School-Wide Rules • Wildcats come to school every day and on time. • Wildcats are kind and respectful. • Wildcats are responsible in their schoolwork, homework,
actions and learning. • Wildcats wear their school uniform every day and follow
hallway, restroom, cafeteria and auditorium procedures. • Wildcats take care of their school.

We will T.E.A.M. up for success when it comes to behavior. All teachers are empowered to handle most behavior issues in the classroom.
Teach Teach the children your expectations from day one! Be clear and
uncompromising about what you expect from everyone. Discuss why it is important to following the School-Wide Rules and role play how it would sound
and look in different areas of our building and/or various activities they participate in. Consistently review with the students the expected behavior and Winnetka’s
high standards of success.
Encourage Encourage the students to make good choices and follow all of the rules by
rewarding good behavior and by discouraging all misbehavior by imposing fair, consistent consequences that prove that you are serious. Try to genuinely
compliment or provide positive comments on a daily basis to all of the students. (Verbal praise goes a long way when implemented correctly!)
Think ally vs. enemy!! Win them to your side!!!
Apply Even when it is difficult, apply the appropriate reward or consequence in a timely
manner. Be firm, but fair. Follow up consequences with a quick one on one conference with the student to reinforce the desired behavior and what they can do to improve next time (teach). Refrain from showing favoritism, as no one is
above the rules. Remember everyday is a new day!
Model Be careful and self-conscious about setting a good example in everything that
YOU say and do. Show the students how even though you are a good model, you can aim to become an even better! (Good, Better, Best…Never let it rest, until
your good is better and your better is the best!) Ensure that you are not looking for negative behavior. “Highlight my strengths and my weaknesses disappear!”
4
Winnetka Elementary School Preventive Measures
Implementing PREVENTIVE MEASURES is crucial to any discipline plan! Please
ensure that all of the following are in place DAILY! Preventive Measures: Students tend to misbehave when they are disengaged, don’t understand something, feel cornered, and/or left unattended. In an effort to prevent misbehavior, all employees are asked to have ALL of the following in place DAILY!!!
___implement daily routines to help students know what to expect? ___plan and prepare for lessons? (have adequate copies, materials, etc…) *NOTE: You should not have to send a student for copies during your class time! ___teach with enthusiasm and energy? (Why should they be interested if you’re not?) ___deliver meaningful instruction at the student’s level?
(differentiated instruction…utilizes small group instruction to meet them where they are!) ___avoid down time? (Allow a student to pass out the papers. They should ALWAYS have SOMETHING to do or work on! Put up a poster with a list of things for them.) ___provide constant supervision? (At no time should students be left alone! NO EXCUSES!) ___highlight the students’ success? (Both academic and behavior) ___provide positive reinforcement? (You need to develop a positive rapport with them!)
Campus MAJOR DON’Ts: -DO NOT place students outside of your room or portable!!!! -DO NOT have students face the wall!! -DO NOT administer corporal punishment!!! -DO NOT keep students after school without prior permission from their parents!!! -DO NOT leave your room unsupervised!!!! -DO NOT let re-directing a student stop the learning of the other students!!! -Do NOT administer any type of physical punishment!!! -DO NOT ridicule, talk about, or belittle the students in any way!!!

Winnetka Elementary School Student Recognition
Purpose: To Improve Work Habits & Increase Desired Behavior
**Focusing on the positive goes a long way and encourages the students to work 10 times harder for you!**
• 100% Homework Returned Chart/Bulletin Board (Could be weekly or monthly! Then reward
toward the end. I have seen it set up where the rat is working its way toward the cheese, then they get to have a cheese nacho party. Be creative to overcome what YOU already know will be a problem. PREVENTION is the key! Inspire them to WANT to do!)
• Allow the student with the highest grade sit at your desk (Again this could change daily or weekly depending on your needs. They could even sit next to a class pet.)
• Computer Pass • Take the student’s picture and post it in the room, on the door, or in the hallway, • Allow the student to eat lunch with you. • Give the student a paper crown to wear, sign, or badge. • Allow the students to eat snacks/drink as they work. • Allow students to work on the floor. • Allow the students to take their shoes off as they work. • Allow the student to teach a portion of the lesson. • Give the student a gift certificate to a school event or a treat from the cafeteria.
(You could even hold a drawing or raffle for this. They have the little tickets at Dollar Tree) • Congratulate the student in front of the class. • Write a positive note to the student (or even their parent) • Allow them to sit where ever they would like (Open Seating) • Allow the student to be first in line or some other desired job. • Call the student and their parent at home to congratulate them on their success.
(Positive phone calls home go a long way!) • Post their work outside or in the classroom to be seen by others. • Allow them to share/explain their work with the class or another class. • Allow them to read to or share their work with a lower grade class (or stuffed animal or
class for lower grades)

Classroom Management: Teachers are responsible for maintaining good classroom management. Classroom procedures should be consistent. Remember, the best form of classroom management is to be ready and organized to keep your students on task and engaged. No “put down” comments towards the students will be tolerated. Teachers will refrain from touching students when disciplining them. Even a slight touch to the shoulder or chin will easily escalate the situation. It is expected that all children will be attentive and engaged in the instruction at all times.
Corporal Punishment: No one is to administer corporal punishment or have any form of physical contact with any student. Please ask for clarifications, if needed.
Behavior Referrals To Principal/Assistant Principal: To refer a student for disciplinary action or for a conference with the principal, a Discipline Referral form must be completed by the referring staff member (even if the student is not in your classroom). This form remains on file for review by any party with a vested interest in the student. Prior to referring a student, all other behavior interventions must be followed and documented as per campus behavior management plan. (Exceptions will be given to severe situations).
Pre-Referral Flow Chart:
• Classroommanagementbehavior: not turning in assignments, excessive talking in class, minordisruptivebehavior, etc.
• Officemanagedbehavior:threats(bullying),fighting,profanityoroffensivelanguage,etc.
Correcting Students in a Constructive Way
Correcting and disciplining students for inappropriate behaviors is a necessary and important part of every teacher's job. However, it doesn't have to be a negative part of your job. In fact, you can actually build positive relationships when you correct students. If you don't believe this, think for just a minute about students you have had in the past who came back to school to visit you. Often it is the students who were the most challenging and with whom you had to spend the most time who continue to visit you over the years. This is due to the positive relationships you developed with them.
The goal in correcting students should be to have them reflect on what they did, be sorry that they disappointed you, and make a better choice in the future.
The difference in students' reactions to being disciplined is often related to the manner in which you correct them. If you allow students to keep their dignity, you increase the chance that they will reflect on their behavior and choose their behaviors more wisely in the future. The correction process will be counterproductive if students are corrected in a manner that communicates bitterness, sarcasm, low expectations, or disgust. The goal is to provide a quick, fair, and meaningful consequence while at the same time communicating that you care for and respect the student.
Steps to Use When Correcting Students
1. Review what happened 2. Identify and accept the student's feelings 3. Review alternative actions 4. Explain the school policy as it applies to the situation
7
5. Let the student know that all students are treated the same 6. Apply an immediate and meaningful consequence 7. Let the student know you are disappointed that you have to apply a consequence to his or her
action 8. Communicate an expectation that the student will do better in the future
Key Philosophical Precepts When Correcting Students
• Correct in a private location • Treat students as you want your own children treated • Stay calm • Avoid frustration
Steps to Follow After Disciplining a Student
1. Touch base with the student 2. Acknowledge post disciplinary successes 3. Communicate with parents 4. Don't give up too quickly
Demonstrating Caring
Caring fosters a preventive approach to discipline, as students who feel cared for are more likely to want to please you by complying with your wishes and policies. It is a tragedy when a student mistakenly believes that his teacher does not care for or like him. In most cases, teachers do care but fail to do the things that directly communicate this valuable message.
Strategies to Show You Care
• Show an interest in your students' personal lives • Greet the students by the front door as they enter the classroom • Watch for and touch base with students who display strong emotion • Sincerely listen to students • Empathize with students
