Oratio EloquentiumOur Savior Lutheran School presented an Oratio Eloquentium competition. Oratio Eloquentium is Latin for eloquent speaking. This competition for the sixth – eighth grade students emphasized three of the five canons of rhetoric — style, memory, and delivery. Students memorized the verses, poems, speeches, and letters from the Literature Learn By Heart curriculum.
The winners of the 2016 Oratio Eloquentium were as follows:
First Place - Gabe Mount, presenting a selection from Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”;
Second Place - Bella Adams, presenting Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar, Part 2”;
Third Place - Christian White, presenting “Paul Revere’s Ride” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The other finalists included:
Emily Cherington, presenting Queen Elizabeth the First’s “Speech before the Spanish Armada”;
Sarah Cherington, presenting Shakespeare’s “Henry V”;
Seth Eifert, presenting Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar, Part 1.”
All of the students did an excellent job showcasing the Learn By Heart curriculum, the hard work and practice they dedicated, and the eloquence and talent God has given them.
Winners of the 2016 National Latin Exam! These OSL students competed with thousands of students around the country on their knowledge of Lat in and anc i en t Roman cu l tu re . Congratulations!

Bus Blanket NewsNews Flash — April 24, 2016, we delivered the 4,000th blanket to the Big Blue Baby Bus!
These baby blankets are a great encouragement to the new mothers, given after they see the ultrasound of their tiny baby. Now participating in making these blankets with Our Savior are: Living Word (The Woodlands) 4 ladies, Trinity Downtown, St. Mark, Pilgrim, and new, Zion in Tomball. It takes a lot of willing hands to make this many blankets. There is cutting the flannel, then hemming it; crocheting of course; writing notes to pin on blankets, but there is also picking up and delivery from churches far away from OSL.
You all are to be commended for your support for this very special BUS. At the recent Houston Coalition for Life benefit, OSL again was #1 in contributing at the annual “walk.” This enables the BUS to continue its ministry to hurting girls. OSL and friends donated $41,133! GOOD WORK!
OSL members have been very generous these many years in donating to buy flannel, yarn, and notions. Thrivent Financial has also donated. Everyone with Thrivent is eligible to get 2, $250 VISA cards a year to buy blanket materials or other projects.
We always need volunteers. Will you cut the flannel for our sewers? Will you hem the flannel? Crochet? Do you know any other LCMS churches that may want to join in this ministry? Contact Cindy Wright at 713-201-3787, or Ethelene Marshall at 713-849-9266.
Many, many thanks to all of you from the Houston Coalition for Life, everyone involved, and especially the mothers we are helping to CHOOSE LIFE.
Baby Bottle Boomerang! Remember to collect your change for our fund-raiser for the Gabriel Project, which helps
needy, expectant mothers choose life for their babies by providing assistance. This event started on Mother’s Day, and after you fill the bottle with your spare change, you bring it back on Father’s Day. Thanks for your support!

Houston Coalition for Life BenefitOur Savior Lutheran was well represented on April 29, at the Houston Coalition for Life Benefit. Ethelene Marshall was awarded Volunteer of the Year, and Cindy Wright is showing off her award (pictured on the right) for being #1 in Bus contributions from The Walk last fall. OSL was also acknowledged for being the highest contributing church.
Pictured below we have Christine Melchor, Ethelene Marshall with her award, and retiring board members Dr. & Ann Stuckey. Our featured speaker was Ann McElhinney, who shared the story of her journey from film producer of “FrackNation” to being caught in the whirlwind of goings on in Philedelphia, in a story that the media was completely ignoring but became the next project for her and her husband, the movie, “Gosnell.” The testimony of how her life changed was riveting. Be sure to see the movie when it opens.
