A season of thankfulness for the simple things in life—things we take for granted like the air we breathe, the food we eat, the health we have, our homes, the love of family and friends, our jobs and the freedom our country offers us. There is so much to give and be thankful for (both past and present) that it’s more than we can wrap our minds around. Thanksgiving Day brings great dishes within our own homes— yes, including that great-tasting bird: turkey. So let’s talk turkey for a moment. I like it deep fried. It tastes WONDERFUL that way. If you have never tried it that way, I highly recommend you do. I would almost guarantee (almost I said) that you will not want it again any other way! So speaking of Thanksgiving and turkey ... please note our awesome Thanksgiving dining experience here at Belmont Village. (See page 2.) We will have two separate seatings for Thanksgiving. Please make your reservations in advance so we can ensure everyone will be accommodated and that we prepare the correct amount of food. Once Thanksgiving hits, we are only 30 days until Christmas 2015 at this point—Christmas being followed by the New Year the next week!! Again, we want to welcome all Belmont Village family members during the holiday season to visit with their loves ones, make plans to join in our many holiday events, and be prepared for an awesome dining experience in Josephine’s Kitchen. I would like to remind everyone about our policy regarding monetary gifting during the holiday season. We have a very generous family at Belmont Village, but it is against Belmont Village policy for employees to accept gifts or money from residents, families or vendors. However, you can make contributions in the form of check or cash to the EMPLOYEE HOLIDAY FUND to show your appreciation to the staff. If you need information about how to make a contribution, please call our Human Resources Coordinator, Lorinda Davis, or myself. Funds collected by Friday, December 11, will be used to purchase gift cards for distribution to all non-management employees at their Holiday Party. I look forward to continuing to celebrate my favorite time of year with you and creating new memories for your family!!! Ted Burfict Executive Director

Keeping You Safe& Healthy

According to the U.S. Centersfor Disease Control andPrevention:

• One-third of Americans aged65+ falls each year.

• Every 13 seconds, an olderadult is treated in theemergency room for a fall;every 20 minutes, an olderadult dies from a fall.

• Falls are the leading cause offatal injury and the mostcommon cause of nonfataltrauma-related hospitaladmissions among olderadults.

• Falls result in more than 2.5million injuries treated inemergency departmentsannually, including over734,000 hospitalizations andmore than 21,700 deaths.

• In 2013, the total cost of fallinjuries was $34 billion.

As you get older, physicalchanges and health conditions —and sometimes the medicationsused to treat those conditions —make falls more likely. Falls, withor without injury, also carry aheavy quality of life impact. Agrowing number of older adultsfear falling and, as a result, limittheir activities and socialengagements. This can result infurther physical decline, depression, social isolation, andfeelings of helplessness. Therapywith Paxxon Healthcare can help

to improve strength and balance,as well as educate you on how toprevent future falls.

Feel free to stop by the gym onthe second floor or call us at502-895-7887.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!Your Therapy Team

Musings From SylviaResident Sylvia Coman, one of

our community’s fine writers, submitted the following for yourthoughtful consideration thismonth:

Have you noted that our delightfulLibrary on the 2nd floor is stackedfull of books - as well as each Parloron each floor - that encouragesbrowsing and borrowing?

And that our Dining Room offersfinger licking cupcakes at times?

Or that I found a nativeFrenchwoman who also moved toBelmont Village St. Matthews whotirelessly worked with me eachSaturday to teach me French and tellme fascinating stories of the invasionof France in WWII.

One evening after a lesson shepaid me a lovely compliment “Sylvia,I love your French accent!” A rare bitof praise indeed!

Imagine, to have your own Frenchteacher - only at Belmont!

A Lovely Thank YouWe received numerous thank

you cards from our veterans andtheir family members after thereception and opening of ourAmerican Heroes Gallery.Including the following fromresident Sidney Blanchard:

“Speaking for myself and I’m surethe other veterans, we owe a bigthank you to Ted, Kathryn, ChefSteve and all the other helpers for atremendous evening.

Thank you again.” SidneyBlanchard

The Circle of Friends andNeighborhood have been veryactive this fall season!

Earlier in September, residentsfrom both groups attended theAlzheimer’s Association Walk toEnd Alzheimer’s. It was a nice daywith a tremendous turnout. Bothour residents and staff whoattended had a fabulous time androcked our uniquely distincttie-dye shirts.

We celebrated the end ofsummer with a picnic in CherokeePark at Hogan’s Fountain with theCircle of Friends. The groupfeasted on chicken, pasta andpotato salad and fresh fruit.
