TRANSCRIPT
• Vehicle recovery can be a dangerous operation.
• This presentation does not seek to replace proper hands-on training nor can it replace the correct attitude and respect towards the equipment.
• Recovery equipment should be considered to be expendable and should be inspected and replaced at first sign of damage.
Safety First
• Vehicle technology and equipment is always changing.
• Recovery equipment is always being developed and improved.
• There is always something new to learn or to consider.
Always Learning
• Do you have recovery points?
– No really, do you?
• What are they made of?
• Where are they?
• How are they attached?
• What condition are they in?
• How easy are they to get too?
Only as good as the weakest link
Most 4x4s are fitted with ‘tow points’, some have “Recovery Points”.The major aftermarket providers have taken varied approaches to the problem of needing engineered recovery points.
Some basic principles
• Self Recovery
– Digging
– Fixing tyre pressures
– Unhitching trailer
– Maxtrax
Some basic principles
• Assisted Static Recovery
– Rated chains
– Winch extension straps
Using a static (non stretchy) strap does not store (and therefore increase) the forces at play.Quite often vehicles are merely stuck on an obstacle or just lack the travel or traction to maintain forward travel.
Some basic principles
• Assisted Dynamic Recovery
– Snatch straps are incredibly effective.
– Snatch straps act to effectively increase the recovery force by storing the force applied over time, and releasing it at the moment of retraction.
