness. Injectionmoulded fittings are manufactured to finetolerances enabling precision designfeatures to be incorporated.

The ‘raw’ moulded fittings areinspected by hand and carefully handassembled and finished to ensureconsistent performance under the mostdemanding conditions.

OsmaDrain underground

drainage system

The OsmaDrain system is designedfor use in gravity drainage installationsat depths of up to 10m, with outfalls intoLocal Authority sewers, privatetreatment plants, and cesspools, and forsurface water drainage into soakaways orwatercourses.

OsmaDrain is manufactured fromunplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC-U),and complies with BS EN 1401-1:1998and with BS 4660:1989.

Available in diameters of 82, 110 and160mm, and in lengths of 3 and 6m, theOsmaDrain system includes a widerange of bends, junctions, and otherfittings, including inspection chambers,and adaptors allowing connection totraditional cast iron and clayware drains.

PVC-U provides superior self-cleansing properties at low velocitiesand this can often help to reduceexcavation depths and permit the use ofsmaller diameter pipes, as well aspossibly obviating the need for apumped system.

The range also includes slottedOsmaDrain pipes in 110 and 160mmdiameters in 6m lengths. These pipes arenormally used in french drainapplications, for example drainingrainwater or run-off from paved or hardsurfaced areas such as roads, car parksand airfields. Slotted pipes can also beused to dispose of the effluent fromseptic tanks by subsurface irrigation.

Osma UltraRib foul and

surface water sewer system

Osma UltraRib is a Solid WallConcentric External Rib-ReinforcedUnplasticized - PVC sewer pipe designedfor adoptable sewer installations. Thepipe has a smooth inner surface and isreinforced externally with a pattern ofintegral, concentric ribs which provideexceptional axial rigidity and enhancedradial strength without a significantincrease in weight.

The system employs fully socketedjoints for security and ease ofinstallation. The design of the socketprevents accidental displacement of theO ring during installation, and theresulting joint provides a flush fitbetween the internal bore of the pipeand the fitting. The assembled jointprovides built-in accommodation fordifferential movement without damage.

Osma UltraRib is manufactured tocomply with the requirements of WaterIndustry Standard WIS 4-35-01 and isKitemarked under the BSI ProductCertification Scheme. The system hasbeen awarded Agrément Certificatesnumber 98/3472 and 89/RO46 coveringall foul and surface water applications.

The pipe is available socketed andplain ended in a choice of lengths. Thereis a full range of bends, junctions, andother fittings, including adaptorsallowing connection to, for example,cast iron and clayware drains.

Wavin TwinWall is a cost effective pipesystem intended for use as a directalternative to all non-pressurised gravitydrain systems other than where LocalAuthority adoption is necessary. Smallerdiameters are manufactured from highdensity polyethylene and larger diametersmanufactured from polypropylene. Typicalapplications include highway filter andcarrier drains, rail track drainage, andunadoptable surface water drains, forexample, on industrial or commercialdevelopments.

The pipe is available in nominaldiameters of 150, 225, 300, 375, 450,500 and 600mm and in standard 6mlengths. It may be supplied either plainfor use as a carrier drain, and either halfor fully perforated for use as filter drains.

The twin wall construction helps tomaintain flexibility and reduce thepossibility of impact damage on site.

WavinCoil is a corrugated PVC-U pipesystem which has been designed toprovide a cost effective land drainagesystem. It is quickly and easily installedusing either open cut or trenchlessmethods.

WavinCoil can be used in a variety ofcivil engineering and agriculturalsituations where its use will improve thecondition, trafficability and workabilityof soils. Typical applications includedraining ground water from agriculturalareas, small sites, parks and gardens;and preventing a build-up of groundwater in embankments and verges, orbehind retaining walls; it can also beused as a french drain in conjunctionwith a surface water drainage scheme. Inagricultural applications, a proper landdrainage scheme using WavinCoil canalleviate crop damage due towaterlogged and flooded conditions, andwill often allow planting on landpreviously unfit for agriculture.

The pipe is available plain orperforated in a range of six diameters,from 60 to 200mm. There is a matchingrange of junctions, reducers, andconnectors. WavinCoil can be used tomake gully connections to OsmaUltraRib and Wavin TwinWall surfacewater drainage systems.

The corrugated wall structureenhances the strength of the pipe,resisting damage which might occurduring handling and installation, andhelping to resist deformation due toimposed loadings from the soil.

WavinCoil complies with therequirements of BS 4962 and carries theBSI Kitemark; its use is approved by theMinistry of Agriculture Fisheries andFood (MAFF).

The Wavin PolyChannel range ofpolymer concrete channel drainageproducts offer a complete andintegrated surface water drainagesystem for all applications. PolyChannelis suitable for any application wheresurface water requires transportation fordisposal or recycling from supermarketsto sports stadia, bridges to bus depots,footways to food processing, airports,hospitals, car parks as well as domesticdriveways and cycle paths.

Available in widths of 100, 150 and200mm (300mm will be availableDecember 2002), the WavinPolyChannel system offers a range offlats and slopes for medium and heavyduty applications. With a wide range ofgratings and a full range of accessoriesPolyChannel will satisfy therequirements of any channel drainageapplication.

All PolyChannel products aremanufactured from Polydyn® polyesterconcrete, which offers excellentchemical resistance, ageing resistanceand water absorption of less than 0.5%.It is strong, lightweight and easy tomachine, cut and drill on site.

The Wavin PolyChannel SK rangeprovides a good general purposesolution for all drainage situations in theclass A15 – E600 range. The channelincorporates full length anchoring ribsand the Red Dot vibration dampingsecuring system to enable secureanchorage of the grating againstvehicular override. For enhancedstrength the PolyChannel SK system issupplied with galvanised steel edgesbonded into the channel along their fulllength, and includes a wide range ofgrating options for all aesthetic andperformance requirements. Gratingsmanufactured from galvanised steel,ductile iron, composite plastic andstainless steel accommodateapplications such as footpaths, carparks,

playgrounds, shower areas, swimmingpools and garage driveways. TheNW100 SK channel is available withstainless steel edges (SKCR) for use withstainless gratings and as a shallow unit(SK Piccolo) for restricted depthconstruction, such as multi-storeycarparks or flat roof constructions.

The Wavin PolyChannel SKS range is aheavy duty channel system forapplications up to F900 loadingclassifications. Supplied as a one piecemonolithic unit the enormous strengthof the bond between frame and channeland the armour coated Class F ductilegrating, secured by the uniquePolyLock® boltless locking device,guarantees system performance forapplications such as airport and runwayuse, and heavy duty industrialapplications. The NW100 SKS system isalso available in a shallow Piccolo unitfor restricted depth.

The Wavin PolyChannel SPQ rangehas been specifically designed forapplications where exceptional dynamictraffic loadings of a compressive orvibrative nature occur. Available inNW100 and NW200 the one piecemonolithic polymer concreteconstruction provides exceptionalstrength, which is ideal for applicationssuch as motorway crossovers.

Rapid growth of urban and industrialareas has resulted in an increase inimpermeable surfaces such as roofs,highways and paved surfaces, placing ahuge burden on existing drainagenetworks and urban watercourses.Surface water run-off increases up to80% and during periods of heavy rainrun-off may exceed the capacity ofsewered systems, resulting in risks offlooding to property and to humanhealth.

Regulators (such as the EnvironmentAgency, Scottish EnvironmentProtection Agency, local authorities) arepromoting the use of Sustainable urbanDrainage Systems (SuDS) that controlrun-off to that of a greenfield site (20%).Combined with an increase in rainfalllevels and an increasing demand forwater, a new approach to surface watermanagement is required in manysituations.

The Wavin AquaCell system isdesigned to offer an integrated surfaceand stormwater run-off managementsystem. AquaCell can be used forsoakaway and storage applications inareas remote from a public sewer orwater course, and within urban, fullysewered areas to limit the impact ofdevelopment run-off. This is particularlybeneficial in areas that are liable toflooding. Modular in shape (1.0m x0.5m x 0.4m) with a capacity of 190litres, AquaCell is designed tocomplement conventional drainagesystems and control excess stormwateruntil it can either be released into thesurrounding ground or discharged backinto the conventional drainage system ata controlled rate. Typical applicationsinclude, domestic, industrial,commercial and highway for use assoakaways and storage systems, shallowsoakaways where the water table ishigh, drainage mounds, surface waterprotection in contaminated ground andfoul effluent soakaways.

In a soakaway situation the modularAquaCell system is constructed to therequired size and shape and wrapped ina permeable geotextile. This allowstemporary storage in the units and acontrolled release of water into thesurrounding ground, therefore returningthe surface water run-off to that of agreenfield site. Recent changes to Part Hof the Building Regulations incorporatethis principle with a request that prioritybe given to a soakaway option for roofand surface water drainage within anurban fully sewered area. AquaCell isNHBC approved for use as a soakaway.

If ground conditions are unsuitable fora soakaway (e.g. clay soils,contaminated land, or very high watertable), Part H requests that anattenuation system be used. Theversatile AquaCell system is constructedto form an underground storage tankwhich is wrapped in an impermeablegeomembrane. This can be installed on-line or off-line to the main drainagesystem. Stormwater is attenuated by theAquaCell structure and released backinto the drainage system or watercourseat the agreed rate for the site by meansof a flow control device, againcontrolling run-off to that of a greenfieldsite.

At only 9kg per unit, AquaCell islightweight and easy to handle on site.It’s modular construction results in easeand speed of installation, and allowsboth linear or deep installations to suitthe site conditions. Unlike some SuDSmethods, AquaCell does not use

valuable developable land, and leavesthe surface above available for gardens,landscaping, driveways or carparks.With a 95% void ratio and a surface area,which is 43% perforated, AquaCellconstructions can often be smaller thanalternative traditional methods, resultingin a versatile, effective solution tostormwater management.
