BELGARION (yellow cap) and the grey Herodotus renew rivalry in the Greyville 1900. (Wayne Marks).

Belgarion begins his march to Durban July MANY pundits believe Belgarion can provide trainer Justin Snaith with his fifth Vodacom Durban July triumph, but first the son of Dynasty must put Saturday’s WSB 1900 field to bed at Greyville, writes DAVID MOLLETT.

Snaith’s runner is the odds-on favourite for a race which includes 12 July entrants and he has two pluses — top jockey Anton Marcus in the saddle and his pole-position draw. Marcus, who has won five Julys, is unlikely to have settled on a ride with six weeks until the race and — with Do It Again due to shoulder a big weight — he may look elsewhere than 2019’s victor. Snaith told Turf Talk this morning: “Belgarion has not run in quite some time but he has a great draw with Anton Marcus up. On form he is going to take some beating and we are hoping for a great prep run for the Vodacom Durban July where he should carry 54kg. “His stable companion Crown Towers is ‘flying’ back

home and must be respected.” The opposition on Saturday does not include any horses that look like July winners, though Glen Kotzen has his team in good order and his runner Herodotus is second favourite at 13-2. Eyes Wide Open will have to rediscover his best form to trouble Belgarion and Duke Of Spin, Majestic Mozart and Camphoratus make more appeal for the runner-up berth. Swingers coupling Belgarion with Majestic Mozart might be one way to bet as trainer Candice Bass-Robinson's runner did finish third behind Snaith's charge at Kenilworth in January. Camphoratus is already a grade 1 winner (to p2)

BELGARION (fm p1) and her price of 18-1 will attract each-way interest as she could be a factor. A far more attractive betting race is the Lonsdale Cup in which Wealthy and Tap O’Noth are 7-2 joint fa-vourites. These stayers represent two of the strongest stables in the country — Dennis Drier and Vaughan Marshall. Sean Veale rides the big runners from Drier's stable and Wealthy should give supporters a good run for their money. However, this column is going to recommend each-way support of Silver Rose (11-2) — he is now seven years old but by no means a back number. Keagan De Melo has been booked for the ride.

Warren Kennedy — certain to be crowned champion jockey for the first time at the end of July — partners Marchingontogether for trainer Gavin van Zyl. Earlier in the meeting, Snaith and Marcus also team up in the sixth race — the East Coast Cup — with Miyabi Gold, who could be another success for this top combination. Miyabi Gold’s fifth in the Majorca Stakes at Kenilworth in February — beaten less than three lengths by Clouds Unfold — is the best form in the race and she can beat Perfect Air and Dynasty’s Blossom. Perfect Air and Escape Air are strong runners from the Drier stable, and Brett Crawford sends out his Gold Cup winner Dynasty's Blossom. Kennedy partners Railtrip for trainer Van Zyl and he will be hopeful of a top-four finish. - extracts from Business Day.

GG Gaming to sponsor Klawervlei Farm Sale race

KLAWERVLEI Stud announced today that they have gained a fantastic new sponsor for next year's Farm Sale race, with GG Gaming set to come on board in 2021. A R1000 buy in levy will apply for buyers, with the total stake (a minimum of R150 000) dependent of the number of "buy-ins". This is an exciting prospect for the future, and Klawervlei has welcomed GG Gaming to what has become a highlight on the Cape racing calendar. This year's Klawervlei Farm Sale officially starts at 18:00 Sunday, but online bidding is already open and interested buyers can access the bidding process at www.gavelhouse.com

From a half-sister to freshman star Captain Of All

THIS strong-looking lad is an unnamed Pomodoro colt and the first foal of Queen Of Throne, by Rebel King. The dam is a half-sister to champion freshman sire Captain Of All. He is from Riverton Stud (Lot 135), and the very last lot on Sunday’s Klawervlei Farm Sale. “He is worth waiting for,” said Duncan Barry of Riverton. “He is a very nice, compact colt and nothing fazes him. He will grow into a nice size too, will end up around 16 hands.” Sporting Post reported today: “Riverton Stud are consistently among the leading breeders in South Africa in terms of Average Earnings Per Runner and the vast number of black type horses bred from a relatively small number of mares (15), is a prime example of how a smaller farm may offer a buyer a bet-ter return.” View Lot 135 pedigree. Waller believes racing has reached a “lost generation”

AUSTRALIAN thoroughbred racing’s most dominant figure says he believes the sport he loves has won back the respect of the community through its united and responsible approach to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an exclusive interview with Racing.com, Australa-sia’s premier trainer Chris Waller said such has been racing’s response to the potentially crippling effects of the pandemic, he feels the at-times be-sieged industry has managed to reach “a lost gen-eration” and has shone during a most critical and anxious time for the country. “With there being no other sport and no other social events for people to look forward to, racing has stood tall and I for one am extremely proud,” Waller said. “It was getting free-to-air coverage during a massive world-wide problem and we have responsibly stayed within the guidelines with big carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne and gee, it’s come with a lot of respect.”

Waller said the reaction to racing’s continuation from people outside of racing’s bubble has surprised and heartened him.

“They are thinking ‘these people do know what they are doing, and they are putting on a re-sponsible show’ and I feel bloody proud,” he said. “There is so much more awareness of racing and people have often commented just how good it was to turn on the TV and to see the action and watch the stories unfold. “I got it from so many people outside of racing and outside of sport. I think it really has put racing back into the thoughts of a lost generation of people for the right reasons.” - tt.

Win R50,000 with four selections in Heversham Park’s “50 for 4” tipping competition

GAUTENG’s Heversham Park Stud Farm thought that in these exceptional times where everything has changed, it might be fun to launch a competition to test the predictive skills of South African race goers and punters; whilst at the same time raising some much needed funding for our beneficiary The Highveld Horse Care Unit.

HOW IT WORKS

OUR CV-19 RELIEF TO OWNERS

The art of social distancing

THE mighty stayer Stradivarius bagged his third successive Gr1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot yesterday and The Guardian reported: “On ground that had apparently turned against him after nearly 20mm of rain in 24 hours, Stradivarius cruised up to the leader, Nayef Road, with just over a furlong to run and powered clear in a few strides, stretching his lead all the way to the line. It was a magnificent and unforgettable piece of racing theatre, regardless of the fact that, uniquely, there was no audience in the grandstands to revel in it. When the race is replayed, as it will be, in 20 or 30 years’ time, few will recall that this was a winning favourite with no supporters to cheer him home. John Gosden, his trainer, had borrowed a line from Muhammad Ali a few hours earlier, as rain continued to fall at Ascot, suggesting that his horse’s normal “float-like-a-butterfly” approach would switch to “rope-a-dope” on the deteriorating ground. Instead, his sting was sharp and decisive!

This Trifecta paid a grand!

RUNNERS stabled by three lady trainers fought out the finish to Race 5 at Greyville on Wednesday. Alyson Wright (middle) won the race with Green Ice followed by Julie Guthrie (left) with Chatty Cathy and Wendy Whitehead in third with San's Dancer. The Trifecta returned a healthy 998 bucks.

The human-equine experience

ACADEMIC Marc Mullinax once wrote: “On that beach of our existence, we can see more evidence than just foot-prints of the divine-human encounter.” In Camps Bay, Cape Town, we can see evidence of the human-equine encounter, those sentiments which bring man and race-horse so close. There is a Malawian artist in operation here, building sand castles, and he’s built a sand horse in honour of Do It Again, whose many fans are awaiting his first run in KZN this season. Justin Snaith’s stable reported: “Do It Again put in a great grass gallop at Summerveld this morn-ing. He’s looking fantastic and has put on condition that he lacked in the Cape Season. The Gold Challenge (28 June) will be his first run in quite some time and just part of his prep for the Durban July. We’ll be looking for a respectable effort from him to show us that he is back in form.”
