Americans/South Americans

Were the reasons for immigration the same as in previous years?

Important Legislation to Know Immigration Act of 1924

Established strict quotas on immigrants’ ethnicity. Hart Cellar Act of 1965

Abolished the strict quota system. Since 1965, over 28,000,000 million legal immigrants arrived

in the US. Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1982 (IRCA)

Made it illegal for businesses to hire illegal immigrants. Granted amnesty to illegal immigrants living in the US before

1982. Also provided illegal immigrants a means for the legalization

process. Illegal Immigration Act of 1996

Welfare benefits more difficult to receive for (all) immigrants. Authentication by US employers are more strict. Increased security at US borders.

Family History Group Work (15 pts) On your own (on the BR sheet) answer

these questions: When did your family move here? From where? Why did they leave? Why did they pick Chicago?

Then in groups of 4 or less: Share your answers in your group. Do you see some similarities/differences? If

so, what are they?
