Beitou's famed sulfurous waters are hot as hell.

Welcome to Taipei Citys own volcanic hot springs right at the base of YangmingMountain. You can smell the sulfur even before you get offthe MRT at Xinbeitou.

Start the day with photo ops at Hell Valley, the source of many of the local hot

springs. You will find its name fitting as you peer into a bubbling blue swamp while

being engulfed by steam. Water temperatures can reach boiling point here.

In the main park area just in front of the MRT station, there is the original Japanese-

era hot spring building, as well as theBeitou Public Library,a triangular architectural

statement inspired by the bungalows constructed during the Japanese occupation.

Follow Hot Springs Road up past the park to findPuji Temple,a cute little wooden

temple built by Japanese rail workers.

Tired from all that walking? Its time to treat yourself to a soak and the parks

atmospheric outdoor public springs are your best and cheapest bet.

For a more luxurious bathing experience, try the public springs in theBroadway

Hoteljust beside the park, or spend the night in one of their traditional Japanese-

style rooms, complete with your own private tub.

SweetMe Hot Spring Resortis another good option with similar facilities, just next to

the MRT station. If you want privacy on a t ighter budget, all of Beitous hotels provide

comfortable rooms with private tubs that can be rented for two hours.

Getting There:All of the sites in Beitou can be accessed on foot from Xinbeitou MRT

    station.

historical sites, and lush green environment, Beitou was named one of the top 10 small

tourist towns by the Taiwanese Tourism Bureau in 2012.

The name Beitou originates from the Ketagalan aborigine word for thearea, Kipatauw(home of witches), as many of the local rivers and ponds emit an eerie

steam due to geothermal warming of the hot springs. During the Japanese colonial era(1895-1945), the area was developed into a hot springs resort. In the early days, Beitouwas a renowned red light district where men would go to soak in the hot springs and laterfeast on delicious cuisine while being entertained by beautiful young femaleperformers. The Taiwanese government began to clean up the area in the late 1980s,

and today it is one Taiwans major tourist attractions with numerous well preserved

architectural treasures dating back over 100 years as well as one of the highestconcentrations of hot springs in the world.

After visiting the culture center, continue up the road and on your right hand side, you willcome across an old western style building constructed by the Japanese in1913. TheBeitou Hot Spring Museum (, MAP#8)was the main public

bath in the area during the Japanese Era. This historic building was restored and re-opened in 1998 and allows visitors a view into the former lifestyles of the Japanese, something that can rarely be experienced even in Japan. Visitors are asked to removetheir shoes before entering (Japanese custom) and change into slippers that areprovided by the museum. Stroll through the buildings 12 rooms, including 1 tatami matperformance area, and the original public bath in the basement. The building is lit up atnight, providing more great photo opportunities.

The hot spring museum is as the name suggests, a museum, so there are noopportunities to bathe here. However, if you find yourself itching to take the clothes offand experience hot spring culture, theBeitou Garden Spa (,

MAP#9)is just a little further up the road. The Millennium Hot Springs is the modern daypublic bath scenically located outdoors next to a river and amongst the green trees. This

is a mixed bathing bath and requires use of bathing suits, so you wont be getting

completely naked like in Japanese style baths. Price of admission is a bargain at NT$40,NT$20 if you present a valid student ID. You may either bring your own swimwear orpurchase a swimsuit at the entrance.

Once you are warm and relaxed, by walking a little further down the road you will arriveat the modern and environmentally friendlyTaipei Public Library Beitou Branch

, MAP#15). After opening in 2006, the Beitou Library became

Taiwans first green library by receiving Green Building certification. Part of the roof is

covered with solar panels capable of generating up to 16KW of power. Rainwatercollected by the librarys sloping roof is recycled and used to water the librarys plantsand flush its toilets. Eco-friendly paint was used to reduce the amount of toxins releasedinto the environment. Energy is also conserved by using large French windows to

maximize the amount of natural light that enters the building, and by using a

perpendicular wood design on the balcony and plenty of trees to help shield the buildingfrom excessive amounts of thermal radiation. The 2007 architectural awarding winning

building is an amazing sight and the natural environment makes this a library that eventhe most unstudious of students would not want to leave. English books and newspaperscan be found amongst the large collection of Chinese materials.

Back near the entrance to Beitou Park, there are two transportation options for getting toour next location.
