Al & Dorothy’s song, record anddance card memorabilia!
Dear Friends,Al Boime is celebrating his 90th
birthday on April 8th. He wasborn in Chicago, on the West side.He was the youngest with twoolder sisters, Norma and Bernice;who doted on him. Interestingly, there were three generations of 2daughters, and then a son born inAl’s family. Bernice, known asNiecie, had a dear friend namedEdith. Edith had a younger sisterDorothy. Norma was alwaystelling her brother to give Dorothya call. Edith was telling her sisterDorothy, “You have got tomeet Al.”
Al went to University of Illinoisto visit some friends; he promisedNorma he would call Dorothy. Aldid not waste time, he called herup and hedged his bet. He toldher he had five male friends withhim. That sealed the deal,Dorothy’s girlfriends were ecstatic.Al and his friends waited on theporch in the pouring rain, asDorothy went back to report toher girlfriends. After somewindow peeking, Al and hisbuddies were granted approvaland they all went out to see amusical. Now at the time,Dorothy was seeing a young manin the service who wanted to be adoctor. However Al, being evercharming, wrote letters and visitedDorothy every chance he got.
Humbly, Al said the moreDorothy saw him, the more sheloved him. Later “their” song wasThe More I See You. Al bought therecord for Dorothy. Yet, Dorothyknew Al was the man for herwhen they were riding thestreetcar and she was holdingonto the pole and Al covered herhand with his. They married onJune 15th, 1947.
Al graduated school in January1947, he had studied engineering. He and Dorothy settled intomarried life and soon Susan wasborn, followed by Ellen and thentheir son Steve. Al recalls, with thefirst baby he and Dorothy wereequally happy and scared. By the2nd baby, they were much moreconfident and happy. Then hisson Steve arrived, just like thefamily pattern. Al’s favoritememories are many familybirthday festivities and holidaycelebrations. But he said the toughtimes were also memorable andthere was no one better to gothrough the tough times with thanhis wife Dorothy. (Continued onpg. 6)
