• Relations with the United States were good until the 1970s.

• Then in 1978 a revolution began in Iran.

• Relations have been strained with our country ever since.

are Shia Muslims. • Shia Muslims believe that

true interpretation of Islamic teaching can only come from certain religious and political leaders.

• Iran is a theocracy: a government ruled by religious leaders

• Ayatollahs are the religious leaders.

• The supreme leader is head of the Ayatollahs and has unlimited power.

• In 2005 Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president.

• He wants Iranians to follow strict Islamic law.

• The United States and many other countries are worried about his nuclear ambitions.
