• Over the past 100 years or so, people have become more and more visually oriented.

• 1946 Broadcast television

• 1979 Microcomputer

• 1994 Internet

• Even without thinking about it, we take in enormous quantities of information through our eyes.

• Prior to television, radio dramas forced listeners to envision the characters and scenery

• Now, television dramas create settings, costumes, and characters for the eyes so the viewer does not have to invent them.

• EX- The difference between reading a novel—and– seeing it turned into a motion picture.

What does this do to the music?

• During the 20th century, increasing numbers of people moved into urban and suburban environments (cities).

• Many people living close together created a new type of lifestyle—life becomes intense, impersonal, complex, and varied as compared to simple lifestyles in rural (country) areas

• People have more choices, opinions, and interests

Music has become more URBAN…

• URBANIZATION- The development of a culture that is the result of the crowding intensity of a city lifestyle

• Vibrant, exciting, divisive (divides people and their ideas), and unruly

• Urbanization has thus created its own form of music

• Many new forms of music….music mixes together…we get even more forms of music…

• Worldwide communication has created the first means of humans being connected globally.

What are the three factors that have contributed to the evolution and change of music from the past, into what it is today?

Briefly describe one of them

Rock Music After WWII, southern African Americans

migrated to northern cities bringing a new musical influence to urban culture

This turned into the Rhythm and Blues music of B.B. King and other similar musicians

“Rock and Roll” fully emerged in 1955 with Bill Haley’s recording of “Rock Around the Clock”

During the 1960s, this early style of Rock and Roll became increasingly electrified and amplified.

Today, Rock music is very mainstreamed and some say that (today’s) rock in the 21st century sounds much as it has in previous decades.

Rap and Hip Hop Music Rap evolved from many different

music genres: Gospel, jazz, blues, salsa, electro

rock, pop, and Caribbean With that mixture, urban African

American youth invented their own music Originally, rap gave a voice to

disenfranchised youth Some rap lyrics have been seen as

obscene, bigoted, and socially irresponsible

This is not always true it has lyrics that address hard realities of life, and personal and social messages

Beginning of Rap

One early DJ, “Kool Herc,” came to America from Jamaica, where spinning records was a highly developed art.

Kool Herc often used to record players and two versions of the same record to “loop” short sections and create break beats.

Break beats occur when other instruments in the band stop playing while drums and bass play alone.

These break beats would loop one section over and over, would be played on two different turn tables

These extended break beats became very popular and eventually became the foundations of rhyming and “rapping.”

Rap and Hip Hop Music

Instruments- keyboards, drums and drum machines, synthesizers (to loop music), computers, turntables, vocals

Musicians- 50 cent, Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Drake, Eminem, etc…
