Dear Friends, Al Boime is celebrating his 90th birthday on April 8th. He was born in Chicago, on the West side. He was the youngest with two older sisters, Norma and Bernice; who doted on him. Interestingly, there were three generations of 2 daughters, and then a son born in Al’s family. Bernice, known as Niecie, had a dear friend named Edith. Edith had a younger sister Dorothy. Norma was always telling her brother to give Dorothy a call. Edith was telling her sister Dorothy, “You have got to meet Al.” Al went to University of Illinois to visit some friends; he promised Norma he would call Dorothy. Al did not waste time, he called her up and hedged his bet. He told her he had five male friends with him. That sealed the deal, Dorothy’s girlfriends were ecstatic. Al and his friends waited on the porch in the pouring rain, as Dorothy went back to report to her girlfriends. After some window peeking, Al and his buddies were granted approval and they all went out to see a musical. Now at the time, Dorothy was seeing a young man in the service who wanted to be a doctor. However Al, being ever charming, wrote letters and visited Dorothy every chance he got. Humbly, Al said the more Dorothy saw him, the more she loved him. Later “their” song was The More I See You. Al bought the record for Dorothy. Yet, Dorothy knew Al was the man for her when they were riding the streetcar and she was holding onto the pole and Al covered her hand with his. They married on June 15th, 1947. Al graduated school in January 1947, he had studied engineering. He and Dorothy settled into married life and soon Susan was born, followed by Ellen and then their son Steve. Al recalls, with the first baby he and Dorothy were equally happy and scared. By the 2nd baby, they were much more confident and happy. Then his son Steve arrived, just like the family pattern. Al’s favorite memories are many family birthday festivities and holiday celebrations. But he said the tough times were also memorable and there was no one better to go through the tough times with than his wife Dorothy. (Continued on pg. 6)

Al & Dorothy’s song, record anddance card memorabilia!

Dear Friends,Al Boime is celebrating his 90th

birthday on April 8th. He wasborn in Chicago, on the West side.He was the youngest with twoolder sisters, Norma and Bernice;who doted on him. Interestingly,there were three generations of 2daughters, and then a son born inAl’s family. Bernice, known asNiecie, had a dear friend namedEdith. Edith had a younger sisterDorothy. Norma was alwaystelling her brother to give Dorothya call. Edith was telling her sisterDorothy, “You have got tomeet Al.”

went on two outings to Walgreensto spend gift cards that were wonduring the Valentine’s Bingo eventin February. We took two groupsto the store to look around andfind what they would like tospend their gift cards on. Wethankfully had nice weather and agreat time together.

Neighborhood NewsThe Neighborhood continues

to attend a scenic driveopportunity on Sunday morningsat 11am. We tour the localneighborhoods to observeinteresting sights depending onthe season. We do like to rotatethe group that attends, as the vancan accommodate only so manyfolks at a time. A PAL doesaccompany the group on the ridein addition to the driver.

March Employee of the MonthOur Pal Ana is our Employee of the Month. A

resident nominated her for her sweetness, smile,and attention she gave her when she was ill.Ana has been with us for 4 months and alreadymaking a positive impact! Other staff recognizeher can do attitude! Additionally, we wererolling out an incentive program with a $5.00reward. The residents were involved and when aresident gave Ana the gift card, she stated she isnot able to accept gifts. However, this is aBelmont approved program, so she did deservethe card. We appreciate her commitment.

Our MBA Trip DowntownOur MBA (Mind, Body, Awareness) group

ventured downtown and had a wonderful time.We went to the Chicago Symphony Orchestraand were swept away with the outstanding andhighly talented music. The Orchestra Hall wasbeautiful as well. We enjoyed a deliciousBelmont lunch on our trip home.

Our MBA group enjoys many therapeutic andeducational programs daily and are rewardedfor their involvement at our MBA monthlymeetings!

Cover Story Continued:Al recalled moving in January,

1956 to Lincolnwood, it wassnowing and all three childrenhad the chicken pox. Yet Dorothyalways kept her wits about her.

Al states he was the grill masterbut concedes Dorothy was a verygood cook; tasty stews and a greatpot roast. However, Al saysDorothy’s greatest achievementwas being a wonderful wife andmother. Al said it was a goodmarriage, because he and Dorothyhad similar backgrounds and theysaw eye to eye on raising thechildren and finances. Al andDorothy were all about family;Susan’s husband Stan and Ellen’shusband Ken, were like sons tothe happy couple. Al and Dorothyhave nine grandchildren and tengreat-grandchildren!

Al had business trips in NewYork; he would bring Dorothy andsee the sights. They enjoyed taking

trips in the fall. One memorabletrip was a tour of the Northwestvisiting Washington state and thento Alaska. They both enjoyedgoing to the movies and outto dinner.

In 1972, during one of Al’sbusiness trips he stopped in amusic store and bought the songlyrics to Mack Gordon’s The More ISee You. Years later they framedthe lyrics, original record, and adance card from 1945 when theyfirst danced to their song.-Maureen

A Win-Win CommunityService Project!

Our residents enjoyed makingan Easter craft, putting candies inplastic eggs, arranging the bunniesand other treats and finallywrapping up 25 Easter basketswith a bright ribbon. Ourresidents also enjoyed a fabulousand adorable show with hip hopand ballet dance numbers by thechildren who received our baskets.The children are from the PalatineOpportunity Center. Many of theirfamilies came to Belmont as welland were very touched by ourresidents’ acts of kindness!
