2019 Executive Summary

The year 2019 was a year of continued growth for the Bedford Township Fire Department (BTFD).

Having accomplished sweeping changes in previous years, the department focused on continued

improvement in nearly all aspects of operations throughout 2019. The following pages contain an

overview of department operations.

The department completed the first full year as a combination paid-on-call/full-time department with

four full-time firefighter/paramedics and 45 paid-on-call members in addition to three administrative

positions within the department. In addition, the department also completed the first full year as an

advanced life support agency with three equipped advanced life support capable ambulances as part of

the fleet.

The department responded to 2,842 calls for service in 2019 which is an increase of 126 calls from 2018.

This call volume places BTFD as the third busiest department in the county behind Frenchtown

Township (2,917) and the City of Monroe (3,986).

Medical emergencies continued to be the primary response request for the department with 1,984

medical responses. Dispatch to on-scene times for medical emergencies improved again this year with

BTFD having an average on-scene time of five minutes and forty-eight seconds for priority emergencies.

Of those 1,984 EMS calls, Bedford Township ambulances and personnel transported 159 patients to area

hospitals in the backup role to Monroe Community Ambulance.

The department responded to 49 fires this year including 22 structure fires. The department

experienced improvements in on scene times for structure fires again in 2019. From time of dispatch,

BTFD arrival on-scene averaged five minutes and twenty-five seconds.

The apparatus replacement plan moved forward in 2019 with the in-service of an ambulance, brush

truck, and quint. With these replacements, the department continues to move closer to NFPA

recommendations for apparatus age. Through careful planning, the department is projected to meet

NFPA recommendations by 2028.

The department wishes to thank the community for their continued support in or efforts to deliver the

best emergency service possible to the residents of Bedford Township in 2020 and beyond.

Fires Involving Value

Our biggest risk involving fires are residential and commercial

buildings. The emphasis on fire prevention goes beyond the

community’s commercial structures. Public education that deals

with electrical safety, home heating, and safe cooking is

emphasized to help families stay fire safe in their own homes.
