Pronouns or Personal Words (Pwonon oswa Mo Montre Granmoun)

When speaking or asking questions, you often use pronouns, sometimes called personal words. Six of these pronouns are called subject pronouns. (Lè w ap pale oswa poze kesyon, ou yo itilize souvan pwonon, pafwa yo rele mo pèsonèl. Sis nan pwonon sa yo yo rele yo pwonon sijè.)

When you are talking about two or more people, including yourself, use the pronoun we [wi] (nou). We is plural. (Lè w ap pale de de oswa plis moun, ki gen ladan tèt ou, sèvi ak pwonon a nou. Nou se pliryèl.)

When talking or writing to one person, or more than one person, use the pronoun you [you] (ou.) (Lè w ap pale oswa ekri nan yon sèl moun, oswa plis pase yon sèl moun, sèvi ak an pwonon ou.)

You is singular when talking to one person, and plural when talking to two or more people. (Ou se sengilye lè w ap pale nan yon sèl moun, ak pliryèl lè w ap pale a de oswa plis moun.)

I am reading.

When you talk about yourself, use the pronoun I [ay] (mwen.) (Lè w ap pale sou tèt ou, sèvi ak pwonon mwen an.) I is singular, meaning one person. ((Mwen se sengilye, sa vle di yon sèl moun.)

More Pronouns

(Plis Pwonon)

Notes / Nòt : The plural pronoun they can be used when referring to objects and people. Sometimes we personalize animals by using the pronouns he or she when we refer to them. (Pwonon nan pliryèl yo ka itilize lè refere li a objè ak moun. Pafwa nou pèrsonalize bèt lè l sèvi avèk pwonon yo li oswa li te lè nou al gade nan yo.)

First, Second and Third Person (Premye, Dezyèm ak Twazyèm Moun)

The singular form means one person or thing. The plural form means two or more people or thing. (Fòm nan sengilye vle di yon sèl moun oswa bagay. Fòm nan pliryèl vle di de oswa plis moun oswa bagay.) First Person (Premye Moun): The singular form of the first person is "I," and the plural form is "we." You will continually use these two pronouns when you refer to yourself and when you refer to yourself with others. (Fòm nan sengilye nan premye moun nan se "Mwen," ak fòm nan pliryèl se "nou." Ou pral toujou sèvi ak de pwonon sa yo lè w al gade nan tèt ou ak ki lè ou gade nan tèt ou ak lòt moun.) Examples (Ezanps): I like my son. We are reading. [Ay layk may sonn.] [Wi aè rihd-ing.] I am hungry. We are at home.

[Ay am hann-gri.] [Wi aè at hom.]

First person, second person, and third person refer to personal pronouns. Each "person" has a different perspective, a "point of view," and the three points of view have singular and plural forms. (Premye moun, dezyèm moun, ak twazyèm moun, al gade nan pwonon pèsonèl. Chak "moun lan" gen yon pèspektiv diferan, yon "pwen de vi," ak twa pwen yo de vi gen fòm sengilye ak pliryèl.)

Beginners - Class 1 7 Second Person / (Dezyèm Moun:) You will use the second person "point of view" to talk to people. We use this pronoun when talking or writing to one or more than one person. (Ou pral sèvi avèk dezyèm moun ki "nan pwen de vi" pou pale ak moun. Nou itilize pwonon sa a lè w ap pale oswa ekri nan youn oswa plis pase yon sèl moun.) Examples / (Ezanps:) You wash the dishes tonight. (Talking to one person) [You wach ða dich-iz tou-nyt.]

Do you work in a school building? (Talking to one person) [Dou you wèurk in a skoul bild-ing?] The three of you are sitting down. (Talking to more than one person) [You stèu-dennts wil tek a tèst.] Third Person / (Twazyèm Moun:) The third person uses the singular, subject pronouns "he," "she," or "it" when referring to or talking about a person, object, place, thing or idea. The third person also uses the plural, subject pronoun "they" in the same way. (Moun nan twazyèm sèvi ak sengilye, pwonon yo sijè "li," "li", oswa "li" lè refere li a oswa pale sou yon moun, objè, kote, bagay oswa lide. Moun nan twazyèm sèvi ak tou pliryèl, sijè pwonon nan "yo" nan menm fason an.)
