ANY-box

Multiple Tests with a Single BaseANY-box is a multi-configuration behavior apparatus designed to automate a range of standard behavioral tests in mice. What sets ANY-box apart is its ability to use the same basic components in many different tests, thus creating a flexible and extremely affordable solution. For example, if you are using your ANY-box as an open field, but want to test animals in the light/dark box, you need only swap out the low-cost inserts.

ANY-box Core and BaseAll ANY-box systems are based on a core consisting of the critically acclaimed ANY-maze software and ANY-maze interface (AMi). The apparatus that sits on an ANY-box base (65101 pictured above) includes a camera to track the animals and a height adjustable infrared photo-beam array to detect rearing behavior. A single core can connect to as many as eight bases, and each base can be used to automate any of the ANY-box behavioral tests.

The Radial Arm Maze has been used extensively in evaluating spatial learning and memory. The apparatus consists of eight (or 12) equidistantly-spaced arms radiating from a small circular central platform. The design ensures that, after checking for food at the end of each arm, the rodent is forced to return to the central platform before making another choice. The subject always has eight (or 12) possible options.

The Barnes Maze is similar to the Radial Arm and Morris Water mazes, but without dietary restrictions, and with less physical stress. The Barnes Maze is designed for testing spatial learning and memory. Within the maze, animals are motivated to escape from the brightly lit, open platform to a small dark recessed chamber (escape box). During testing, the animal learns the spatial location of the escape box. The maze also includes false escape boxes, which help remove visual cues that might be observed from a distance or through an open hole.

The Morris Water Maze is a behavioral procedure device designed to test spatial memory. advantages: Elimination of local cues such as trace scents and no fixed-escape formula.

oPeN Field

The Elevated Plus-Maze is used to assess anxiety-like behavior in laboratory animals. The maze exploits the conflict between the innate fear that rodents have of open areas, versus their desire to explore novel environments.

The Elevated Zero-Maze is a modification of the Elevated Plus-Maze which incorporates both traditional and novel ethological measures in the analysis of anxiety. The design comprises an elevated circular platform with two opposite enclosed quadrants and two open. This removes any ambiguity in interpretation of time spent on the central square of the traditional “plus” design, and allowing uninterrupted exploration.

The T-Maze is used largely in preference and spatial learning tasks. Animals learn to alternate between arms, based on their memory of the previously visited arms, or choose an arm based on the reward pre-sented. The simple, capital T-shape design incorporates a single choice point with only two alternatives.

The Open Field is broadly used to assess exploratory behavior, and is validated for use in the measurement of anxiety-related behaviors. Circular Open Fields are also available. visit StoeltingCo.com or Stoeltingeurope.com

Ideal for the investigation of autism-related behaviors Social approach Resistance to reverse a learned pattern of behavior

the Sociability apparatus (3-Chambered Social test) is most often used to assess Autistic-like behaviors. Shortly after a period of habituation, a mouse’s sociability is determined by evaluating the amount of time the test-mouse spends approaching a wire cage, containing an unfamiliar ‘stranger’ mouse. In the second phase of testing a second unfamiliar mouse is introduced into the Sociability Apparatus. The preference for social novelty is then determined by measuring the amount of time the test mouse spends approaching the chamber containing a new, unfamiliar ‘stranger’ mouse (also restricted to a small wire cage), as compared to time spent in the chamber containing the now-familiar mouse. Resistance to change is measured by two “reversal learning” tasks. testing in the Sociability apparatus can be completely automated by the aNy-maze software system. Order aNy-maze separately, see inside front cover (page ii).

PArAllel rod Floor APPArAtus

Automated data collection and analysis Uses a specialized version of the ANY-maze software Durable, easy-to-clean Similar cost as Rota-Rod device, but with many more options

the Parallel-Rod Floor apparatus, designed for assessing the effects of drugs, brain damage and disease, on motor coordination and fatigue, is ideal for use with knockout and transgenic mice. The Parallel-Rod Floor Test's high throughput design makes it an extremely versatile and valuable screening and phenotyping tool.

Adapted from the apparatus first described and developed by Drs. Kamens and Crabbe, the Parallel-Rod Floor Test is a new model of ataxia in mice. The Parallel-Rod Floor Test allows for the simultaneous measurement of ataxia and locomotor activity, adding variety to the battery of other tests currently available.

Yields two additional, dependent variables:• Number of errors (foot slips)• Horizontal distance traveled (cm)

Using a ratio (errors per cm traveled x 100) to index ataxia (corrected for individual differences in activity), provides a robust and unique measure of genetic contributions to locomotor incoordination. This is in contrast to several other measures of ataxia, such as the Rota-Rod, where the param-eters of the task (e.g., rate of acceleration of rotation) have been shown to have large effects on the pattern of strain sensitivity.

Software IncludedThe Parallel-Rod Floor Apparatus uses a specialized version of the ANY-maze software to track as many as 16 Parallel-Rod Floor Tests simultaneously.

the aNy-maze Fear Conditioning System is a state-of-the-art system for accurately detecting minimal movement, and freezing, associated with fear. A specific version of the ANY-maze software is paired with, and controls, all of the components necessary to conduct Fear Conditioning experiments on mice.

The system uses the two most common fear conditioning paradigms:• Contextual Fear Conditioning• acoustically-Cued Fear Conditioning

Fear conditioning is the method by which animals learn to fear new stimuli. It is a form of learning in which fear is associated with a particular neutral context (e.g. a room) or neutral stimulus (e.g. a tone). This can be done by pairing the neutral stimulus with an aversive stimulus (e.g. a shock). Eventually, the neutral stimulus alone can elicit the state of fear.

the gemINI active and Passive avoidance System was designed specifically to test active and passive avoidance in rats and mice. Unlike many others, GEMINI’s hardware and software have been developed for the sole purpose of avoidance study.

Easy to UseGEMINI’s unique design allows you to run up to 8 independently oper-ated stations directly from your laptop using a standard USB. In addition, by allowing you to define a complete study in advance, GEMINI elimi-nates run-time data entry that could affect the accuracy of your results.

Scrambled Shock Provides More Accurate ResponsesThe GEMINI animal shocker – a solid state feedback-controlled, constant current shocker uses 8 unique outputs to scramble the shock across the grid floor. Scrambling the shock prevents the animal from determining a pattern and leads to more accurate responses.

Kinder, Gentler, Unconditioned StimulusThe Gemini System offers an alternative air puff unconditioned stimulus . This is a kinder and gentler unconditioned stimulus.

Hot or Cold Temperature Control Objective Pain Assessment Operant Testing and Measures High Throughput Rackable System Up to 16 Cages with a Single Computer 4˚ to 75˚ C Temperature Range Easy to Clean Easy USB Connection Designed for Use with Mice and Rats

the Stoelting OroFacial Pain assessment Device (OPaD) provides an automated measurement of hot or cold orofacial pain assessment in the trigeminal nerve in rats and mice. Using an operant behavior conflict paradigm, rodents voluntarily decide between receiving a reward or escaping an aversive stimulus.

The OPAD begins to work when the animal touches and presses between dual peltier-controlled temperature elements to obtain a liquid reward. As the temperature (hot or cold) becomes aversive, the animal can withdraw. The OroFacial Software will automatically track the number of licks, contact with elements, and amount of liquid consumed.

HardwareThe OPAD cage, for either mice or rats, is seated on a metal base that is easily cleaned. A metal rack is enclosed and can be removed and cleaned between animals. Animals are trained and tested in the cage; the reward bottle is positioned to allow access when simultaneously contacting the thermode with its orofacial region. The metal spout is connected to the data acquisition for recording each lick. In addition,

contact with the thermode will record every touch and duration. Finally the amount (grams) of consumption from the reward bottle is also recorded. Each cage is easily attached to computer via USB port.

SoftwareAll of the data taken from the hardware will then be displayed and analyzed using the OroFacial Software, a module of our popular ANY-maze software. The software will display and track, in real-time, the following events: temperature changes and contacts with the thermode, licks and weight of the reward bottle. Following completion of the test, the OroFacial Software will display graphs and statistical analysis of the experiment(s). Of course, data can be downloaded to other software programs.

Arthritis is associated with chronic, debilitating pain in the joints. Current metrics of arthritic pain are indirect, by scoring the level of motor activity or the animal’s weight distribution (Barton et al. 2007). Current indirect tests, such as the weight distribution correlate well with the level of joint pain, but such a metric is a composite picture of complex pain responses, and provides little discrete information about local stimulation and locally-evoked responses.

The quantification of localized joint hypersensitivity is common in the clinic, but not in animal experiments. In this sense, the new Pam device represents a step forward toward a multifactorial measurement of pain-related behavior in animal research.

The PAM device is the first instrument designed specifically to apply force to the joint and automatically detect the animal’s response.

Instrument ConfigurationPressure transducers: the PAM device comes with 2 different trans-ducers. Each has been tested and validated in the mouse and rat knee joints: small transducer is flat and round (ideal for mouse knee joint), large transducer is flat and round (ideal for rat knee joint).

PinPoint™ is a Precision Cortical Impactor™ used in basic medical research to replicate traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in an animal model. The system is designed to provide the user with precision control, power, and flexibility to generate accurate, reliable, and reproducible results.

Drive MotorThe drive motor is a linear unit consisting of an interconnected motor and ram. During impact, the motor is stationary, while

Microprocessor Controlled Software Interface Velocity (0-6m/s) Depth (0-5mm) Dwell Time (input in milliseconds) Seven Available Tip Sizes Graphical Representation of Impact Integrated Contact Sensor 360˚ Range of Motion

the ram mobilizes. This allows the motor to be of significant strength and durability to propel the ram with more force and power.

Impact TipsThe tips act as the point of contact during impact. They are manufac-tured as round or rectangular for TBI or SCI studies. In addition, the tips are available in seven sizes ranging from 1 to 5mm (tips included). Custom tips are available upon request.

Software InterfacePinPoint™ is operated by a GUI (Graphical User Interface) software package installed on any standard PC or laptop. It is a point-and-click application that allows the user to:

• adjust velocity, depth, and dwell time• Control vertical movements of the ram• Initiate impact• Record important notes• view, save, and export results

the Lab Standard™ Stereotaxic Instrument has been a standard in research labs for nearly five decades. The time-proven U-frame design provides stability and adaptability while the instrument’s exclusive, triple-lead screws allow for smooth, consistent movements with rapid positioning. Perfect for the researcher who needs an inexpensive, versatile and reliable instrument for stereotaxic procedures.

Building on the Classic Lab Standard™ design, our Digital Instrument offers greater speed of operation and increased accuracy. Fit with an easy-to-read digital display and sealed electronic sensors, operation of the instrument is easy and precise. Simply move your probe to an established reference point (e.g. Bregma), zero the LeD display, and move to the desired coordinates.

the motorized Lab Standard™ Stereotaxic combines the classic design of our time-proven ‘U’-Frame with customized motors and state-of-the-art software. Designed to adapt conventional stereotaxic systems, the StereoDrive software allows motorized, computer-controlled stereotaxic positioning in all 3 orthogonal axes. Integrated with popular stereotaxic atlases, the intuitive movement control enables unprecedented accuracy and higher throughput in all stereotaxic applications.

If you currently own a vernier model stereotaxic you should consider an upgrade. We can upgrade most major stereotaxic brands. Upgrading your existing stereotaxic to a digital model will reduce the risk of human error and increase accuracy (10 rather than 100 micron resolution). The large LED display is also useful for surgeries performed in low-light or constrained environments where reading the vernier scale is difficult.

upgrading to motorized will provide you with automated movement in all 3 orthogonal axes. This movement is integrated, controlled and directed by our innovative software. The software also provides a virtual 3-D map of the brain atlas and displays real time movement of the manipulators and provides a visual marker of a probe’s path through the brain.

The best method of determining proestrus stage

Powerful tool for the improvement of reproduction efficiency

Simple operation

Battery-operated

the Rat vaginal Impedance Checker is designed to obtain precise information to determine the optimum day for mating during the rat estrous cycle.

The electrical impedance of the epithelial cell layer of vaginal mucosa is measured at the frequency of 1 kHz by insertion of the probe into the vagina. In the proestrus stage significantly higher impedance is produced compared to that in the other stages of the estrous cycle. 3 kohm of impedance can be considered a standard for indicating proestrus stage. Measuring range is 0 - 19.9kohm.

The conventional method (vaginal smear method) is a troublesome procedure requiring skill, time and labor.

The Rat Vaginal Impedance Checker is a reliable time and labor-saving device. Operation is so simple a novice can easily use it.

AutoMAted Milker For rAt ANd Mouse

The Automated Milker provides researchers the ability to collectrat/mouse milk directly from the teat. The Milker collects milk fromlactating mothers by alternating negative and atmospheric pressures through two solenoid valves and a vacuum pump attached to a microcomputer.

Environmental pollutants, in particular carcinogenic substances and endocrine disrupting chemicals, are a worldwide concern. Theinfluence that these substances have on babies and their development, through breast or cow milk, is of great concern. The ability to gather milk from rats and mice, widely used experimental animals, will aid in advancement of research in this area.

Ideal for the analysis of breast milk composition

the Sentry ultrasonic Cleaner is a high efficiency cleaner specially developed to clean surgical instruments. Ultrasonic waves pump micron-sized bubbles into the water. These bubbles fit into the tightest spaces that would be impossible to clean by traditional methods. When the bubbles implode, water hits the instrument at speeds up to 250 mph-a very powerful cleaning action.

High-capacity elongated tank (250 x 150 x 80mm; 9.84L x 5.90W x 3.15H inches) Effective cleaning with optional heat setting Quiet operation Small footprint

Microwave fixation is the method for reliable and rapid fixation of brain tissue. If your research involves protein phosphorylation—no other method compares.

Installation and training Included Air-cooled system—no water needed! All controls are done through the touch-screen panel display Digital settings for power levels Improved safety design—less than 1mW/cm2 CE marked and approved Eliminates the use of other fixation methods such as paraformaldehyde/formalin

The In Vivo Microwave Brain Fixation System is the fastest and most effective known method for halting brain chemical activity. Levels of enzyme-regulated neurotransmitters, and other rapidly-acting metabolic substances in the brain, are stopped at the levels that existed in the living animal, brain size and structure remain virtually unchanged! The In Vivo Microwave Brain Fixation Systems have been used for more than 30 years to help uncover brain activity in rodents not accessible using conventional methods of brain fixation resulting in publications in Science, Nature, and many, many other well known journals.

Now this system is even easier to use, no water system needed.
