This Day in History:

January 26, 1945- The Soviet Army liberates the Auschwitz concentration camp.

January 26, 1863- General Joseph Hooker takes over the Army of the Potomac.

January 26, 1838- Tennessee passes the nation’s first Prohibition law.

January 26, 2005- George W. Bush appoints Condoleezza Rice to secretary of state, making her the highest ranking African American woman to serve in a presidential cabinet.

THE WAR OF 1812

Key events

Early on the U.S. launched an attack in to Canada, but they suffered several defeats early on.

Taking control of the Great Lakes would become important and the U.S. would eventually succeed in that under Oliver Hazard Perry.

The Americans win a key battle at the Thames River, Tecumseh is killed ending the Indian alliance.

Fall of Washington D.C.

In August of 1814 the British defeated a larger American force near the capitol.

The British set fire to the capitol and the White House.

While this was going on the Americans were able to hold off the British at Baltimore, during this battle Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner in response to the bombing of Fort McHenry.

War in the South

War erupted with Native Americans in the South, who were angry at settlers pushing into their lands.

Creeks attacked Fort Mims in Alabama, killing about 250 defenders.

Andrew Jackson, leading 2,000 volunteers, defeated the Creeks at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama in 1814.

The Treaty of Fort Jackson ended war in 1814 and forced the Creeks to give up millions of acres of their land.

The Battle of New Orleans

The British hoped to secure New Orleans to gain control of the Mississippi River.

Andrew Jackson went with a hodgepodge of militia to defend NO.

Jackson routed the British killing over 2,000 and losing only 70.

The Treaty of Ghent

Ultimately an armistice.

No side won or lost territory.

No mention was made of the things America fought for.

Consequences of the War

Feelings of patriotism among Americans.

Power of many Native American groups broken.

Lack of goods during blockade boosted American manufacturing.
