If there is one word, which evokes a sense of apprehension it is “stewardship.” For most people, it is analogous with strangers calling and asking for money or feeling burdened by random organizations pleading for financial support. Perhaps, the word stewardship comes across as impersonal, cold, and offensive at times - at least this has been my experience in the past. I still have f lashbacks of receiving cold calls from random people trying to make me feel bad for not donating to their organization.

This is not stewardship! In the church, stewardship is about a relationship with God, others, and giving back to the kingdom. It is about sacrifice. It is about mission. It is about love. This is love—it is not that we loved God but that he loved us and gave his Son as the sacrifice that deals with our sins (1 John 4:10). Through love, God gave us Jesus so that we would find new life, hope, and fulfillment on earth. Love changes us from the inside and beckons us to proclaim and share, with the world, a gracious gift that is free for all.

By being good stewards to the church, you create opportunities to share the good news of Jesus as well as help the church continue its mission by being Christ’s hands and feet. In addition, every dollar helps support the mission that you

believe in as well—worship, grow, and serve. Trinity lives into this so well!

Continually, I hear from congregants that Trinity’s worship is meaningful and spiritually uplifting. One congregant said, “I have never been in church that does worship like Trinity.” We are a growing church. This month, we have close to 40 people who are interested in joining!

Trinity received the following gifts fromAugust 23 - September 13, 2016:

    Gifts to Trinity

Rev. Dr. Wayne D. WiattSenior Pastor

In memory of Bill Levy from Mr. and Mrs. Kelley Phillips, Mart Hill.

In memory of Mary Leslie Olson from Richard & Trish Spore, Betty Kirby, Anne Williamson Vinson, Mrs. J. Robert Sweat, Jr., Sarah Shaw, Benson & Betty Ann Skelton, Bettie Bedell, Oberley Brown, Nancy Simpson, Richard & Elizabeth Swaim, Mart Hill, Stephen & Julia Maroda, Pettit Family Community Fund, Betty Shiell and Family, Earle & Virginia Perkins, Amy Leicht Seamans and Family.

In memory of Diane Croft from Duane & Amy Clark,

In memory of Betty Jane Ebel from Duane & Amy Clark,

In memory of John Williams from Vereen Smith,

In memory of Lucille Webb from Bill & Cynthia Smith

When I think back on childhood memories, in addition to my sister’s horse named Wendy, a girl with a dissected frog at the fourth grade science fair, and our dog Cindy, I could have had a number of First Loves… It’s amazing what makes an impression on you during childhood! Yet my warmest thoughts surround my memories of Cherry Lake United Methodist Church, 8 miles north of Madison Florida, which was my “Church in the Wildwood” as a child.

The old Cokesbury Hymn states it this way:

O Come to the Church in the wildwood, O Come to the Church in the dale;No spot is so dear to my childhood, as the little brown church in the vale.O, come, come, come, come…

A l t h o u g h C h e r r y L a k e U n i te d Methodist had white siding rather than brown, outhouses in lieu of indoor bathrooms, and iced tea served out of sparkling new aluminum garbage cans; it was my spiritual home - the church where I first remember hearing how much God Loves me, and that the reason we are able to love others is because God First Loved Us! (1 John 4:7-10).

That Fi rst Love of church has memories that really never fade for me. A Thanksgiving Altar filled with the fall harvest and aromas of sugar cane, pumpkins, corn stalks, hay, and scores of garden vegetables. Mr. Peel, the church patriarch in his straw hat, suspenders, and bow tie. Miss Rena who was a second mother to me with memories of “driving” her Ford Comet while sitting in her lap and lazy summer afternoons swimming in Cherry Lake and picking blackberries on the way home. Church was my extended family of patriarchs and matriarchs who truly represented Christ to me as those who always had an outstretched arm, a warm embrace, and the embodiment of what it truly means to be the Church as we “Love One Another.”

As Trinity moves into a season of generosity and giving, the Co-Chairs of our First Love Stewardship Team, Anna Drake and Sam Rogers, Sr., have called us to remember the history of Trinity, founded in 1824, and our continued commitment to WORSHIP, GROW, and SERVE together into the future! For the

historians among us, that represents 193 years of ministry and mission on the corner of Park and Duval Streets in downtown Tallahassee.

During the month of October, we will share the many ways we are living into our vision for the future and invite some of our Trinity Leaders to share their testimonies of Love for Christ and His Church. On October 30th, we’ll set up in front of the church on Duval, order up some BBQ, share our best side dishes and desserts, and enjoy an old fashioned celebration. Shari Hubbard (Food and Fixings) and Elaine Freni (Games and Fun) are co-chairing what we are calling our First Love Fest Celebration! We will have volunteer sign-up sheets on the website, in Sunday School classes, small group gatherings, the Welcome Center, and Church Office. We will need help in setting up tables and chairs, preparing and serving the side dishes, supervising games, and general clean up afterwards.

O ur Commitment Sunday and Celebration Worship will be October 30 with one Combined Worship Service at 10 a.m., featuring a variety of special music and testimonies along the way! Following World Communion Sunday on October 2, our Sermon Series for October 9, 16, 23, and 30 will be titled appropriately, “First Love,” based on 1 John and 1 Corinthians.

I am excited to enter with you into this season of generosity and love for Christ and his Church. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for Trinity as we make our commitments to Worship, Grow, and Serve together!

    Using our Methodist Hymnal

Last month, our hymnal Metrical Index was explained in some detail. Here are some other interesting tidbits about the hymnal we use every Sunday in the 8:30 am and 11:00 a.m. services.

The listing on the bottom left of each hymn is east to understand: Who wrote the words and who wrote the music. By looking at the dates, one realizes some hymn sources are several hundred years old and some are quite recent. So, the United Methodist hymnal includes several centuries of hymn texts and hymn tunes.

Many of our hymns have interesting stories behind them: Google “Amazing Grace” for instance, and you will find interesting information about John Newton the text writer for this beloved hymn. What an amazing life he had, and how impressively he turned from sin to salvation. A number of books have also been created that provide background on many of our favorite hymns.

Children’s SabbathSomething different for our church

is the return of Children’s Sabbath, scheduled for Sunday morning services,

Oct. 9. Yes, children will participate in all three morning services, with a great breakfast planned for them following the 8:30 a.m. service! It is important for our children to understand how they can participate in worship services and even be music leaders! We encourage all families with children, two years old through 5th grade to participate. How? By joining our Wednesday afternoon NETkids Ministry for children, which includes two choirs, or by attending Sunday school where children are learning songs to sing at that service. Trinity’s Director of Children’s Ministries, Allison Corrigan, and the children’s music leadership team at Trinity are preparing for a wonderful Sunday. This is a great time to invite your friends who have younger children to attend our church services. We have many children here at Trinity; let’s celebrate together Sunday morning, October 9!

Music OutreachOur NETkids choirs travel into the

community for music programs three times each school year. They will be at Broadview Assisted Living on Wednesday, October 26 for a concert at 4:15 p.m. Each year, for this late-October event, the children dress in Halloween costumes….such fun!

The Cloud family has joined the pantheon of great Trinity musical families. Chris Cloud has graced Trinity‘s worship with his trombone solos and Jessica Cloud has led worship with her flute on several occasions.

You can close your eyes and imagine you’re in the beautiful Paris Opera House!

On Friday, October 21 at 7 p.m., a lot of fun for our dear congregation from some soloists of Chancel Choir - like Warren May, Gregory Hilliard, Alan Bowers, David LaJeunesse, Jana Sterling, and a great lyric coloratura soprano who is so loved by Trinity!

Just famous Opera Arias, duets and Ensembles like: G. Bizet “Carmen”, C. Gounod “Faust”, G. Donizetti “L’elisir d’amore”, G. Puccini “La Boheme”, G.Puccini “Tosca”, A. Sullivan, G. Puccini “Gianni Schicchi”, G. Verdi “Rigoletto”, G. Verdi “La Traviata”, G. Massenet “Le Cid” - the most famous operas in the whole world which you can listen this evening.

Characters like, Toreador, Gilda, Tosca, Lauretta, Musette, Valentin, Nemorino, Rodrigue, Violetta and Alfredo will sing for you just at Trinity at October 21 at 7 p.m.

Love duets, men’s ensemble...Love, suffering, jealousy, injustice, grief, tenderness ... you will be able to feel it all and to live in all of these emotions during concert.

Amazing symphonic music in arrangement for the organ in 4 hands and percussions will be introduced by Trinity’s organist with special guest from FSU organ department Margaret Mary Owens and by percussionists from FSU. You can enjoy Overture to the opera “Carmen” by G. Bizet, “ Dance Macabre “ by C. Saint-Saens and “Sabre Dance” by A. Khachaturian from the ballet “Gayane”.

    Come! Listen! Watch! and Enjoy!

Did you know that in 1981, Trinity was one of five downtown churches to help establish the ECHO ministry? The name ECHO was chosen with the idea that those who have received love and blessings from the Lord would, in turn, share or “ECHO” love and blessings with those in the community. ECHO programs focus on assisting people in crisis or poverty in their efforts to become independent, productive, and stable members of the community.

ECHO’s clients are served through four programs:

The Emergency Resources Program provides a broad array of basic necessities, supportive services, and referrals to provide an immediate first step to self-sufficiency.

The Furniture Bank provides gently-used furniture free of charge to those in need. This program partners with

peer human services agencies through a collaborative referral network. This is the only free source of furniture in Leon County. Furniture is provided to those experiencing fire, flood; transitioning to permanent housing; veterans rehousing; elderly or disabled; and many other situations.

The Family Resource Program provides safe, secure, temporary housing for homeless families with young children, and offers assistance to help them on a path to self-sufficiency.

The Rapid Rehousing Program addresses the needs of those coming out of homelessness to help cover expenses such as rental deposits, utility hookups, and moving costs.

ECHO is just one of the 14 local missions supported by the Trinity congregation. Through the Local Missions Committee, Trinity contributes financially to the support of ECHO’s programs. Additionally,

since July 2013, Trinity members have supported the Emergency Resources Program by contributing boxes of macaroni and cheese.

During this past summer, when ECHO donations are traditionally down and food is greatly needed, Trinity members gave 771 boxes of macaroni and cheese for inclusion in ECHO’s three-day bag of food.

How can we help?Continue bringing boxes of macaroni

and cheese to the Welcome Center.Personally consider donations of gently-

used furniture, houseware and small appliances to ECHO.

How to volunteer. ECHO is located at 1707 S. Gadsden St.

and can be contacted by calling 224-3246.And, just a word of thanks for your

generous support of the macaroni and cheese effort!

All young adults are invited for a potluck dinner on Tuesday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Susan and Alan Bowers.

Please plan to come, bring a dish to share, and get to know some of Trinity’s young adults. All are welcome. For details and to RSVP, please contact Susan ([email protected]).

    Helping OthersCommunity Garden – Shari

Hubbard ([email protected])Our communit y garden

beds this summer featured tomatoes, okra, eggplant and other vegetables, in addition to two beds devoted to fresh herbs including sage, parsley, basil and oregano. The herbs held up well all summer, and into the fall season.

After a long, hot summer, the Community Gardens Team met on September 24 to clean up the garden area, and to sow seeds for the fall crop of a variety of winter greens such as kale, spinach, collards, lettuce and more. Please keep your eye on these new crops as they begin to thrive, and be sure to watch your Sunday Bulletin for harvest updates. As a reminder, all are welcome to visit Trinity’s community garden, and enjoy the fresh vegetables and herbs. If you would like to volunteer to help, contact Shari Hubbard ([email protected]).

Hats for the Homeless – Judy Levy ([email protected]) This group creates hats and scarves that are given away at our annual Christmas dinner. Work proceeds at home all year. Our next meeting is in the Conference room on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m.

Third graders thank Wesley Bible Study Class for BiblesThanks to the generosity of the Wesley

Bible Study class, the third-graders pictured to the left (plus two who aren’t pictured), received their very own Bibles!

Trinity is blessed to have so many youngsters who are willing to stand up for their faith in front of the church and doubly blessed that a Sunday School class has been faithful in making sure that they have Bibles to continue their faith education.

Special thanks also to their adult sponsors, Gloria Colvin and Marsha Shalley.

During rehearsal, the children were told that they would be kneeling - some went ahead and prayed as they practiced.

Three important reasons to get out there and vote on November 8:

    1. Higher turnout makes our democracy more representative.

    2. Voting is a right generations of Americans struggled to win.

    3. Voting is your voice.

    Youth Happenings in October

A Note from Lisa ...We are back in the swing of things here

in the Underground! We’ve been going non-stop and we’re adding back in all our regularly scheduled school year activities now as well! At the end of August our seniors had a terrific time serving the returning FSU Wesley students a delicious barbecue dinner! We got to spend time talking with many friends from camp, etc. alongside a wonderful service opportunity. As a bonus, it gave our seniors a great sneak peek into what life looks like at Wesley!

    Rock the Universe!

In September, we took a group of 30 to Rock the Universe #RTU2016! We heard several different Christian bands, rode the roller coasters (some more than others) and had a GREAT time bonding through fellowship and fun time spent together.

Ministry Expo On September 18, we worked our

“youth booth” (photo below) during the Ministry Expo and shared a little more about all things youth with our church family. Lunch was delicious too! One of our new undertakings we were able to promote at the Expo is including our youth as acolytes during upcoming church services...so be on the lookout! We had a nice little turn out at our Acolyte Training--they are ready!

Finally, at the end of September, we shared a wonderful Mission Trip Potluck

Dinner where the kids got to share a meal AND some wonderful summertime mission trip memories with their friends and loved ones.

    Remember

Confirmation and Sunday School classes meet every Sunday morning at 9:45. The Underground doors open about 9:20 and we have snacks and fellowship (aka 9-Square) until we head up to worship in SUN service (9:45-10). At 10:00 we head back to the Underground where we break off into our Sunday school classes.

Wednesday afternoons bring Bible studies and church dinner back! Mid-high Bible study is from 4:30-5:30; dinner is 5:30-6:30; Senior-high Bible study is from 6:30-7:30.

And Sunday nights bring praise team and choir rehearsals plus UMYF from 6-8 every Sunday night!! We’d love to have you join us! If you have any questions about any of our goings on, please remember to check out the youth page @ tumct.org or contact Lisa at [email protected]

  • I am so proud of Trinity’s Sunday school children and their desire to help others. This school year, we decided that the children’s offering would go to the Madison Youth Ranch to provide necessities, gifts, and opportunities for the children there. We set an initial goal of $50 for the first quarter of the school year. The children of Trinity have blown that

goal out of the park! In just 3 weeks, the children have brought in over $125. The great news is that they are super excited to continue to give their money to the Ranch. Keep up the amazing work!

NETkids is off to a fantastic start. With the help of many amazing, dedicated volunteers we are able to offer an enriching, character-building, God-centered program

for children in grades K-5. In the first few weeks, we focused on friendships, serving and helping others, and k indness. The children have created beautiful sun catchers, personalized banners, and kindness crosses. They have tried their hands as train engineers as they practiced operating the electric trains here at Trinity. In the weeks to come, they will begin woodworking

projects and decorating the train set for Christmas. Do you have a child in grades K-5? If so, they, too, can be a part of NETkids. It’s not too late! Please contact Allison Corrigan at [email protected].

September was “Sausage September.” The children collected over 75 cans of vienna sausages and helped pack over 200 snack packs for our homeless population. This month will be “Orange & Oreo October.” Please send in the small pre-wrapped packages of Oreo cookies, and canned or fresh oranges. Let’s see how many we can collect!

October 9th, Children’s Sabbath, will be a very exciting day in the life of the church. The children of Trinity will be participating in all 3 worship services with acolytes, song, scripture, and art. Mark your calendars, because this is a special service you won’t want to miss!

For five years, members of Trinity UMC have been traveling to Guatemala to assist indigenous Mayans, many of whom lack the basic necessities of life. Malnourishment, disease and substandard housing are ever present problems that these people face on a daily basis. Our teams have assisted in providing sturdy cinder block homes for needy families, have addressed medical and dental needs for hundreds of sick people and have brought a smile to many a child’s face with a vacation Bible school.

Our teams have been blessed with a fantastic support system through members of Trinity. Without their ass istance, many of the goals of the team would not be met. Team members are required t o p a y t h e i r o w n expenses getting to and from Guatemala. It has been the construction and medical needs that have been met year after year with the generosity of Trinity’s congregation. For example, the construction of a rudimentary cinder block house with a bathroom, running water and electricity is approximately $5,500. As the medical team heads to the remote highland areas of Guatemala, the clinics cost $1,500 a day for two days and then $1,000 a day for clinics closer to our home

base of Panajachel. Prescription medicines, which must be purchased in Guatemala, can run anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500 a day.

So, you can see every penny counts. Our biggest means of raising funds has been our silent auction and luncheon. On Sunday, September 18, we had our fundraiser and with the support of our congregation, we were able to raise almost ½ of the funds to cover our expenses. The team is so appreciative of the support and we want to thank the congregation for their

help. But, we are not quite there yet. Team members will be in the Welcome Center in October selling s m o k e d m e a t s a s a fundraiser to help make up the difference. This year we have partnered with Johnston’s Meats in Monticello. They offer four amazing slow smoked

meats: Boston Butts, Picnic Hams, BBQ Ribs and Smoked Sausage. Each item costs $30 with a portion of that money going to mission funds. We will have the meats delivered to Trinity on Wednesday, October 26 and they will be available in the Welcome Center from 5:30–7 for those who pre-ordered. This will be the Wednesday before the Clemson football game and you can use the meats at your tailgate party.

Each item will be delivered hot, wrapped in aluminum foil and placed inside an aluminum container. Please see any team member or come to the Welcome Center before or after each service on Sunday to buy your smoked meat. The mission team cannot thank you enough for your support.
