• What comes to mind when you think of classical music?

• Maybe sophisticated, formal, complex, opera, symphonies

• Regardless of what you think of, you still associate classical music with a different kind of culture

• This makes it different from traditional and popular music

• Many different cultures have produced classical music throughout different historical periods.

• For example, Mexico is strong for its traditional music.

• Mariachi music has a strong tradition in Mexico but classical music also bloomed in Mexico

• Composers such as Manuel Maria Ponce (1882-1948) and Carlos Chavez (1899-1978) are recognized in Mexico as important to the classical music world.

• Many composers depended on patronage to survive.

• Patrons included kings, members of nobility, and sometimes wealthy church leaders.

• Composers were contract employees.• Examples of classical composers included

Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

The Emerging Middle Class

• As the classical period advanced, more people made more money.

• As the middle class advanced, they wanted to share the cultural entertainments of the elite class.

• These included music, theatre, and literature.• Some merchants enrolled their children in

music lessons.

Emerging Middle Class

• Sometimes composers wrote music specifically for amateur musicians.

• They used familiar folk and popular tunes as themes for their classical symphonies.

• Mozart and Haydn wrote dance music for public balls.

Chamber Music

• Chamber Music- music written during the classical period for small ensembles

• This music was not played for large concert halls, but in rooms or chambers.

• Most of these concerts took place in private homes for social gatherings and at parties.

• This music provided entertainment for nobility, clergy and the arising middle class.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart• 1756-1791• He was a child prodigy at 8 years

old.• He became famous for his

harpsichord skills when he was just 8 years old.

• He composed his first symphony at 8 and his first opera at age 11.

• Mozart wrote sacred works, piano works, orchestral works, vocal music, chamber music, concertos, and operas.

• Even though he was famous in his day, he died at age 35 in poverty.
