You can’t reverse sunburn once you have it, but you can use a variety of natural methods to soothe the pain and reduce inflammation. Aloe vera. Slice open a leaf from this succulent and apply the gel directly to the burn. You can also buy aloe vera gel products, but avoid those that contain lanolin, which can make the burn feel worse. Yogurt. This dairy product re-establishes pH balance and cools the skin. Apply plain, unsweetened full-fat yogurt with few additives to all sunburned areas. After the yogurt becomes warm, rinse it off with tepid water. Tea. The tannic acid in tea helps relieve sunburn pain. Soak a towel or compress in freshly brewed tea that has cooled and apply to the skin. If you’ve burned your eyelids, steep teabags in cool water and rest them on your closed eyes. Potatoes. Blend two peeled potatoes until you have a paste. Gently rub the paste on the skin. Let it dry, then rinse with cool water. A less messy option is to lay potato skins directly on the burned area. Oatmeal. Add one-half to one cup of this skin soother to cool bathwater, then soak for 15 minutes. Why? • Are there any freedoms that you think are still missing today? Why do you think that is? Why should we have these freedoms?

COF andNeighborhood News

Dear COF and NeighborhoodResidents and Family Members,During the month of June, Italked about “what our brains aremade out of;” this month of July, Iwant to talk about a powerfulpractice that we try to do on bothCircle of Friends andNeighborhood programming toimprove our brain performanceregularly. It’s a simple thing called“Meditation.”

Meditation is simply becomingmore aware of your thoughts andfeelings. When a thought comesup, instead of engaging itemotionally or intellectuallyjudging it, you acknowledge it andsend it on its way, emptying yourmind until the next thoughtsurfaces. In a sense, you act as athird-party observer of your ownthoughts. Sometimes furtherthoughts won’t surface, and you’llbe able to maintain a calmconsciousness free of interruptionfor as long as you like. Withpractice, it becomes easier to reachand maintain this quiet state.

The positive health effects ofmeditation have been welldocumented for more than 50years. Meditation lowers heartrate, blood pressure, bodytemperature and cortisol level. Itpromotes the release ofthyroid-stimulating hormone andhuman growth hormone increases

L-arginine and vasopressin levels.Arginine and vasopressin helpwith memory and learning.Meditation also reduces stress andfear and promotes clarity of mind.Like always, if you want to hearmore about this topic, don’thesitate to stop by and see me so Ican talk to you more about it.Have a good month!!!!

Congratulations to Our Employeeof the Month - Marjorie PacquingOriginally from Manila in the Philippines,

When not working, she is a big fan ofmovies, exercising and going out for dinner.Thank you for everything you do, Marjorie, andkeep up the great work!

Nurse’s NotesHow Can Older Adults

Prevent Falls? Many people who fall, even if

they are not injured, develop afear of falling.

Older adults can stayindependent and reduce theirchances of falling. They can:

• Exercise regularly. It isimportant that the exercisesfocus on increasing legstrength and improvingbalance, and that they getmore challenging over time.

• Ask their doctor orpharmacist to review theirmedicines—bothprescription and over-the-counter—to identifymedicines that may causeside effects or interactionssuch as dizziness ordrowsiness.

• Have their eyes checked byan eye doctor at least once ayear and update theireyeglasses to maximize theirvision. Consider getting apair with single visiondistance lenses for someactivities such as walkingoutside.

• Make their homes safer byreducing tripping hazardssuch as rugs, adding grabbars inside and outside thetub or shower and next tothe toilet.

To lower their hip fracture risk,

older adults can:• Get adequate calcium and

vitamin D—from foodand/or from supplements.

• Do weight bearing exercise.• Get screened and, if needed,

treated for osteoporosis.

A Message From YourTrainer Katrina!

Summer is a time for enjoying thegreat outdoors! But the summersunshine, UV rays and heat also

can bring a few dangers:• Drink plenty of fluids: Aim

to drink 6 to 8 glasses ofwater per day. By the timeyou are thirsty, your body isalready dehydrated. Forseniors, the feeling of thirstdecreases as we age, so besure to increase your waterintake.

• Pick the right outfit withaccessories: When possible, wear loose, lightweight, andlight-colored long sleeves tohelp protect your skin fromsun, while also allowing yourskin to breathe.

• Watch for heat stroke: Signsto look for includeconfusion, disorientation, dry skin, excessive tiredness, headache, lethargy, nausea, and a rapid pulse. If you orsomeone you knowexperiences these symptoms, seek medical attentionimmediately.
