What is propaganda?
This Day in History:September 14, 1812- Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grande Armée enters the city of
Moscow, only to find the population evacuated and the Russian army retreated again.
September 14, 1847- During the Mexican-American War, U.S. forces under General Winfield Scott enter Mexico City and raise the American flag over the Hall of Montezuma.
September 14, 1901- President William McKinley dies after being shot by a deranged anarchist during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York allowing Teddy Roosevelt to become president.
September 14, 1944- The U.S. 1st Marine Division lands on the island of Peleliu, one of the Palau Islands in the Pacific as a part of Operation Stalemate.

They had to keep a standing army in North America to protect the colonists from Indian attacks and to enforce the Proclamation of 1763.
In 1764 the British Parliament passed the Sugar Act which was the first tax in the colonies.
The British also began cracking down on smugglers.
Taxation without RepresentationThe colonists had no representatives in
Parliament so they felt Parliament had not right to tax them without their consent.
The slogan “No Taxation without Representation” was coined by James Otis and Samuel Adams.
Adams set up the Committees of Correspondence so that colonies could discuss their views on the new taxes. Colonists began boycotting British merchants.

The Townshend Acts of 1767 placed duties on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea.
The Sons and Daughters of Liberty were formed to oppose these acts.
