Reasons for TaxationThe French and Indian war had been very costly for

Great Britain and they had bills to pay.

They had to keep a standing army in North America to protect the colonists from Indian attacks.

In 1764 the British Parliament passed the Sugar Act which was the first tax in the colonies.

The British also began cracking down on smugglers.

Taxation without RepresentationThe colonists had no representatives in Parliament

so they felt Parliament had not right to tax them without their consent.

The slogan “No Taxation without Representation” was coined by James Otis and Samuel Adams.

Adams set up the Committees of Correspondence so that colonies could discuss their views on the new taxes. Colonists began boycotting British merchants.
