Understanding and thinking like the main character of a story is important when reading a story or book. Some characters are easy to relate to, while others are more difficult to understand. What are your thoughts about Bud? Does he make a lot of the same decisions that you would? What would you do differently? How is his life different than yours?

Make a time line with small pictures illustrating Buds adventure in search of his father. Be sure to list the events in chronological order. Add tidbits of information next to each event listed.

At the end of the story, the band members buy Bud an alto saxophone. They expect him to learn to play so he can become part of the band. Imagine how exciting this would be for Bud! In the space below, design a jazzy poster advertising Buds opening night. Next, transfer our work to a poster board. Select the tools (colored pencils, watercolor paints, crayons, or markers) you will use on your poster. Be sure to include a title for your poster.
