BISD Moving to 9 week

grading periods At a recent BISD Board of

Trustees meeting, the board ap-

proved BISD moving from a six

week grading period to a nine

week grading period. This con-

cept has been discussed among

administrators and teachers for the

past two years. After much con-

sideration, administrators decided

to give it a try to determine if the

benefits outweigh any negative

ramifications. Administrators feel

strongly that students will benefit

academically once the transition is

made for the 2016-2017 school

year.

We are in an educational time

where students are, in our opinion,

tested entirely too much. When

we combine unit tests, end-of-

grading period assessments, se-

mester tests, and certainly stand-

ardized tests required by Legisla-

tion, countless hours are con-

sumed preparing for and adminis-

tering tests. As a result, too much

quality instructional time is lost.

As one teacher appropriately ex-

plained, “In Bells, we know very

well that steers gain weight by

eating consistently, not as a result

of the keeper weighing them con-

sistently.” A comparison can be

made with a child’s learn-

ing…..children learn from con-

sistent. quality instruction, not by

redundant testing to see what they

have learned. Moving to a 9

week grading period will reduce

time testing and increase instruc-

tional time. Rather than being

pressured to do assignments mere-

ly for grades in the gradebook,

teachers will have more time to

instruct and formatively assess

students along the way, gaining

quality information on student

levels of learning. With more

time in the grading period, teach-

ers will be able to go deeper when

teaching more complex concepts.

A nine week grading period will

also provide more time for teach-

ers to monitor and manage make-

up work, which as active as our

students are in extracurricular ac-

tivities, is very beneficial to stu-

dents in BISD. In addition, in-

creased time between grade re-

porting will allow teachers to ac-

cumulate more grades, thus, one

poor test grade will not have such

a major impact on the final nine

week grade. Ideally, there will be

more grades to average, and stu-

dents will have more time to bring

up unsatisfactory grades. Finally,

few schools in our area remain on

a six week grading period. When

students move between local dis-

tricts, it is more likely that the

transfer of grades will be con-

sistent with most other schools in

our area.

The major difference experi-

enced by parents will be the

change from receiving six report

cards to only four in a school year.

The traditional practice of receiv-

ing three week notices will now go

to four week notices; however,

teachers and principals are com-

mitted to communicating any time

a student’s grades fall below ex-

pectations. Teachers are required

to report each four weeks mini-

mum, but that is not a maximum.

Parents are still strongly encour-

aged to monitor their child’s

grades through the parent portal.

Speak to your child’s main office

if you need access to the grading

portal.

BISD staff wants to assure our

students are given the best oppor-

tunity to learn and be successful in

the classroom. We feel this will

change enhance teaching and

learning for all.

From the Superintendent Mr. Joe Moore

Congratulations to

senior

Bailey Wornhor for being named a

Bells High School FFA members have been

busy prepping their projects all year, and they have

now had the chance to exhibit them. Everybody

worked extremely hard this year with their projects.

Those who have been lucky enough to make the sale

with a market animal, breeding animal, or ag mech

project have reaped the rewards of their labor. The show season started off in Fort Worth.

Bells was represented by 11 heifers at the show, 4

steers, 2 rabbits and a hog. The highest placing heifers

were Cord Matchett 3rd , Britt Herrod 2nd, Cash Little

2nd, Laykin Little 3rd, and Ansley Campbell 3rd. Cara

Powers got 5th place with her steer that brought in

$9,500 at the auction. Zoe Bankston got 3rd and 6th

place with her Holland Lops. Brooklyn Ragan got

$2,500 in scholarships also. Next was San Antonio and San Angelo going

on at the same time. Bells exhibitors had 5 heifers, 2

hogs, and a lamb at San Antonio. The highest placing

heifers were Cash Little 1st, Laykin Little 3rd, Nicole

Burks 4th, and Cord Matchett 4th. Landon Morse had

the high placing hog, getting 2nd in its class and bring-

ing $2,000 at auction. Landri Hicks had the only

lamb, which placed 9th and brought $2,000. Bells was

represented by 2 gilts at San Angelo; both were re-

serve division champions exhibited by Kyla Mosely.

The pair brought $7,000 at auction. Loy Lake was right after San Antonio. Bells

had 30 hogs, 12 lambs, 9 steers, 11

heifers, and 2 breeding rabbits. The

highest placing hogs were Landon

Morse Champion Dark Cross, Kay-

cee Arnold Champion Duroc, Chris

Ciaccio Reserve Champion Duroc,

Chance Morse Reserve Champion

Hampshire. In addition, Cassidy

Scott, Desiree’ Davidson, and Jayci

Burns had class winners. Five other

hogs made the sale, too. Several

FFA members showed steers at Loy

Lake. Ansley Campbell and Ben

Branam were class winners. Rylee

Hicks and Katie Branam had second

places steers, and 4 other steers sold.

The heifers made a dominate showing at this year’s

local show. Cord Matchett had the Grand Champion

O.R.B. Britt Herrod had the Reserve Champion Char-

olais and O.R.B, and Jaycee Little had the Grand

Champion Cross. Laykin Little had the Reserve

Champion Angus, and these FFA members placed as

well: Cara Powers 1st, Nicole Burks 2nd, Cash Little

2nd,and Brooklyn Ragan 3rd. Zoe Bankston had Grand

Champion Holland Lop. There were 5 ag mechanics

projects built. Each project got a blue ribbon, and

Matt Waldrip got 5th overall and made the sale. The last show of the year that we had mem-

bers participate in was Houston. There were 13 hogs,

7 lambs, 3 heifers, and 2 steers. There were 6 hogs

that made sale. Those students who exhibited the hogs

were Cassidy Jeffery, Chance Morse, Landon Morse,

Kyla Mosely, Cord Matchett, and Kaycee Arnold.

The Bells FFA hogs that were sold totaled $4,800 in

premium checks. There were 4 lambs sold. Those

lambs were exhibited by Miranda Whiting, Laykin

Little, Bailey Stowers, and Landry Hicks. The premi-

ums for the lambs totaled $4,000. Congratulations to all of those who competed

in the spring shows. Good luck to those who are on

judging teams and those competing in CDEs later this

spring.

PJH Junior Beta Club Takes State by Storm!

Members of the PJH Junior

Beta Club recently traveled to

Frisco for the annual state conven-

tion. Not only did students and

sponsors have a great time fellow-

shipping together, this group

demonstrated tremendous talent in

several events at the convention.

The group won first place in

two events in which they have

never competed: Living Litera-

ture and Songfest. Victoria

Azevedo got second place for her

recycled art entry.

PJH Beta members will attend

the national competition in New

Orleans this summer where they

will compete in the events listed

above. They are currently fund-

raising for their trip by working in

the concession stands at baseball

and softball games. They will al-

so work the district track meet

concessions. In addition to con-

cession stands, Beta members are

selling flowers and planning a

spring dance to raise money for

their trip.

Congratulations to all of the Jun-

This photograph was taken at 7:30 AM, on Saturday, April 9, 2016. What could have possibly brought 71

students to the BHS commons that early on a Saturday morning? The ACT test! BHS students had the opportunity to take part in a study conduct-

ed by ACT to determine if students taking the various parts of the

test- English, reading, math, and science- in a different order im-

pacts the validity of the results. This was a one-time only event in

which BHS sophomores and juniors were eligible to participate.

In order to qualify for the study, BHS had to have 80 students

register to take the ACT at BHS on April 9th. The test was admin-

istered online. Students who chose to participate were able to

take the ACT for half the usual price of testing.

Through the determination of Mr. Weger and Mrs. Ivers, BHS

did meet the goal of 80 registrations! Due to various circum-

stances, several students were not able to come on that Saturday

after registering, but 71 students did show up for testing. They

arrived on time and did a great job. Special thanks to Ross Chla-

pecka and Sherry Stowe for serving as technical coordinators,

and to Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Emory, Mrs. Melvin, Mrs. Pam Neal,

and Mrs. Sewell for serving as our room proctors/test administra-

tors. Also, thank you to Mrs. Patricia Neal for providing school

photo ID’s to students who did not have one.

time/anywhere. All they need is a technology device

and internet access. The ACT tests course content rather than analyti-

cal ability like the SAT test. Taking a prep course or

at least spending some time in a preparation manual

can help a student raise his or her score. Part of do-

ing well on tests like the ACT has to do with familiar-

ity with the test format. It is helpful for students to

know what types of questions will be asked and what

types of answers the tester wants. Method Test Prep

is a tool purchased by BHS to help students not only

review content material, but also help them become

more familiar with the ACT format.

A Trip to Mars

Third graders from Ms. Kight's science classes recently

wrote scripts for Magic School Bus segments and then visited

the BES "recording studio" in Mrs. Stowe’s office where she

showed them how to use Movie Maker to create their complet-

ed short movie. The students added narration, music, a title

slide, and a credit slide to their movie before publishing it to

Google Drive.

STAAR Students Workshops

To better prepare students for their STAAR Tests, Mrs. Stubbs

will conduct three grade-level student assemblies. During that

time, a presentation will be given by Mrs. Stubbs to discuss test

tips and expectations for the testing environment.

Mrs. Stubbs recently presented a program to students and parents

on Cyber Safety. The presentation included data from Homeland

Security and covered topics such as bullying, sexting, and picture

sharing. In addition, students and parents were informed about

the laws and legal consequences of related offenses.

Helping Your Child with Math Listed below are some engaging ways to help reinforce

math skills to your children:

Take a math walk outside or around the neighbor-

hood. Work on counting, estimating, and geometry

skills.

Ask silly questions. For example, “What percentage

of the chocolate pie did our family eat tonight?”

Stress mental math. Use everyday experiences to

have students calculate reasonable answers in their

head.

Discuss different ways to get the right answer.

Play thinking games. (with cards or license plates)

Ask math questions while watching sports on televi-

sion or in real time. (Ask: What is the difference in

the score for Team A and Team B? or How many 3

point shots does LeBron James

have to make to score 15 points?)

Math skills are used every single day.

Your child will benefit by your creat-

ing a culture of reinforcing these

skills at home.
