    ACTIVITY STEPS (continued)

Explainthatmorethan1,500 2 children die everyday because o malaria. Malaria can be prevented insimple ways. Specially treated bed nets can protectpeople when they sleep; insecticide sprays help killmosquitoesinthehome;andanti-malarialmedicinescan prevent people rom contracting the disease orcure them i they contract it.

    Read the ollowing story:

Hello. My name is Evelyn. I am 12 years old. I live

in Zambia. Everybody that knows me says that I

am a big chatterbox. Sometimes I talk so much

that my tongue gets tired. Sometimes my friends

fall asleep listening to me! But only a few weeks

ago I was in so much pain that I couldnt eat and I

couldnt sleep. Worst of all, I couldnt talk. No one

knew what was wrong! When I first became ill my

mom thought I just had a cold. Then one day,

the whites of my eyes turned a yellowish colorand my mom realized I had malaria. She asked

Selina to come and help me. Selina lives in the

village and has been trained by World Vision to

help children with malaria. She took me to the clinic

to get medicine. She saved my life! World Vision

gave bed nets to everyone in my family. Now we

no longer have to worry about being bitten by

    mosquitoes when we are asleep.

Ask the participants to help you move tables andchairsoutoftheway.Thenmarkoutazig-zagpatharound the room using two lines o caution tape, making the path wide enough or the participants towalk between the two lines. Ask or two volunteers.Blindold them and instruct them to walk alongthe path without stepping on the caution tape.Chooseothervolunteerstoguidethemusingverbal instructions only. Every time a blindoldedparticipant steps on the caution tape, the group

should shout Danger! and the participant shouldstop walking. Beore continuing, he or she mustprovide you with an example o a danger tochildren, in a context o your choiceor example, thehome(leavingk itchenknivesout, leavingtheoven on, leaving cleaning chemicals within reach ochildren),onvacation(gettinglost),oratthepark(talkingtostrangers, fallingoffplayequipment, fallinginthewater).

Repeat the exercise with a ew more volunteers. Then share the ollowing key points:

Foroneofeverythreechildrenindevelopingcountries, surviving childhood is like trying tofnd a sae route down a dangerous path.

Povertyputsmanyobstaclestosurvivalinthesechildrens path. Those obstacles are things likepoor nutrition, dirty water, and unsae housing, all o which can cause poor health.

Poorhealthcanstopthesechildrenfromgettingan education, which is the thing most likely toimprove their chances o a better uture.

    Mostbasically,poorhealthkeepschildrenfrom

living a ull and happy lie. But remember, duringthe game there were people to help the playersalong their path! And there are things that eacho us can do to help children around the worldwho are most vulnerable to illness.

Start a large-group discussion on ways thatparticipants can help bring about change or thosewho are susceptible to malaria. Then conclude thesessionbyinvitingthemtojoinyouinprayer.Pray or all children and amilies who are aected bymalaria, and pray or an end to malaria.
