AccordingtotheUSDepartmentofLabor(BureauofLaborStatistics,U.S.DepartmentofLabor,Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2016-17 Edition,ManicuristsandPedicurists,the2015median(ormid-range)wagefor113,600manicurists/pedicuristswas$10perhour(andthisfiguremayverywellunderstatetipincome).Butfornailsalonowners,the potential earnings are much higher. Payscale.com suggests the averagehourlywageforasalongeneralmanagertobe$17.50perhour,andthatdoesnotcountprofitsfromthesalon,whichaccruetotheowner.Recentstatisticsaredifficulttofind,butastudybyLawrenceRudneroftheUniversityofMaryland(‘NailSalonWorkerSafety,’quotedatProBeauty.org)suggestedthe2003incomeforsalonownerswasover$48,000peryear.

Unlikemanybusinesses,youcanstartanailsalonwithrelativelysmallupfrontcosts.Forexample,youcanchoosetostartamobilesalonbusiness,orevenopenanailsaloninyourownhome,whichmeansyoudon’thavetopayrentorothercostsassociatedwithastorefrontoperation.Ontheotherhand,maybeyouenvisionyourselfopeninganupscalesalonwithallthefancybellsandwhistles.Thechoiceisyours.Whateveryourdreamsalonlookslike,youcanmakeithappen.Ifacareerasanailsalonownersoundsgoodtoyou,readon,andwe’llshow you how to get started.

beauty-related products with nail services to increase income and provide products their customers purchase and use. Still other salons provide additional services beyond nail services. These services most oftenincludetraditionalspaservices,suchaswaxing,facials,andmassage.Someevenincludemoreunusualserviceslikeearpiercing,microdermabrasion,tanning,andpermanentmakeup.Whilewefocusonnails-onlysalons,theinformationcontainedinthisguideislargelythesameinformationyouwillneedtostartanails-onlyorfull-servicenail salon.

Nailsalonsarealsofoundinawidevarietyofsettings,frombusyshoppingmalls,storefrontlocations,officebuildings,andeveninsideretailordiscountdepartmentstores(e.g.,RegalNailsSalonandSpa).Theycanbeinacommerciallocationorinsomeone’sprivatehome,or even be a mobile nail service that comes to the client’s home or workplace,ortomovieortelevisionsets.Keepinmindthatnailsalonstendtodobestinwellpopulatedplacessuchascitiesandsuburbs,asthesebusinessesrelyonasteadysupplyofdailyclientstobeprofitable,so it’s usually a good idea to concentrate on opening a business in these typesofareas.

Womenmakeupavastmajorityofnailprofessionals,97%accordingtoNailsMagazine’s2015BigBook(don’tmissthisexcellentresource,anannualfreedownloadavailableattheirwebsite).Whiletherearealsostrongethnictrends(51%ofnailprofessionalsintheU.S.areVietnamese,andinCaliforniathisfigurejumpsto80%;thenailindustryisoneofthefewindustrieswherepeopleofanyethnicorculturalbackground,andeventhosewithrelativelylimitededucationorlimitedEnglishskills,canoperateaveryprofitableenterprise.

Althoughthemajorityofnailsalonclientsarealsowomen,thistrendhasbeguntochangesignificantlyinrecentyears.Increasingly,menarerealizingthevalueandpleasuresofnailgroomingandothersalonservices.AccordingtoNailsMagazine’s2007-2008BigBook,89%ofEuropeanandAmericanmenfeelthatgoodgroomingiskeytoprofessionalsuccess.Thus,it’sbestnottooverlookthisgrowingsegmentofthenailindustrybyofferingnailgroomingservicesforbothmen and women.

•In2006,Nails Magazineestimatedindustryrevenueat$5.50billionandin2010,at$6.27billion;thatwasa14%increaseinfouryears,andsomeofthoseyearsweredifficultrecessionyearsfortheoverall economy.

•Andaccordingtothe2015BigBook,revenueshadsoaredtoanestimated$8.54billionin2014;that’sa36%increaseinjustthepastfouryears!

•Statistareportstherewere53,815nailsalons/studiosintheU.S.in2014,nearlyfivethousandmorethantherewerethepreviousyear.

•And theUSDepartmentofLabor expects employmentofmanicurists/pedicuriststoincreaseat10%peryearfrom2014-2024,muchfasterthanoverallemployment.

Itappearsthattheindustryisfarfromitspeak,astheeconomicoutlookforthenailindustryisoneofcontinued,steadygrowth.

The nail industry has proven through past economic slowdowns to be bothresilientandrelativelyrecession-proof.Whilepeopletendtocutspendingonluxuries(suchasvacations,diningoutandbigticketitemssuchascarsorhomes)intoughtimes,takingcareofthemselves,whichincludesgroomingserviceslikenailandhairservices,isconsideredanecessity(oratleastanaffordableluxury).

Thereasonsforthisaresimple.Manypeopledonothavetheskillstodo their own nails or keep their nails looking good.
