The Rev. Gwendolyn S. King

Executive Board Member, 2014-2017

Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Gwendolyn S. King was elected to the board in July 2011 and

reelected in July 2014. She serves as chair of the constitutional

review committee.

Gwen has served Women of the ELCA as chaplain for two

triennial conventions and as chaplain and worship leader for

churchwide Today’s Dream: Tomorrow’s Reality training. She is

part of the TDTR network.

After thirty years of ordained ministry in a wide variety of

settings, she now serves as a supply pastor within the ELCA’s

Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod and the Episcopal Diocese of

Pennsylvania. Gwen served as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force

Reserves for many years, retiring at the rank of colonel, the first

African American woman to do so in the history of the U.S. Air

Force chaplaincy.

A member of Calvary Lutheran Church in West Chester, Pa., Gwen takes part in an ecumenical outreach

ministry to homeless women, providing shelter during the winter months. She has worked with the youth

of the church in mission through the Appalachian Service Project. She also serves as a member of her

synod’s Anti-Racism and Racial Justice Advocacy Team.

Gwen enjoys the outdoors and traveling, spending time with family and friends, and trips to the theater.

And she loves to sing. She likes to relax on or by the water.

Gwen is honored to serve on the executive board of Women of the ELCA. She knows that this women’s

organization makes a difference in God’s kingdom and among God’s people. When women are empow-

ered locally, nationally, and globally to live out the gospel, speak out for justice, use our gifts and re-

sources, study God’s word, and are open to the living presence of God’s Spirit in their lives, we become

instruments of God’s love and grace. Gwen hears that call to mission, encourages other women to follow,

and embraces the journey.

Churchwide Women’s Organization Representative at our convention
