What is a digital native? Digital immigrant? Digital Natives: A person for whom digital
technologies already existed when they were born, and hence has grown up with technology such as computers, cell phones, the internet, etc.
Digital Immigrants: Those who were not born when digital technologies existed and are not familiar with the use of digital technologies.
Discussion: Do you think the concept of digital natives is true? Can people be born good at something? Can people who are
seen as digital immigrants become digital natives?
4
Some Statistics about Digital Natives On average digital natives spend the following amount
of time doing these activities before they go to college-
10,000 hours playing video games Over 200,000 emails and instant messages sent and
received Over 100,000 hours talking on cell phones Over 20,000 hours watching T.V. Over 500,000 commercials seen At the very most, 5,000 hours of reading books

“The Dumbest Generation?” Book: “The Dumbest Generation: How the
Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future” (Mark Bauerlein)
Claims that Generation Y is the dumbest generation. Why? Kids are writing more, but its online or in text
messages. Social networking sites give kids the illusion
they are the “center of the universe.” There are no true role models anymore.
7
“The Dumbest Generation?” Is Generation Y really the “dumbest generation?” If
this is true, why is it true? Why is the integration of technology necessary in
order to best meet the needs of our students? What can we do to get students to use technology
effectively? What is the benefit of using technology in our
classrooms?
