Our goal is to create an urban edible teaching garden (different than a community garden) using Yolo County products, that is located at City Hall at the corner of Court and First Streets and managed by an experienced non-profit agency or young farmer that would oversee the development and management of the garden. We would involve Master Gardeners, 4-H, Yolo County growers as consultants, and community volunteers. We could offer educational tours and have a farm stand on site. The location is ideal because it would be adjacent to the Woodland Farmers Market, Woodland Public Library, and across the street from the Rose Garden.

In keeping with the mission of Woodland’s Dinner on Main – to promote locally based agriculture through education, community

outreach and networking, and to further the understanding of the links between farming, food, health and local economies – the Board is excited to have an opportunity to partner with the City and create an edible garden. What better way to carry out our mission and to demonstrate the City’s commitment to the ag community, than by replacing lawn for fruits and vegetables.

Our Goal

Having one evening where we all sit at the very long harvest table in the middle of Main Street and toast the region’s bounty is magical. But it is also the goal of the Board to expand upon this event by promoting and assisting like-minded programs that offer insights into what it means to grow food. Of particular importance for the Board is operating an urban edible garden that promotes our Ag industry and educates our youth – “our future farmers.”

We see the edible garden being used as:

• a food source for local charity groups such as the Yolo Food Bank, Fourth & Hope, the children’s farmers market, and for local farm-to-fork restaurants

• a teaching site for young people “Before your carrots were in a plastic bag, this is where they came from.”

• a place where amateur gardeners get instructions from Master Gardeners

• a sampling of innovative practices that are taking place throughout this region and introductions of new varieties

• a site for a farm to fork meal – breakfast, lunch or dinner in the garden

“We have always seen the miracle of watching things grow, of taking pride in something you can harvest.” - Juan Barajas
