What is a BEL Alumni Ambassador? Alumni, with their experience and enthusiasm for UQ and the BEL Faculty, are uniquely placed to share their knowledge and to be some of UQ’s most important ambassadors throughout the world.

Individuals appointed to the Alumni Ambassador Councils provide significant leadership and support to the University and its alumni community. Ambassadors make contributions by developing programs, services and benefits for all graduates, by lending their name and support to emphasise the reputation of the University and Faculty, and by contributing their time, talent and treasure.

BEL Alumni Ambassadors are appointed to an exclusive community of approximately 70 alumni from the Schools of Business, Economics and Law. They are selected to represent the interests of over 60,000 alumni across the world to build strong connections between alumni and to advance the mission of the BEL Faculty and UQ.

As the global education and jobs market for new graduates both become more competitive, it is vital for the University and alumni to cultivate a well-connected alumni network.

BEL Alumni Ambassadors work with the BEL Faculty at a strategic level through the Advancement team and are responsible for leading the charge in driving alumni and industry support for BEL and its students. In turn, we have developed an engagement program which provides authentic value to alumni, helping them to succeed both personally and professionally.

We genuinely appreciate volunteer participation in this program, and endeavour to make the experience as rewarding for those involved as it is valuable to the BEL Faculty.

Volunteer Responsibilities and Expectations BEL Alumni Ambassadors are expected to meet the following basic requirements of membership:

• active annual service to the BEL Faculty through the Alumni Ambassador Council including, but not limited to, activities outlined in Alumni Ambassador Programs (see following page)

• attendance (in person or via teleconferencing) at a minimum of two Alumni Council meetings each year• consideration of an annual participation gift in support of the BEL Faculty. A goal for BEL Alumni

Ambassador Councils is 100% philanthropic participation.

Time Commitment

Ambassadors dedicate an average of two - three hours per month, as follows:

• attend a minimum of two meetings per year• attend a minimum of 50% of alumni events held in your location• respond to Council-related communication in a timely fashion• attend the annual BEL Leadership Conference for Ambassadors and Volunteers when held in your

regional area• actively support BEL advancement objectives of achievement, engagement and financial sustainability, e.g.

nominate an alumnus for an award, promote events to UQ networks, review communications before they are sent to entire alumni body.

Chairs and Deputy Chairs of Alumni Ambassador Councils are expected to take part in and contribute to the development of succession plans for their respective group. In order to maintain a running list of prospective members, Ambassadors are encouraged to identify alumni for consideration so that places can be filled in a timely manner when vacancies arise.

BEL ADVANCEMENT ALUMNI AMBASSADORS

Alumni Ambassador Programs

Below are some examples of programs initiated and/or supported by BEL Alumni Ambassadors. The list is by no means exhaustive, but aims to represent some of the more common activities in which Ambassadors are involved:

• alumni events – e.g. identifying speakers for alumni lectures and facilitating requests; identifying arts and sports events where Ambassadors could host a group of alumni

• The [Global] Connection series – e.g. acting as a host at these quarterly informal drinks meet-ups for alumni; assisting in promotion of the event among peers

• prospective and current student engagement – e.g. giving formal or informal presentations to prospective students and parents; making contact with prospective student and their parents to answer questions or concerns they may have about studying at UQ and living in Brisbane; participating in one of the Student Employability programs for current students

• testimonials, quotes and interviews – e.g. providing testimonials for publications such as prospectus guides, annual reports and the UQ/BEL website

• fundraising and development – e.g. contributing financially to BEL fundraising efforts through an individual gift or an Alumni Council prize; facilitating introductions between prospective major donors and the BEL Faculty; assisting in the sourcing of corporate sponsorship

• alumni recognition and awards – e.g. identifying individuals who deserve acknowledgement from the University and peers/colleagues; assisting with the short-listing and nomination of BEL alumni to the annual UQ Alumni Awards.

Institutional Support – BEL Faculty Advancement

Working with the Alumni Ambassadors is a team of professionals who comprise the BEL Faculty Advancement team.

The BEL Advancement team facilitates a comprehensive alumni engagement program allowing alumni to share their talents for the benefit of students and academics, as well as to realise personal and professional objectives.

The team manages alumni relations (events, programming, communications), annual giving, fundraising (including The Dean’s Society and major gifts), corporate sponsorship and philanthropy, donor relations (research, outreach, stewardship) and certain prizes and scholarships (initiation of new prizes and scholarships, advertising and recruitment, donor stewardship, financial reporting).

Australian Institute for Business and Economics (AIBE) AIBE can link you with UQ’s researchers to deliver consultancies and collaborative projects. The institute delivers

high-quality research to governments and the private sector for the betterment of civil society, in areas including:

• applied economics, behavioural economics and economic modelling

• finance and regulation

• strategic management

• human resources and industrial relations

• commercial law

• inter-disciplinary studies in business, economics and law

• business of health

Centre for the Business and Economics of Health (CBEH) From 2016 our Faculty will house a new research centre focused on one of Australia’s most pressing problems –

providing quality, affordable and sustainable healthcare.

UQ’s CBEH, the first joint initiative between the faculties of HABS, BEL and the Mater hospital, will bring together

UQ researchers from business, economics and health to conduct vital research into cost-effective healthcare

solutions.

The centre will also provide innovative leadership and management courses specific to the health sector building

on the pioneering medical leadership program already offered within BEL.
