BEING a LEADER john m. dettoni, ph.d.

International Chrysalis Institute [long document includes many other documents in these pages]

What is a leader? Think of 3 or 4 words that describe differbnt kinds of leader that you have known. JMD: Look for 6 categories below, with special emphasis on number 1, management . What kind of leadership activities do you find yourself doing? How would you describe your leadership style or type of leadership? List into seven categories: 1. Managing

1) To Plan: 2) To Organize: 3) To Lead: 4) To Control:

2. Laissez-faire 3. Authoritarian, Military, Pyramid 4. Autocratic, Dictatorial 5. Ego-centric 6. Democratic 7. Developmental, Nurturing, Servant-leadership SEVEN LEADERSHIP STYLES or MODELS What is a leader? Writer in USA stated: "There are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept." According to Stogdill=s Handbook of Leadership, there are eleven different classifications of leadership. --> SEVEN basic classifications of leadership styles/ philosophies as follow: 1. Management leadership

In many ways this title is an oxymoron. One either manages or leads; to do both at the same time is difficult at best and for most people, almost impossible.

Management traditionally has four functions, none of which is truly leadership. 1) Function: To Plan:

determines present and future needs, establishes objectives, assigns priorities, determines procedures and processes to do work and supervise people

Comment [COMMENT1]:

2) Function: To Organize:

determines the structure of an organization, delegates work to others, establishes and maintains relations between parts.

3) Function: To Lead:

makes decisions for others, motivates them to follow and do the work of the organization, controls communication between individuals and between groups, selects people to become involved with the manager, trains people for discrete, objective tasks.

4) Function: To Control:

establishes performance standards, measures performance, evaluates the measurements taken, provides feedback on performance.

IS MANAGEMENT LEADERSHIP? Management is NOT leadership because: a. Managers control people and things for predetermined goals and within limited resources of time, personnel, and raw materials. b. Managers use behavior modification, with rewards and punishment as the means to achieve their goals. c. Managers look out for the bottom line, for measureable, objective result because that is how they are judged. d. Comments of many who have been under a Amanagement style of leadership:

discontent frustration negative attitudes toward leadership use people as tools Ainterested in my back, not my brain@ AI=m paid to work, not think.@ AI do the work, the manager gets the credit.@ Interested in person b/c of what he/she can do for company, not interested in the person

as a human being. Management makes all decisions, expects others to carry out the decisions.

(Some of these were suggested and others are direct quotes form Myron Rush, Management: A

Biblical Approach, pp 12-13.) e. Managers are not leaders! The church and other Christian institutions are full of managers. But where are the leaders? 2. Laissez-faire leadership Characterized by a "laid back" approach. Little or no direction is given; No vision is developed and shared; No resources are amassed; Not much of anything else is done Allows others go about their tasks without interruption

with little or no help from leader. (Too many pastors and officially elected church leaders function in this manner, with the result that they do not provide direction and help for the local church or denomination.) 3. Authoritarian, Military, Pyramid Leadership

Often found in the military and other more authoritarian types of organizations. Top-down flow of authority Those at the bottom follow orders from those higher up. Lower person has less opportunity to have input less likely one will be involved in decision- making. Decisions are made at or near the top and are expected to be followed. Chain of command and everyone has his or her place and job in that chain. Everyone reports to someone else. (This type of leadership has a very serious role in certain social situations, namely, in the military. Under normal circumstances this form of leadership should not be exercised in the church.) 4. Autocratic, Dictatorial, Leadership Dictatorship-- pastor or chairperson of an official board issues edicts and decrees,

demands absolute obedience. No one has authority, power or responsibility to question the person or issues. No one has the authority to do anything other than what has been decreed and commanded. Power resides in one person situated at the top All others are below him or her. Absolute power focused in one person. Ego-centric Centered on what leader wants, Results of any actions by those led: 1) are to make leader look good in eyes of others 2) make leader feel good 3) boost leaders ego, self-infatuation e.g., James and John C Mark 10:35-41

Page 4: BEING a LEADER Comment [COMMENT1]: john m. dettoni, ph.d ... · (Too many pastors and officially elected church leaders function in this manner, with the result that they do not provide

(Church leaders rationalize this form of leadership because they feel that since they have the responsibility to make things happen, they should have the power also. This form of leadership is antithetical to all of biblical revelation. Even God does not command us to a relationship with Him -- He invites us.) 5. Ego-Centric leadership centered on what leader wants, results of any actions by those led: 1) are to make leader look good in eyes of others 2) make leader feel good 3) boost leaders ego, self-infatuation, e.g., James and John C Mark 10:35-41 6. Democratic Leadership Continuous debate over values, goals, priorities, policies, and programs Leaders seek to influence the debate, After the debate is over, people vote and the majority wins. Leaders then take up the majority cause and make it happen. (If there is a lack of clear consensus or a slim majority, then democracy becomes difficult to operate. Since a democratic leader never knows when the majority will change its mind and will vote against a leader, democratic leaders stay tuned to the majority and likewise to the minority just in case the minority turns into a majority. This type of leadership is often found in churches, but it lacks biblical foundation and is ultimately disruptive or leads to paralysis by committee and consensus.) 7. Developmental, Nurturing Servant Leadership Not: concerned with power, authority, management, motivation, inducement, or reinforcement of behaviors. Not concerned only with getting a job done efficiently. IS: concerned with effectiveness, with doing the right thing and doing it "right"! AND helping to learn, grow, and develop as human beings made in image of God Characterized by being servants,

ministering to people's needs, accepting and sharing with each other, growing into a community of interdependent co-laborers, helping people learn to do task and developing as human beings at same time

Primary biblical model of Jesus and the apostles is developmental. Fits the picture of the church as a community of believers who: belong to Christ and to each other,

Page 5: BEING a LEADER Comment [COMMENT1]: john m. dettoni, ph.d ... · (Too many pastors and officially elected church leaders function in this manner, with the result that they do not provide

who minister to each other in order to build each other up in the faith

(Romans 12:4-8; Ephesians 4:11-16). in order to do the work of the ministry in order to build the Church of Christ

with the result that the Kingdom of God (i.e., Rule of Christ) reaches into more lives,

societies, and cultures

Developmental/Nurturing Servant leadership seeks: C to help those involved to learn, grow, mature, i.e., to develop in the exercise of their God-given gifts, C to accomplish their God-inspired vision and God-revealed tasks. Purpose of developmental leadership is to seek to help people to get on with their own development as persons and to be effective in their calling to minister to the world = Build the Kingdom of God

not personal kingdom not organization=s kingdom

[We see more of dev./nurturing servant leadership in the following study of Script. ] HRISTIAN PERSPECTIVES ON LEADERS AND LEADERSHIP I. Biblical Material -- Inductive Bible study in small groups II. CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVES on LEADERS and LEADERSHIP: Biblical Perspectives on Relationship between Effective Biblical Leaders and those Lead A. Small groups, Inductive Bible Study of Scripture passages below, asking these questions:

What needs caused leadership to exist? What characteristics does Scripture state should leaders have?

What role do age, sex, nationality, ethnicity have in choosing leaders? I. Num. 11:11-17, 24-27 Ex. 18:13-26 II. Acts 6:1-4 1 Tim. 3:1-15 1 Pet. 5:1-11 Mk. 10:35-45 III. Exodus 7:6-7

Problem: Tasks too great for one person/leader Need Gifted and empowered people Need these people to share work C co-workers Hope for more (Num. 11:29)

2. Acts 6:1-4 1 Tim. 3:1-15 Spl characteristics of 1 Peter 5:1-11 Leaders Mark 10:35-45

3. What is role of age, sex, ethnic background, other externals? 1 Sam. 16:7 -12 -- David-- young man, prob. 12; not an elder; older brothers rejected! Judges 4:1-10 Deborah prophetess, lead Israel Acts 7:58-8:1 -- Paul, a very young man at this time Gal. 3:28; Acts 16:1-3 B Sex, nationality, race not important in the Kingdom 1 Tim. 4:12 B youth be example in all areas 1 Tim. 5:1 -- Young Timothy: ADo not speak harshly to an older man, but speak to him as to a father...@(NRSV) Why need leaders? 4. Common elements in above: 1). Most jobs in the governance and extension of the Kingdom of God on this earth are too large for one person, tasks are too great and too many, and too demanding for one person to be responsible for all of it. 2). Christ gave the tasks of leadership to all believers, not to just a select few. All who are his disciples are expected to use their gifts in various aspects of leadership, small or great. 3). Leaders ARE gifted Rom. 12:6 All have different gifts, all of us have: Holy Spirit, Fruit of the Spirit, Gifts of the Holy Spirit 4). Christian Leaders need to: know Christ personally be a Transformed & continually transforming person filled with Holy Spirit walking in the Spirit giving evidence of fruit of Holy Spirit

( Gal.5:22-23) spiritually minded == Spiritual, high moral, ethical character (Rom 8:5-14; Phil. 4:4-9) know Scripture C biblically literate have a good theology Aholding firm the faith@

know how to teach and lead continually growing in leading and teaching skills 5). Need to be co-workers with each other and the people they lead --

Not boss, chief. Rather, as co-workers with God and each other

1 Cor. 3:9 6). All are called by God to Service -- Jn 20:21

regardless of age, sex, nationality/ethnicity Need Christian leaders who lead biblically, not bosses who are Christians B. In Small Groups: 1 Peter 5:1-14 see next page for study guide and then commentary. 1 Peter 5:1-11 NOTE THE CONTRAST BETWEEN TWO TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

NOT THIS BUT THIS v. 1 v. 2 v. 3 v. 4 vv. 5, 6 v. 7 vv. 8-9 vv. 10, 11 (Possible descriptions for this type?) (Possible descriptions for this type?) This model is applicable not only for leadership in the Church but for all Christians who seek to be leaders both in the Church and/or secular world. Conclusions: Leaders need to support each other, e.g., elders and younger ones. Leaders need to take seriously their responsibility to lead by behavior, example, attitudes, and Being as they relate to others.

Non-Developmental NOT THIS

v. 1 elder as dictator, ego-centric, boss rather than as shepherd v. 2 Compulsion,

duty, obligation reluctantly FORCED

v. 2 Greed for money selfishness, egocentric zeal for self, money

a job v. 3 Lord it over Entitled to respect

Authoritarian, tyrant, domineering Organizational mind set of power, position, prestige

v. 4 reward: short-term glory of others v. 5,6 Proud, unsubmissive

Developmental, Nurturing/Serving YES THIS

Elders = "older ones in leadership" Peter: Fellow elder, one among many, not favored, not superior position, not first among equals! Rather: equality, an elder together (sumpresbuteros) Why Afellow elder?@ Be Shepherds Feed, Care for the flock as overseers (episkopountes) = active actions, not passive, Responsibility care, feed, to act like a shepherd. cf. Ezek. 34; Ps. 23; Jn 10 Willingly, following God's will "as God wants you," Note: as God wants, literally: "according to God" God calls us to leadership: Mk. 1:17-18; 2:14 Eagerly, willingly, called Ministry of shepherd-servant leader = compassion, concern, love, care, and hard work! not based on duty or compulsion. Force not conducive to these Selflessly, other centered zeal for God, calling/vocation! Entrusted with sheep, to care for them --being a shepherd-leader, servant-leader/elder. Sheep are not one's own, owner entrusts them to the shepherd-servant-leader. Be Example --live in church is as family, organism, not organization. Chief shepherd cf. Heb. 13:10; Jn 10:11,14. Lord gives authority & power; leaders never have power & authority on own; power and authority are always derived, gifts to be used for Christ and His Kingdom. He will reward a crown of glory that never fades

Stiff-necked, resistant, proud, Self-sufficient, independent Take care of self v. 7 Anxious

vv 8-9 Negative character traits: spiritually immature, unspiritual:

Lacking self-control Lethargic, inattentive Vacillating

Being devoured by Satan and yielding to him vv.10-11

Submissive: younger to older. Why important? Because especially in persecution, not need hot-headed, careless, impetuous, non-thinking young rebels. Clothe selves with humility (apron of slave, marked their status as slaves -- cf. Jn 13:4) Humble towards each other Christ will lift you up eventually with the glory which being humble you did not have during leadership Why mutual humility? Espec.. in light of v. 5 re younger vs. older? B/c elders need to recognize younger leaders and their contributions. Elders not equal omniscience! Need input of younger. Only God is all knowing and He not share glory with others. cf Isa. 42:8. Cast all anxiety on him --entrusting self to Christ! Like getting on a horse: entrust self to horse Peaceful, not anxious. "He cares for you" so relax. Why? b/c leaders concern for future, plans, execution of plans, etc. Concern that everything works out well. Positive Character Traits: spiritually mature, a spiritual person: Self-controlled Alert Stand firm b/c of Satan, b/c of difficulties Resisting Satan Submit to God

Results after suffering, difficulties: God of grace will-- Restore (mending holes in net, setting a broken bone) Strengthen, Make you firm, Steadfast (Literally: He himself will restore (what is broken so that it is as good as new); He will :

1) confirm, establish, strengthen 2) strengthen, make strong 3) establish, strength, as a strong and firm foundation). That is, solid standing, firm foundation, unshakable.

Therefore, serve each other regardless of who they are and regardless of who they relate to. All function in various leadership capacities because all are priests, priesthood of all believers ( 1 Peter 2:5). We are in a brotherhood/sisterhood, family of God of nurturing, maturing, shepherd-servant-leaders. Regardless of our roles we are to one degree or other some sort of leader:

husband/wife, parent, child, formal leader in church (appointed, elected) informal leader, pastor, teacher, small group leader.

Take a Christian perspective on leadership into the marketplace

C act as salt and light to those whom we lead in the secular world. Christians do not live a bifurcated life: spiritual, Godly in church; worldly, unspiritual in the secular world. Rather an integrated, spiritual life in all areas, arenas. If these things are true, how will your leadership be affected in your:

HOME? WORK? CHURCH? IN SMALL GROUPS:

1 THESSALONIANS 2:3-13 A BIBLICAL LEADER/TEACHER PARADIGM

First Century model of Sts. Paul, Silas, & Timothy to people in Thessalonika, Greece Instructions: 1. Read 1 Thess. 2:7-13 to yourself. Then someone in your small group please read it aloud, preferably in another translation. 2. Answer the following questions a. What is the APPROACH that Paul and others took with the Thessalonians?

How do these characteristics relate to leadership? b. How is leading/teaching like being a mother? That is, what characteristics of being a mother does Paul apply to leaders/teachers who ministered in Thessalonica?

How do these characteristics relate to leadership? c. How is leading/teaching like being a father? That is, what characteristics of being a father does Paul apply to leaders/teachers who ministered in Thessalonica?

How do these characteristics relate to leadership? 3. COMMENTARY by John Dettoni on -- 1 Thess. 2:3-13 1. vv. 3-6 Approach: v. 3 appeal : not error or impure motives

not tricking them v. 4 approved by God

entrusted with Gospel not pleasing humans but God

v. 5 not flattery not hypocrites: mask not greedy

v. 6 not looking for praise from men, not from Thessalonians or anyone SUM: authentic, transparent, truthful, God-pleasing

1325

2. v. 7 AS MOTHER nursing her child: GENTLE --like a mother = Caring, nurturing, giving selflessly of self for nurture of others, caring. Meaning of ANurture@ 3. v. 8 Love --share Gospel and own lives

Gave of themselves - 1 Cor. 13: 4-7; 2 Cor 7 & 8 generosity of people in giving not only money, but their very selves.

4. v. 9 Worked, Toiled, Hardships --for their sakes

Just like the wife & mother of Prov. 31. 5. v. 10 Lived as examples: holy, righteous, blameless C demonstrated what a Christ-like leader is and does. No bald-headed salesman selling hair grower. Lead by example and life and personal demonstration,

not just by talk. 6. v. 11 As FATHER --Encourage - "Come along side of" (Παρακαλεω) Holy Spirit & leaders/teachers counsel, encourage help others 7. v. 11 As Father --Comfort --( Παραμυθεoμαι) to learn new things is uncomfortable, we bring comfort, cheer them up. Learning = discomfort because the old way is giving way to the new. More frequently look backwards rather than forward. Future is unknown, we fear change, we like the comforts of what we know compared to the future which we do not know and cannot know. 8. v. 11 As Father --Urge -- demand, urge, prod, push, exhort others to keep on growing. Greek verb ματυρoμαι, means to testify, address solemnly, insist on urge. Keep pressing people to learn, grow, develop, and mature to the point when it actually hurts you to keep on insisting that they continue to maturity. Not allow others to get comfortable and then in a rut and then to be dysfunctional. So much of the church in the world is comfortable with what they have done and continue to do in the same old way. Churches/people of God need leaders who urge people to keep on keeping on. SUM: Nurture

Love Selfless abandon Example

Work hard Encourage Comfort Urge/challenge

9. v. 12 Goal/Purpose/Outcomes are in mind: to live lives worthy of God who has called, gifted, empowered leaders and people to be co-workers with him for his glory and honor. 10. Results: v. 13 Learners received teaching-- not as teaching and leading from humans, but as it is actually--the Word of God 11. Results: vv 19-20 Leaders teach responses:

Hope Joy In which leaders glory (boast, and

delight, rejoice) before Crown Lord

For leaders, the culmination for this life is the learners: 3:8-9 We really live b/c they stand firm C Leaders have taught and led effectively. Now they can watch as learners continue to live as they were taught. Those led reflect back what they have been taught and how and what the leadership

demonstrated to those whom they led. 12. Leaders give thanksgiving and prayer: 3:9-13 v. 9 Thank God for learners vv. 10-11 Prayer that see them and meet them vv. 12-13 Blessing C Leaders impart a blessing to them again. Therefore, Based on 1 Thess. 2 & 3, Biblical Characteristic of leaders:

What conclusions can you make? Who or what is the focus for Paul, Silas, Luke? What does Paul=s blessing suggest regarding attitude and actions of leaders?

Continually seek to bring blessings to those whom they lead. Leaders lead not for their own good pleasure and to receive a blessing for themselves. Lead in order to bring blessings to others--they are servant-leaders who bless others, not bless themselves. Blessing others means not seeking our own will, our own agenda, our own needs, our own pleasures. Blessing others means losing our lives for others. Seek to serve others' needs, to help them to fulfill their needs and God-given tasks. Focus not on selves

Page 15: BEING a LEADER Comment [COMMENT1]: john m. dettoni, ph.d ... · (Too many pastors and officially elected church leaders function in this manner, with the result that they do not provide

1525

Focus on those whom they lead

in order to help those whom they lead to become equipped and fully mature and to do the work of the ministry

Not fulfill tasks of leaders, but to nurture others into maturity! 4. Review your list. Which characteristics are most important? Check the most important ones. Share those you checked with your small group. Come to a consensus on the most important of all the characteristics of leaders. {Assumption: all the characteristics will be important!} 5. By yourself, review the list again. Place a mark by those characteristics that you like to see demonstrated in those who might lead you. Place a mark of some kind by those that you usually demonstrate in your leadership. Which characteristics are often missing in your leadership? What do you have to do to make them a part of your leadership? SEVEN MAJOR TASKS OF LEADERS TASK # 1 OF LEADERS to ENVISION -VISION 1.Vision is a mutually agreed upon mission, purpose, direction, goals 2. Receive from God through interaction with the people an idea and ideal that provide renewed direction and/or purpose or new direction and purpose for the organism and therefore the organization 3. A vision is a fresh, new insight into how the people (organism) and organization can move forward to do new things with Christ and for Christ both in the local community and around the world. 4. To receive new vision from the Holy Spirit means one is renewed, refreshed, reawakened, and quickened to new life in Christ for the ministry of Christ for today. 5. To build the community to see the vision, and to envision a new future as God is leading 6. NOT Ahave the vision@ for the church/organization which leads to manipulation of others to Aaccept@ the leader=s vision.

BUT to Develop the Vision with the people C Leader=s task is to help others in the organization to define and refine the vision so it belongs to all

Page 16: BEING a LEADER Comment [COMMENT1]: john m. dettoni, ph.d ... · (Too many pastors and officially elected church leaders function in this manner, with the result that they do not provide

1625

who participate and are expected to fulfill the vision CHARACTERISTICS OF VISION: 1. defines, sets parameters 2. guides program planning, use of resources of people, things, and finances 3. remains flexible, open to modification as environments change RESULT: = mutual vision

belongs to all people own vision people understand vision people work willingly to accomplish vision

LEADERS and VISION C carriers of the vision Acarry the flag@ for the vision continually remind people of the vision continually stimulate people to keep on following vision TASK # 2 OF LEADERS Teach others -->transformation of being/person: Not information alone. Information alone never saved anyone. Not boss, command, order people to get job/task done. Not training:

We train dogs, cats, and other animals. Managers train Training focuses on pre-determined, discrete, easily measured outcomes that are

usually subhuman and determined by others (non-developmental leaders) Training focuses on efficiency in the organization not growth, development, maturation of

the person: --People and their needs are not the concern, --Achieving the behavior predetermined by the "teacher" is the only important thing. --People are trained to perform a task, not to grow and develop into the persons that

God is calling them to be. --Receiving information and overt behavior are the only things that matter. --Being, the "who I am and am becoming" is not important.

TRANSFORMATION = DEVELOPMENT/NURTURING Teachers help others to become transformed Foci: C helping people to grow and mature as God has

called them to be, C within their areas of giftedness, talents and life situations. C whole person, not just the pre-determined behavior of the "teacher". Outcome is MATURITY Maturity is more than just pre-determined behaviors.

Page 17: BEING a LEADER Comment [COMMENT1]: john m. dettoni, ph.d ... · (Too many pastors and officially elected church leaders function in this manner, with the result that they do not provide

1725

Development is concerned for the whole person, recognizing that discrete data are just part of the whole, not the whole itself.

Maturity, development are the growth and development of the whole person: physical cognitive social affective moral spiritual

Development implies facilitating what is innate, 1) Growth from less to more mature, 2) constant activity that leads to knowledge Developmental leadership helps others

to learn, grow, mature, to develop in the exercise of their God-given gifts, to accomplish their God-inspired vision and God-revealed tasks.

not to coerce or induce people to change their minds. PURPOSE: to help people to get on with their own development as persons to be effective in their calling to minister to the world. TASK # 3 OF LEADERS - To EQUIP -- Eph. 4:12 Teach others in order to TEACH,

NURTURE, Help to TRANSFORM

EQUIP in order to:

C develop Christ's character, C learn the skills of leadership, C develop, deploy, use, and continually improve their own spiritual gifts and calling/vocation to use their spiritual gifts for the King!

TASK # 4 OF LEADERS To ENCOURAGE -- As Holy Spirit does to us, so we do to others 1 Thess. 2:12; John 14:15-19, 26; John 16: 7-15

Be Barnabas to each other: Sons and daughters of encouragement TASK # 5 OF LEADERS To SEND/RELEASE people of God out into the world to be leaders for Christ & his Kingdom

Luke 9

Luke 10 2 Tim. 2:2 John 20:21 John 21:15-17 B feed my sheep & lambs

Not keep people captured by one organization and only for that organization. Go into all world to make disciples for Christ, not just converts TASK #6 To Organize, Plan, Execute, Superintend, Guide, Govern = Administer & Manage TASK #7 Constant Renewal: Self and help others to be, too III. N BEING A LEADER: DEFINITION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE BIBLICAL LEADERS Definition C leadership is..... 1. Fulfilling the Kingdom of God: doing the will of the Father,

and teaching the values of the kingdom. 2. A spiritual process and discipline involving inner character: -Commitment to Christ as one's Lord and the head of the Church

-Walking in the spirit and not the flesh -Losing one's self in sacrificial agape for and to others -Being an example to the believers. -Character is therefore " spiritually grounded, " inner dwelling, transforming one=s being, " demonstrated behaviorally affecting all of one=s life and relationships (including home, work, church, friendships, etc.).

3. A process, not a mechanical skill. Process is a constellation, an organized collection of attitudes & skills applied with sensitivity and wisdom to others

RELATED to A...an Art...@ below 4. An art not just a technical, learned ability or skill. Leadership is more than a series of skills applied to other people. 5. A person not a position. 6. A relationship not a rank. 7. A personal function not a power operation. 8. A responsibility not a privilege . 9. Empowering others, not maintaining one's own power.

10. Equipping people not controlling them. 11. Service not stature nor status. 12. A developmental nurturing relationship with people within an organization who:

-Share a common mission and visions (often helped to be identified and articulated by a leader).

-Hold shared values (what is important). -Mold and shape the vision together (becoming everyone=s mission and visions, not just

the so-called organizational Aleaders@). -Agree upon desired outcomes for the mission and visions. -Agree on goals, objectives, activities.

-Work together on agreed upon tasks that draw them together in shared vision and values. 13. Helping of others to:

-Identify their spiritual gifts -Enhance their spiritual gifts -Use their spiritual gifts -Evaluate the operation of their spiritual gifts -Continually enhance their spiritual gifts.

14. Not just getting the task done but doing the right thing and doing it right. 15. Building people not manipulating them merely to obtain quantifiable goals, "bottom line" objectives. 16. Not just getting tasks (jobs) done. Leadership helps people to be transformed so that they serve Christ in his Church and in the world that God so loves.

LEADERSHIP REQUIRES..... 1. Renaissance: Rebirth of character C rebirth spiritually to be truly spiritual leaders Definition of Character: Character is what we are existentially, the sum of our values, beliefs, attitudes, i.e., the things that control us from inside our hearts and minds Christian character precedes leadership responsibilities Rebirth personally to be truly in Christ,

not just in a local church or parish C a spiritual regeneration through committing one=s self to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord

Rebirth of one=s leadership paradigm Rebirth of action 2. Discipleship: B Following Christ as one=s Lord; Dedicated as living sacrifices to Christ, Walking in the Spirit, Filled by the Holy Spirit, Maturing in Christ in all things

Luke 9:23; Romans 12:1,2; Romans 81:-17; Ephesians 5:18; Ephesians 4:11-13

3. Vocation: Calling from God to help people

to develop, mature, and grow in order to do the work of the ministry

C in a word, to be NURTURERS - one who nurtures others

Nurturers who do three things: 1). to help others to grow a whole people to become more and more mature as God intends them

to be 2). to help others to identify, develop, and enhance their spiritual gifts 3). to help others in the use and deployment of their spiritual gifts for the ministry of Christ in the

church and in the world. 1 Thessalonians 2:3-13

4. Focus on people: Help all the people to go from what they are to what they are called by God to be. Leaders lead people, not organizations Christ said , "I will build my church." This does not mean a building but the people of God. Leadership Focus is not on organizational thinking and tasks, nor concerned with the maintenance of an organization and the organization's rules and bureaucratic Acorrectness.@ PEOPLE are the focus 5. Challengers, "boat rockers," iconoclastic: Challenge the status quo and traditions,

seeking new and better ways for effective ministry. Leaders readily recognized that God is the God of the NEW, not of the old only --

Isa. 43:15-19 BUT being careful to treat elders with gentleness and respect as you would your father (1 Tim. 5:1) 6. Values, beliefs, commitments: Shared ideas, attitudes, beliefs, commitments that members prize and treasure and therefore function with in leading Beliefs: theological affirmations about God, people, organizations, the Church, relationships, societies, future, etc. Values: things that are important C actions, view of people, view of organizations, etc. based on beliefs 7. Mission and vision: Mission:

the reason for being a leader, the reason the organism exists

Mission: a direction for what all are doing and towards which all are moving VISION: Driven by vision of people becoming more than what they are now,

of developing a vision of what God is calling people (organism)

and organization to be. Compelled by a vision of helping people to become

and to keep on becoming transformed people who in turn continually help to transform

themselves, their group, organization, and society.

Col. 1:28-29 C Saint Paul demonstrated this: A restless, fervent, energetic, always moving forward person who will not allow others to become complacent, passive, disengaged or disconnected. Driven by a SHARED vision that is shaped by those in leadership and by those who are led. Mutually OWNED vision because it has been developed in community, not in isolation by those "in power". Guard and keep the vision and communicate that vision constantly to those within the organization regardless of the organizations's size and complexity. Leaders are charged with keeping the vision alive before the group. E.g., Moses and promised land; 1 Tim. 6:20. 8. Trust Building trust in the Organism and Organization and its mission, vision, leadership, people 9. Communication: Clear, continued communication of

beliefs, values, mission, vision so that people share, shape, and own the mission and values and plans.

10. Building a nurturing, developmental, servant, gifted community: Community is based on the personally owned mission and values Must be a sense of community and communal beliefs, values, mission, and vision: Acts 15; Rom. 15:5; Mark 10:45 Build trust in the community's vision, in the people themselves, in the ability of the people to achieve the vision, and in the leaders. "God is leading us and therefore we can do it.@ 1 Cor. 15:58, we do not do God's work in vain.

11. Encouraging and equipping: Enable, empower, facilitate equip, encourage, and teach others so that all in the organism and organization can achieve the vision, attain the outcomes desired, and accomplish the tasks circumscribed by the vision, and determined by the operations of the people's spiritual gifts. 1 Thess. 2:3-13 Eph. 4:12, body builds itself up in love. All are to fulfill their mission within the values, mission and program of the organism and organization to which they belong. 12. Modeling and demonstration: Leaders lead by modeling and demonstrating what it is to be a leader. No Abald-headed salesman selling hair grower.@ Leaders lead by good example, not just by instructions and telling. 13. Organizing and managing: Whole process needs to be well organized and managed by the leaders. Organization and management are tools to

fulfill the mission, accomplish the vision, achieve the goals/objectives

14. Evaluation and feedback for correction and change: Constantly help all to evaluate and make corrections regarding: the vision, revising it in light of new data, experiences, insights, and keeping it fresh the organization and management to keep it renewed and renewing DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP Function: a leader is one who helps other people to grow, develop, and mature and use their

giftedness to further the Kingdom of God, i.e., Rule of God in lives of others. Purpose: in order to help people to identify, develop, exercise, and continually improve their God-given gifts, talents, and natural abilities. Outcome: so that the people of God in turn might be built up in love and minster to others in order to fulfill the purpose of the Church of Christ in this world. with the result that the Kingdom of God is built.

A leader is, therefore, a nurturing, developmental shepherd servant

who ministers to, for, and with others. APPLICATION TO LOCAL CHURCH Pastors: A pastor is not necessarily this type of leader. Often "pastors"are preachers/speakers and bosses, but not shepherd-servants of either God or the people. Laity: Laity, that is, elders, deacons, chair people, teachers, and other leaders in the Church are not

necessarily this type of leader! They often bring secular basically non-Christian leadership models into the Church without

thinking. JESUS AS A LEADER Jesus did not teach leadership skills and behaviors. Instead, Jesus demonstrated a life of leadership, explained what was behind his actions,

and provided opportunities for his disciples to be leaders, too. Jesus communicated:

faith B not just facts; way to live B not just words, understanding and wisdom B not just knowledge, purpose of life B not shibboleth, passage words, divine life B not just divine law.

IF YOU WANT TO BE THIS KIND OF LEADER, DO WHAT JESUS DID:

TAKE UP A TOWEL AND BASIN AND

WASH FEET!!
