The Taylor family are previous runners up in the Morrisons/Beef Shorthorn Suckler herd of the year award.

We were very pleased to welcome Tony Fountain from Australia to the Royal Highland show and he gave a very interesting talk on marketing. He obviously enjoyed his visit and is planning to return for next year’s show. It was good to hear an outsider speak so positively about our cattle and also about our marketing. He has given us some excellent coverage in his weekly bulletin the Drovers journal which I understand goes to 19 different Countries.

The new arrangements at the Great Yorkshire Show to accommodate the UK Beef Shorthorn Championships were very successful with the larger judging able to accommodate the large number of cattle in the ring

particularly in the group classes. The large crowd around the ring created a great atmosphere and the winners of each class received enthusiastic applause. It was very encouraging to see several members showing at the Great Yorkshire for the first time and I received many very complimentary comments about the show from people who hadn’t shown there before.

Royal Highland and Great Yorkshire Shows

Two of the major shows of the year attracted a huge entry of Beef Shorthorns. They were two of the best displays of Beef Shorthorns seen for many years and certainly helped to show the world that Beef Shorthorns are once again a force to be reckoned with. It was the best possible publicity for the breed and thanks go to all the exhibitors for putting on such a magnificent display. Congratulations to the two successful winners, N Massie and Sons winning the Royal Highland with Meonhill Centurion (below) & G Riby winning the Great Yorkshire Show with Stonehills Foxyfox (above).

Beef Shorthorn Society Open Day at Westerbleaton

The Beef Shorthorn Society are holding an open day at Westerbleaton Farm, winner of the Morrisons Beef Shorthorn suckler Herd of the Year Award 2013 on Tuesday 26th August 2014 at 1.00pm. Everyone is welcome but please let the office know if you will be attending to help with catering. SAC and NFUS are sponsoring the open day and will be in attendance. Jim Holden of Morrisons will also be there to answer any questions about the traditional beef scheme and hopefully to encourage more people to supply Woodheads with their Beef Shorthorn cattle. Ian Pritchard of SAC will give a short talk on the importance of health in the suckler herd. Full details of the event can be viewed on the website at www.shorthorn.co.uk

The judge Brenda Wear did a very professional job sorting out the large entry and the icing on the cake of a great event was the attendance of our Patron HRH The Princess Royal who chatted to the winners and presented the Brothers Colling Memorial Trophy to the winner Geoff Riby.
