Tuberculosis is not only curable but is preventable as well. The prevention lies largely in right living, in building up a strong bodli
resistance. Eight out Of ten persons are infected at some time in their lives,
according to figures of the National Tuberculosis Association, the lendingagency in the United States in the fight upon this disease. This organizationis sponsor for the annual Red Cross Christmas Seal sale, from which thefunds to carry on the work throughout the year are chiefly derived.

sale price of such meat on that day inKansas City, Omaha and Minneapolis. The carcass Included carrying chargesof about $6.00, cost him $60.11, or$6.25 less than he sold the animal forin Omaha.
What Cow Would Cost Consumer.
"Now," continues the Senator, "sup-
pose a consumer In Omaha had or-
dered this meat direct from me. and Ihad slaughtered the beef at the ranchand sent the meat direct to the con-
sumer. Taking as a basis tlv pricereceived for this cow in Omaha, 66.36,less the freight of 17 cents per hun-
dred, it would make the cow worth oathe ranch $65.00."
To this $65.00 he adds $3.00 forslaughtering at home and $6.00 for ex-
press from Thedford to Omaha, andhe deducts $7.00 credit for the hide.
According to these figures thedressed carcass of his cow would beworth $67.00 In Omaha, as against the
packers' price of approximately $04.00
(which is derived by deducting the ex
press charges to Thedford, $6.00, fromthe price the carcass was sold to him,$60.11).
Cheaper to Buy Than Kill.
"After thorough investigation," theSenator says, "I am convinced "thatIt does not pay for us to slaughterour own meat at the ranch; that wewould better ship our cattle toOmaha, and buy our beef from the
packer. I have been engaged In thecattle producing business all my life;there is no particular reason why Ishould be friendly to the packers, butI nm thoroughly convinced I am re-
ceiving, and always have receivedmore for my cattle on foot, than If Ihad been able to sell direct to the con-
sumer, and consequently the consumerhas been able to buy my product forless money through the packer thanunder any other system which isknown to business up to the presenttime." .

Senator Cume, StOCk Raiser Of

Mont is high; the packers admit it,though they say that other foods arehigher In proportion. The farmer sayshp is not getting too much for his cat-
tle, in fact not enough, he says. Howabout numerous local slaughteringplants scattered throughout the com-
munities of our country, or a morerelation-
ship? There is almost a sentimental attrac-
tiveness about the thought, like dreamsof one's boyhood home. It looks so
simple. Indeed, it is simple after afashion, and is the way most meatwas handled b afore the industry grewto national and international propor-tions. But would it pay?
Tried to Build Up Local Market.
Experimentation and testing isdoubtless the best teacher. And in-
quiring minds have not hesitated to
dig into the matter. Senator F. M.
Currie of Broken Bow, Neb., himselfa stock raiser, relates a bit of expe-rience of his own along this Hue.
He tried for years, he tells tjs, toestablish a market for fat cattle withlocal butchers, Invariably finding thathe could not meet the price made tothem by the packers.
"In other words," he says, "the pack-ers could pay us more for our cattleon foot, and sell the product to ourlocal butchers for less money thanthey (the butchers) could pay us forour cattle and slaughter the beef them-selves."
During the fore part of the presentyear he carried his Inquiry further. Heshipped two carloads of cows toOmaha, and they were sold to Armourand Company for $7.90 per hundred-weight. Among these was one cowwhich he wished to have himself forbeef.. Th's cow weighed S40 pounds
