Bellwork: Draw the graph and answer the question
• The graph shows the rate of activity for the enzyme catalase at different temperatures. Catalase helps convert hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water. The rate of catalase activity is directly related to the percent increase in oxygen.
• Based on the graph, what conclusions can be made about the functioning of catalase?
Science Fact of the Day:An Octopus has three hearts.
CO: I will understand and explain the process and purpose of
transcription.
LO: I will write notes and will create a mind map about Transcription.
Transcription Preview
Let’s get some things straight…
• Replication- to make an exact copy–Replication is like making a photocopy
• Transcription- to transfer from one recording form to another–Transcription is like taking notes
(same information, different form)
Why bother making copies?
Well…1. Copies are good to have as a backup—it’d be
bad if something happened to DNA 2. You can just put down the part of the
information you need—shorter/simpler
Think of it like this:DNA = master copyRNA = blueprints…you don’t need the
blueprints for the whole house to build the foundation

Transcription (big ideas)
• Is the first step in making a protein (polypeptide)• Occurs in the nucleus• DNA is used to make RNA– RNA is then sent out into the cell to make proteins– It’s usually just a section of the DNA strand (gene)
that codes for one specific protein
There are three main differences between DNA and RNA:
1) The sugar in RNA is ribose instead of deoxyribose.
2) RNA is single-stranded.
3) RNA contains uracil instead of thymine.
Comparing base pairing rules

DNA to RNAC GG CT AA U
Summarize the DNA to RNA base pairing rules in exactly 8 words.
Messenger RNA (mRNA) carries copies of instructions from DNA in the nucleus
to the ribosome to make proteins.
Translation Recap
Transcription Model (teacher guide)
• I need a person for A T G T C A at the front of the room
• I need people to form a complementary DNA strand
• Who wants to be helicase?• Now I need people to form a complementary
RNA strand• DNA polymerase please stand up…
Practice Replication and Transcription
• We’re going to make a paper foldable to practice.
• You’ll have 7 minutes to replicate and transcribe DNA after we fold the paper
