As we consider what it might mean to live out our Christian faith in a counter-cultural way, we have to admit that there will be many natural temptations to shirk our responsibilities to be salt and light in that strange new environment. In my last article, I closed with the reassurance that, although this may be new territory for us, God is always there and always working His sovereign will. The testimony of Scripture shows that neither Pharaoh nor Nebuchadnezzar was the ultimate monarch in their kingdoms. This should strengthen and encourage us for the task at hand!

Knowing that we will fight these battles in His strength does not provide the strategy or tactics, though. It is on the daily level of moment-by-moment choices that we also must realize that the challenges have changed. Beginning in our next issue, I will mention just a few of those challenges. However, before charging forth, I would like to offer two cautions and one encouragement.

I Chronicles 12:32 describes the men of Issachar as “…men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do…” That is a trait to be coveted for every generation (and is the title of one of the textbooks for our senior Bible class). While certain specifics of an understanding of our time is essentially what I will try to describe this year, I think we need to be careful not to go too far in that regard. The world does not set the agenda for the church. The Gospel is timeless and universally applicable. Dr. Suggs, the newest member of the Decatur Heritage Board of Trustees, is an active surgeon with three daughters and a nephew who attend DHCA. Dr. Suggs has long taught medical students as an associate professor of surgery at the UAB Regional Campus, as well as served as the director of the Huntsville campus of the Alabama College of Medicine and the chairman of the State Council on Medical Education. He is an elder at Decatur Presbyterian Church and is married to Elena.

Decatur Heritage welcomes Mrs. Dena Blackwood. She is a registered nurse who will serve in the health room two days each week and at the front desk the other three. The majority of Mrs. Blackwood’s career was in outpatient surgery. She and her husband Marty have been married for ten years and have two sons, Tanner and Ty. Their family attends Westmeade Baptist Church.

Dr. Cyndi Lovelace has joined the Upper School Math Department. She earned a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering with a minor in mathematics/statistics and taught statistical and analytical courses at Calhoun and UAH for 20 years. For the past ten years, she homeschooled her children and taught all subjects for the Classical Conversations middle school program. She and her husband Tim have four children, Jake, Will, Ben, and Addison and attend Decatur Presbyterian Church.

Our band program will be under the direction of Mr. David Walker. He holds a bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education from the University of North Alabama. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in music education at Auburn University. During his twelve years at Master’s Hand Christian School, he taught concert band, jazz band, and guitar. He and his wife Kristy have two daughters, Faith and Grace, and are members of Calvary Assembly.

when a lawsuit is filed, either by an employee or family, over access and accommodation of non-Christian beliefs. Decatur Heritage certainly is not immune to that possibility. On the first day of school I charged our Upper School students to take a more immediate approach, one that they can embody right now, every day. Using Ephesians 4:1-3 and Philippians 2:3-4 as foundations, I urged them to live lives characterized by humility, patience, gentleness, and love. Never underestimate the power of a Christ-like life to effect change!

Finally, the good news is that, while this present culture may seem foreign to us who have never known otherwise, it has been a constant for many of our foreign and home missionaries laboring for the Lord in hostile environments. Much of Europe has been post-Christian for generations. Even in the United States, Christians have found themselves to be tiny minorities in cities and regions. Our approaches and assumptions can be modeled to a more missionary mindset. Being faithful now may move us out of our comfort zones and force us to stretch ourselves. The difference now is that the mission field has come to us – we have no choice but to rise to the occasion!

Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Memorials, honorariums, and gifts may be mailed to DHCA, P. O. Box 5659, Decatur, AL 35601-0659.

SENIOR

SCOPE

written by Jacob QuinnPresident, Class of 2017

For the past eleven years, we have been eagerly awaiting our senior year. For many of us, these senior classes will be the most difficult ones we have taken in our education thus far, but the challenge is encouraging knowing how far we have come. It is important for us to finish strong and make the most of every class and activity in our final year at Decatur Heritage. I am especially excited about this year’s fall sports. Our DHCA teams had outstanding seasons last year. It is going to be amazing to see how far we go this year! As seniors, we need to lead the way to make the most of every game, match, and meet to support our classmates, cheering them on louder than ever before. Likewise, we should be leaders in chapel, truly worshipping God together as a body each time we meet. This is our time to show what it really means to be a Decatur Heritage Eagle in and out of school, encouraging our classmates, and leading all students to glorify God in all we do and say throughout the year.

Maggie Holsclaw (’17) Shawn Metzgar (’17)

Marilyn Sample (’18) Ian Metzgar (’19) Margaret South (’19)

My name is Blakely Jones and I have been a part of the Decatur Heritage family for over ten years now. Throughout that time, I have had the privilege of viewing the school through several different lenses - a student, a teacher, the daughter of “Mr. Mayo,” and now a parent of two future Eagles. My family moved to Decatur in 2004, the summer before my junior year of high school. I graduated with the class of 2006 and went on to receive my elementary education degree from Athens State University. My husband Cody and I met during our freshman year of college, got married in 2011, and now have two beautiful girls, Shelton and Emme. I am currently staying at home with my daughters and working one day a week at Madison Hospital as a Health Unit Assistant.

As the daughter of a headmaster, I grew up in Christian schools surrounded by Christian peers and teachers and was taught from a Christian perspective. I never took those things for granted, but I also never realized just how much they would impact the rest of my life. During those two short years as a student at DHCA, I learned that everything in life could (and should) be looked at with a biblical worldview- whether that be on the basketball court with Coach Cochran or reading short stories in Mrs. Holland’s English class. In all of my classes, I wasn’t just taught the right answer for the test, but I was taught why and how it applied to my life. Mr. Holiday emphasized how crucial it was to develop an apologetic for my faith. Little did I know that that the countless hours reading, studying, and analyzing for his class would yield far more in my life than just a respectful GPA.

Our class verse my senior year was Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This short verse has shaped my entire life. I think back on the knowledge, wisdom, and Christian influences I gained at Decatur Heritage - all that has helped guard my heart as an adult in a world where being a Christian is becoming counter- cultural and looked on in contempt. As a parent, I hope my children will attend Decatur Heritage one day. I want them to be surrounded with Christian influences, learning from a biblical worldview, and developing a strong apologetic for their faith. I want them to use this knowledge to guard their heart and to be prepared to go out as salt and light into this world.

Thank you, teachers, for all you did for me and for what you are continuing to do for your students!

We chose Decatur Heritage when Hunter was entering second grade. He attended public school beginning in pre-kindergarten through first grade. I began to notice Hunter was struggling in reading and that’s where my journey began. I searched the internet for any kind of information I could find about Hunter’s specific issues in reading. It began to be very clear to me that Hunter might be dyslexic. I could not find anyone who truly understood what dyslexia meant and how to teach someone who has it how to read. But as I researched, I found that Hunter needed a very specific program to teach him to read. I called and talked with several of my friends who were in education about reading programs geared specifically toward dyslexia. I talked to Mr. Jones about some of the issues that Hunter was having in reading before entering the second grade. Hunter’s teachers, Mr. Jones, Mrs. Chiles, and Hunter’s classmates have been very supportive and understanding of his needs. The first blessing was that Decatur Heritage accepted our family with open arms. The second blessing was when Mrs. Chiles asked me what she could do to help Hunter. Mrs. Chiles embraced Hunter and began teaching him using the Barton reading program. I am forever blessed that Mr. Jones allowed us to find a program that specifically helps children with dyslexia. I have forever been blessed with the families and the children that Hunter has been involved with since beginning Decatur Heritage. I truly feel that God led us to Decatur Heritage to pursue Hunter’s education. Because of the support and encouragement of the teachers, students, and all of the faculty and staff, Hunter is a successful reader. We have encouraged Hunter to embrace his dyslexia and to believe as Eleanor Roosevelt quoted, “You must do the very thing you think you cannot do.” We believe that DHCA nurtures this attitude in all of their students.

Volunteers NeededLast year DHCA athletics had a fantastic year:  two state Elite Eight teams, four State Final Four teams, one State Runner-Up, five State medalists, and a State Championship in baseball.  Even though we had great success in athletics, we have seen a decrease in membership over the last few years.  We really need your help in changing that.

Financial SupportOver the years the booster club has contributed over $100,000 to the athletic department and we are happy to announce that the booster club will be covering the cost of the state championship rings for the baseball team.

Attention Grandparents We are also excited to announce a new offer for DHCA grandparents. The “Grandparents Membership Package” will be available for $250 and includes two All Sport Season Passes (allows free admission to all regular season DHCA sporting events) and booster club membership.

DHCA athletics had a fantastic year and with their success comes the need for more and more support from the booster club.  We ask that you please review the membership package options and consider joining.

The Eagle Eye Shooting Team placed fourth in the 2016 AIM Grand National Trapshooting Championships in Sparta, Illinois scoring 931/1000.

Team members who competed included Seth Thompson, Clay Shaw, Coach Tony Newton, Abby Terry, Jake Newton, and Robbie Ahlstrom.

Clay Shaw (’17), pictured left, earned fifth place in Junior Division B Class Singles scoring 196/200, received 75 and 100 straight patches in singles, and 6th place in B Class Handicap scoring 98/100. Abby Terry (’20) won third place in Singles Sub-Junior Class B scoring 194/200.
