Power ConnectorThe V940s power jack uses a telephone-type connector. This 4-conductorconnector only works with the includedpower cord, optional direct-wire, orSmartPlug cord.
For more information or to order, callus toll-free at 1-800-341-2288.
Signal StrengthMeterYour V940s alphanumeric display consistsof 280 individual LEDs, to provide anintuitive ultra-bright display of signalstrength and text messages.
The V940s standard bar-graph signalstrength meter only displays information onasingle radar signal. If there are multiplesignals present, the V940s internalcomputer determines which is the mostimportant threat to show on the bar-graphmeter.
When your V940 detects radar, itdisplays the band (X, K, or Ka), and aprecise bar-graph of the signal strength.
When your V940 detects a laser signal, thedisplay will show LASER.NOTE: If you are operating the V940 in
the Dark mode, the display will not lightwhen a signal is detected, only the audiowill be heard.
AudibleAlerts
For Radar signals:Your V940 uses a Geiger-counter-like
sound to indicate the signal strength andtype of radar signal being encountered.
When you encounter radar, a distinctaudible alert will sound and occur faster asthe signal gets stronger. This allows you to
judge the distance from the signal sourcewithout taking your eyes from the road.
Each band has a distinct tone for easyidentification.
X-band =chirpingK-band =buzzingKa-band =double-chirpPOP =full double-chirp
For Laser a nd POP signals:Since laser and POP signals (if turned
on) are a possible threat no matter howweak, the V940 alerts you to these bands atfull strength.
For Safety signals:Your V940 will alert you to these
signals with a double-beep tone, and acorresponding text message. A completelisting of the text messages is on page 21.

InterpretingAlertsAlthough the V940 has a comprehensivewarning system and this handbook is ascomplete as we can make it, onlyexperience will teach you what to expectfrom your V940 and how to interpret whatit tells you. The specific type of radar being
used, the type of transmission (continuousor instant-on) and the location of the radarsource affect the radar alerts you receive.
The following examples will give youan introduction to understanding the yourV940s warning system for radar, laser andsafety alerts.
Explanation
You are approaching a continuous radarsource aimed in your direction.
An instant-on radar source is being used aheadof you and out of your view.
An instant-on radar source or laser source isbeing used nearby. This kind of alert requiresimmediate attention!
Laser is being used in the area. Because laser isinherently difficult to detect, any laser alert
may indicate a source very close by.
Amoving patrol car with continuous radar isovertaking you from behind. Because thesesignals are reflected (reflections are increasedby large objects), they may or may noteventually melt into a solid point even whenthe patrol car is directly behind you.
Alert
The V940 begins to sound slowly, then therate of alert increases. The Signal Meter rampsaccordingly.
The V940 emits short alerts for a few secondsand then falls silent only to briefly alert and fallsilent again.
The V940 suddenly sounds a continuous tonefor the appropriate band received. Allsegments in the Signal Strength Meter are lit.
A brief laser alert.
The V940 receives weak signals. These signalsmay be a little stronger as you pass large, road-side objects. The signals increase in frequency.
Alert
The V940 alerts slowly for a while and tabruptly jumps to a strong alert.
The V940 alerts intermittently. Rate andstrength of alerts may be inconsistent orwildly.
The V940 alerts intermittently. Rate andstrength of signal increases with each al

How Radar WorksTraffic radar, which consists of microwaves, travels in straight lines and is easily reflectedbyobjects such as cars, trucks, evenguardrails and overpasses. Radar works bydirecting its microwave beam down theroad. As your vehicle travels into range, themicrowave beam bounces off your car, andthe radar antenna looks for the reflections.Using the Doppler Principle, the radar
equipment then calculates your speed bycomparing the frequency of the reflectionof your car to the original frequency of thebeam sent out.
Traffic radar has limitations, the mostsignificant of these being that it typically canmonitor only one target at a time. If there ismore than one vehicle within range, it is upto the radar operator to decide which targetis producing the strongest reflection. Sincethe strength of the reflection is affected byboth the size of the vehicle and itsproximity to the antenna, it is difficult forthe radar operator to determine if the signal
is from a sports car nearby or a semi-truckseveral hundred feet away.
Radar range also depends on the powerof the radar equipment itself. The strengthof the radar units beam diminishes withdistance. The farther the radar has to travel, the less energy it has for speed detection.
Because intrusion alarms and motionsensors often operate on the samefrequency as radar, your V940 willoccasionally receive non-police radarsignals. Since these transmitters are usually
contained inside of a building, or aimedtoward the ground, they will generallyproduce much weaker readings than will atrue radar encounter. As you becomefamiliar with the sources of these pseudoalarms in your daily driving, they will serveas confirmation that your V940s radardetection abilities are fully operational.
How POP WorksPOP mode is a relatively new feature forradar gun manufacturers. It works bytransmitting an extremely short burst, within the allocated band, to identify
speeding vehicles in traffic. Once the targetis identified, or POPPED, the gun is thenturned to its normal operating mode toprovide a vehicle tracking history, (requiredby law).
How Laser (Lidar) WorksLaser speed detection is actually LIDA(Light Detection and Ranging). LIDARproject a beam of invisible infrared lig
The signal is a series of very short infrlight energy pulses, which move, in astraight line, reflecting off your car anreturning to the gun. LIDAR uses thespulses to measure the distance to a veSpeed is then calculated by measuring
quickly these pulses are reflected giveknown speed of light.
LIDAR (or laser) is a newer technand is not as widespread as conventioradar, therefore, you may not encountlaser on a daily basis. And unlike radardetection, laser detection is not pronefalse alarms. Because LIDAR transmitsmuch narrower beam than does radamuch more accurate in its ability to diguish between targets and is also mordifficult to detect.AS A RESULT, EVETHE BRIEFEST LASER ALERT SHOUBE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

How Safety Radar WorksSafety Warning System, or SWS, uses amodified K-band radar signal. The SWS safetyradar system has 64 possible messages (60currently allocated). The SWS messagesyour V940 can display are listed on thefacing page.
From the factory, your V940 isprogrammed with SWS decoding OFF. IfSWS is used in your area, your V940 will
display the safety messages associated withthe signal. If you wish to detect this system, use the Programming feature to turn theV940s SWS decoding ON.
NOTE: Some of the safety messageshave been condensed, so that each messagecan be displayed on one or two screens onthe V940s eight-character display.
Since Safety radar technology isrelatively new, and the number oftransmitters in operation is not yet wide-spread, you will not receive Safety signalson a daily basis. Do not be surprised if youencounter emergency vehicles, roadhazards and railroad crossings that areunequipped with these transmitters. AsSafety transmitters become more prevalent(the number of operating transmitters is
growing every day), these Safety radarsignals will become more common.

The V940 does not seem sensitiveto radar or laser.
The V940 did not alert when apolice car was in view.
The V940 did not provide a Safetysignal while within range of anemergency vehicle.
The V940s display is not working.
The V940s audible alerts are lessloud after the first few alerts.
The V940 bounces or sags on wind-shield.
The V940s power-on sequencereoccurs while you are driving.
Solution
An X or K-band motion sensor or intrusion alarm is locatedwithin range of your route. With time, you will learnpredictable patterns of these signals.
Make sure that windshield wipers do not block your V940sradar antenna and that the laser lens is not behind tinted areas.Determine if your vehicle has an Instaclear, ElectriClearorsolar reflective windshield which may deflect radar or laser
signals.Your V940 may be in City Mode.
VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder) astopwatch method of speed detection, may be in use.Officer may not have radar or laser unit turned on.
Safety transmitters may not be commonly used in your area.
