Journalism has evolved rapidly in India and worldwide. Factors like fighting for independence and World War greatly influenced the growth and direction of journalism and as a result, rose several other fields of mass communication. Today, when one talks about studying journalism, it not only deals with print and broadcast journalism, but exposes the student to web writing, visual communication, photography, documentary making, editing software and so on.So how would you know if you’re fit for a career in journalism? If you wish to get into hard core journalism, you need to be inquisitive by nature. You need to have the ability to look into matters with a certain level of curiosity and also be able to gather the appropriate information from people. As a journalist, you must also be willing to travel. Since you’re responsible to gather information and news, none of it can be gathered in the four walls of an office. You are required to either travel to various locations or around your city, depending on the work assigned. Be it broadcast or print journalism, you must have the ability to write. You must be able take down quick notes and be able to process your thoughts.The main idea of involving other aspects of mass communication in journalism course is that we are living in a digital multimedia era and a journalist many a times is required to have several skills in order to move ahead in this competitive field. To pursue graduation, one requires a minimum of 12th std in any field, science commerce or arts with a minimum of 40-50%, which vary among institutions. When it comes to pursuing a masters degree, again, no specific field of graduation is mandatory. However, having a graduation in journalism or other fields of liberal arts like political science, gives you an upper hand for selection. Irrespective of your previous study, what matter the most when it comes to launching your career in mass comm, is the number of internships or exposure you’ve actually received prior entering the field.Since a course in journalism deal with various areas of mass communication, the job opportunities tend to be much more. In the field of journalism, one can become a reporter, correspondent, broadcast/newspaper/magazine journalist, copy editor, proof reader and so on. Apart from these, one can also become an advertising copywriter, public relation officer, content writer, photographer, documentary maker and many more. The demand for professionals is immense in the market and the number of graduates even more. It is in fact a competitive field and you need to have your USP to make it big.
