The June issue is already here, but you are likely getting ready for summer by the time the publication drops in your mailboxes. This means that school is about to end, summer vacations begin, graduations happen, and the grill is about to be used full time! This month we have some pretty cool stories. Make sure to check out the “Junior Achiever” story about Sydney Goodell. I am certain you will all be impressed by this young lady’s story along with her plans for the future. In addition, there is a really neat write up about Heather Hassebroek in the, “Meet Your Neigh-bor” section. Heather won the top award at the Ven-ture School competition. To say her husband Paul is proud would be understatement! Well done, Heather! Also, we will be doing things a little bit differently for the, “Home of the Month” section. We have randomly selected a house this month as the home of the month. We took pictures of this beautiful house and the address is listed within the section. Because it was selected, the owners will receive two free movie passes. The details to how you can win tickets to the movies is also in the, “Home of

the Month” section so check it out … there are two ways to get and one offers a better opportunity to win tickets than the other. As you know, June will bring graduation so please send in those pictures and any write-ups about your kids and the parties you may have. These are always a lot of fun and great to share with your neighbors. In addition, please don’t forget that Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19. Don’t forget to do something nice for Dad on his special day! That about does it for now. I hope your June is as great as I hope mine will be … There is a good chance I’ll be able to sneak away and get to Rome for a little over a week. The Pope needs to have a word with me … uh oh! CUSTOM STERLING SILVER Earrings

Earrings are always a great gift and they are so easy to make when you have limited time. Plus you can really cus-tomized them to match a specific outfit or sports team colors. I made mine in Waukee colors to wear when I go to my girl's school events. I will be the first to admit that my wardrobe is lacking in school spirit wear :)Items Needed for one pair of earring:

• 6 crystal rondelle beads size 4mm• 2 rondelle lamp work beads size 6mm• 2 rondelle lamp work beads size 10mm• 6-1/2" of 20 gauge round, half hard

sterling silver wire• Hammer & steel bench block• Round nose pliers & Flush cut pliers• Black Sharpie• Measuring tape• Polish paper

Measure out 6-1/2" inches of 20 gauge sterling silver, half hard wire and cut it. Then cut that piece of wire in half. Measure each piece of wire 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" from one end on both wires. Mark these measurements with a sharpie. Use you round nose pliers to bend the wire at a 90 degree angle at your 1- 1/4" mark then bend another 90 degree angle at your second mark (1-1/2"). Next thread your beads on to the longest end of the wire in this order: crystal, 6mm lamp work bead, crystal, 10 mm lamp work bead, crys-tal. Copy these steps on your second piece of wire. Using your steel bench block and hammer, splay (hammer until it is flat) the end of the wire on both earrings on the bead end only. You want the length of the splay to be 1/4" long on each earring. I think it also looks nicer if both earring ends that you

splayed are hammered in the same direction. Next take your round nose pliers and gently put a slight bend 1/2" up from the bottom on the non beaded side of each earring. Bending the wire slightly away from the beads. Use your polishing cloths to smooth off the ends of your earrings. Rub that end on your wrist to make sure there aren't any rough edges to it. Viola! Enjoy giving these new earrings as a gift!

molly’s musings

In the spirit of gender equality, this month I will address all of the fathers out there. Last month, the mommies got a chance to shine. June is for you, dads. And for the uncles, brothers, and sons too! So, put down the power tools and back away from the grill because this is your moment.

I might seem a little unqualified to talk about dads and their big day. You know, seeing as I am not a father nor will I ever be. I’m ill-equipped. And while I may lack the ability to become a father, I can tell you what makes a good father with full confidence. How can I do this? I have one of the best around.

Seriously, the best. Almost everyone can claim the same, but I challenge you to find a better man any-where. Father’s Day was made for men like my dad. He’s everything a girl could want for a father: calm, understanding, and generous. Of course, nobody is perfect, but I can assuredly say that my dad comes pretty close. And when he does mess up, his apologies are always as fresh and thoughtful as the frosting on the three separate birthday cakes he insisted on baking for my sisters’ and my birthdays despite them being three consecu-tive days in a row. Happy Father’s Day, dad, this one’s for you.

I can also extend a Happy Daddy Day to all the uncles out there. Uncles, like aunts, do some of the best parenting. They teach us important life lessons but are rarely forced into the parental position of disciplining. They give you advice when your room-mate ends up in the clink, tickle you until you can’t tell whether you are laughing or crying, and throw one-dollar-bills your way as bribery to get them a bag of potato chips and a cold beer. So thank you to all the uncles out there for making us the people we have grown up to be.

Here’s to all the brothers in our lives too! Who would I be with-out my brother? Brothers offer something particularly special: vigilante justice. They are the Batmen of families. When you come home crying because the mean boy in your class hit you,

A Resident’s Perspective:

Fathers ROCK!

your parents might call the boy’s parents or the school and handle the situation in a calm, rational, sensible manner. Not brothers. No, brothers don their superhero digs and deliver sweet, masked justice to your tormentor. There’s definitely something to be said for the caped heroes who call themselves “brother.” That’s a superhero name if I ever heard one.

And finally, a Happy Father’s Day goes out to all the sons out there. You may become fathers one day or you may not, but, either way, you fulfill your parents’ lives. If I ever have a son, my wish would be for him to become a good man. And with men like my father, uncles, and brother as role models, this wish is certain to be granted. To my future son, I say:

Son, be calm, be generous, be understanding. Have love in your heart, kindness in your soul, and a sense of humor in your back pocket (you never know when you’ll need it). Be a good provider and a better listener. Above all, look to those who have come before you. Do all this so one day the people who love you can tell you, “Happy Father’s Day,” and mean it as sincerely as I do.

youDid know?By Neil Shultz - Country Club Resident

Interesting Facts…

We all know our neighbors to the west, Waukee is one of the fastest growing cities in Iowa, but...

Did you know…

Waukee was laid out as a town in 1869 and, like a lot of towns in the late 1800's, Waukee has an early history in mining and sprang up near the railroad. When it was incorporated in 1878, the Waukee Cheese Factory was making about 2,000 pounds of cheese per week.

Early lore suggests Waukee was first named Shirley by General L.A. Grant and Major W.M. Ragan both former army officers turned real estate speculators but it didn’t keep that name very long. Although there are no official records on the name Shirley, there was reference to the name in the 1969 Waukee Centennial Book. Long time Waukee citizens tell the story that the surveyor of the original plat of land called it Shirley either after his wife or daughter. The Waukee Historical Society has research that suggests the name is an Indian name, but they have found nothing to support that or any Indian tribe with a similar name in the area.

There is also a theory the name Waukee means low lands. Some believe Wau-kee came from the Milwaukee railroad or after Milwaukee, Wisconsin. One fun theory suggests the name Waukee came from a mule stuck in the mud at the triangle and when trying to pull it out it called out - WAAAAAKK. No one knows for sure why Clive is named Clive and no one knows for sure why Wau-kee is named Waukee. General Grant and Major Ragan had great belief that Waukee would become a big town. If they could see it now!

Special thanks to Terry Snyder, President Waukee Area Historical Society.Note the phone number on the truck /leafguardiowa /LeafGuardExteri

It was Thursday, March 31 and I was off work and pacing the house, getting ready to head to the surgery center to have my gallbladder removed. I glanced out the window, saw something orange-ish and thought it was a neighborhood cat that has been prowling around our house. Upon closer inspection I was ut-terly surprised to see it was a FOX! He was slinking around in the courtyard on the front of our house. I couldn’t believe it! I hollered for Paula and we watched as he snuck around the still winterized fountain, ducked under a bench and went behind the bushes. It was then that we realized what he was doing. Earlier this spring a pair of ducks deiced to make a nest in our courtyard area, exactly where this fox was headed. Fortunately for her, the momma duck was not sitting on the nest at the time – however that sneaky fox, one by one – took all seven eggs that were there. He would take one, then run to a neighbor’s yard and we assume either eat or hide the egg – then come back, grab another and go

around the neighborhood

How Foxy!

to different yard, completely at random it seemed. I went outside to try to scare him away, but he was very determined and as soon as I would walk away, he would slink back to his mission at hand…errr paw. (? lol)

Name: Sydney GoodellHow long have you lived in the neighbor-hood? Since August, 2002

Who is in your family? Dad is Larry; Mom is Shelley; Brothers are Alex (15) and Nicholas (10).

What school do you attend? Dowling Catholic High School

What are your plans after high school? I will be deciding in the next week where to attend college: Either University of Iowa or University of Nebraska

What sports and extracurricular activi-ties do you participate in? Varsity Swim Team, Acapella Choir, Dimensions Show Choir, Piano

How did you get started with your sport/activity? I began swimming for the Waukee Rays when I was 9 years old and loved it ever since. I started playing the piano when I was 7 years old and began voice lessons in high school. My love of music led me to my musical activities in high school, which include Mixed Chorus, Acapella Choir, and my very favorite—Di-mensions Show Choir!

GOODELL Sydney

young achiever

What do you enjoy about your sport/activity? I loved the compet-itive atmosphere, camaraderie and friendships I made in swim-ming. It gave to me the love of a lifelong sport that I will enjoy for years to come. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I enjoyed my choir activities immensely and provided a nice balance to high school. Show choir was particularly fun in that it was also competitive but entertaining and fun!

Tell us something you achieved or some highlights of your ex-perience so far in your sport/activity? I swam varsity events in swimming all four years in high school and was selected for our regional team my junior and senior year.

How do you keep a balance between sports, school, and other activities in your life? Keeping a balance between my activities and maintaining above a 4.0 GPA was not easy. During swim season, we had two/day practices requiring leaving my house at 5:30 a.m. most days. Show choir involved several weekends and late practices as well. This meant little social life, keeping a good schedule and sleep routine, and planning ahead for long papers/assignments and tests. I am hopeful it taught me good college survival skills.

Name someone you admire. What makes them special and how have they motivated you? I am very fortunate to have been influenced by a wide array of very special role models who have helped me, prayed for me, taught me, coached me, shaped me, en-couraged me, supported me and loved me. Some of these include my parents, teachers, coaches, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents’ friends

Are you, or do you know a young achiever? We would love to feature them in the publication. Please contact me at [email protected] and I can help you provide us with the information

“MOM, I need help!” Hard working moms everywhere just can’t catch a break! At times, it may seem like you always ask yourself, “When do I get my time?”

Here’s how you pictured your life: married to your best friend, mother of beautiful well-behaved children, recently promoted at your well paid job, ample time to meet up with friends, and still enough free time to treat yourself. Seem a bit too good to be true? Mother’s out there are lucky if they have five minutes to themselves during the younger years of their children’s lives.

But when is it time to have some YOU time? You owe it to your-self to feel mentally and physically good. You need to fill the “me” tank every now and again to ensure you can give your full atten-tion to all of the daily demands whether that entails your kids, spouse, job or home.

So how do we fill this “me” tank? The answer depends on what your goals are. Many women struggle with dropping their baby

weight fast. They experience stretched out skin, unwanted fat and sagging breasts due to post pregnancy.

There is a great amount of pressure on today’s moms to look good immediately after pregnancy. At Des Moines Plastic Surgery, we encourage women to exercise and maintain a balanced diet be-fore considering surgery. Ideally we would like you to be within twenty pounds of your goal weight before surgery and also want you to wait three to six months after you stop nursing before considering any kind of breast surgery. “We typically see women when they are done having children. The most common procedures are tummy tuck, breast augmen-tation and/or breast lift and liposuction,” said Dr. David Rob-bins, a quadruple board certified plastic surgeon at Des Moines Plastic Surgery. “Patients love coming to us because if you aren’t a candidate for surgery or may not want the downtime, we offer non-surgical options as well.”

The non-surgical choices at the Healthy Skin & Laser Center within Des Moines Plastic Surgery include laser treatments to remove brown spots, fine lines, facial veins and uneven tone and texture. We also offer non-surgical fat reduction, such as CoolS-culpting and skin tightening. We provide a unique skin analysis,

free of charge, to educate you on your skin. Our injectables for facial lines and wrinkles restore the volume of the face, specifi-cally the cheeks, laugh lines and lips.

Moms, you are important to us and this is why we want to celebrate you. Visit Des Moines Plastic Surgery and the Healthy Skin & Laser Center and allow us to help you reach your goals, whether surgical or non-surgical. You WILL experience the dif-ference at Des Moines Plastic Surgery with our fully accredited private operating room, highly experienced and educated staff, and Iowa's only quadruple board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Da-vid Robbins and staff is your best choice to help keep you looking and feeling forever young.

Thanks and enjoy the movies! Thomas F. (Tom) [email protected]

13730 Lakeview Drive

Dear Country Club Residents, We are doing something a little different and certainly more fun this year for the, “Home of the Month” section of your neighbor-hood newsletter. If you would like to have your home photographed on the inside or just the outside, simply get ahold of me through an e-mail or telephone call and we will have someone come out to your house and take pictures. By doing so, you will receive two (2) free movie passes to the Cinemark 20 at Jordan Creek. If I don’t hear back from anyone, an address will be chosen ran-domly from the mailing list and the house will be featured (just on the outside) for the, “Home of the Month” section. This is still pretty cool because the homeowners still receive two (2) free movie passes. The only difference is, this particular option is a bit more random and less of an opportunity to receive movie passes. Either way though, this is a fun way to showcase the beautiful homes of Country Club…a premier neighborhood in the greater Des Moines area.

Should You Retire In

“Stages”?

taking withdrawals (“required minimum distributions,” or RMDs) from these accounts. You can’t delay taking these payments, which are taxable. But if you did retire in stages and continued to work part-time, past when you expected to completely retire, you may be able to stick with the required minimum withdrawals at least for a while, rather than taking out larger amounts immedi-ately. In this way, you could potentially keep more of your retire-ment funds growing in your tax-deferred accounts.

Investment mix – If you planned to retire at a certain date, you might have created a specific mix of investments designed to provide you with sufficient income to last your lifetime. But if you continue to work, you may not have to rely so heavily on your port-folio – that is, your IRA, 401(k) and all investments held outside these retirement accounts – to help you meet your income needs. Consequently, during these extra years of work, you may be able to withdraw less from your portfolio, thus potentially having more assets to provide for your income needs down the road.

As you can see, a “phased-in” retirement could help provide you with options in making a variety of financial decisions. So, plan carefully before you exit the workforce – a gradual departure may be a good way to say “goodbye.”

For many people, the concept of retirement can be scary, both emotionally and financially. If you, too, feel somewhat anxious about what awaits you, you might feel more comfortable in know-ing that, depending on where you work, you might be able to retire in stages.

As its name suggests, retiring in stages typically involves reducing one’s work hours from full-time to part-time, and then, eventually, to complete retirement. If you enjoy the social relationships of work, and you define part of your identity with what you do at your job, this type of gradual transition may be easier for you to accom-modate than the abrupt transition from “worker” to “retiree.”

As for the financial aspects of such a move, you will want to plan ahead. A “phased-in” retirement can affect your investment and income strategies in several areas, such as these:

Social Security – You can start collecting Social Security as early as age 62, but your monthly payments will only be about 75% of what you’d get if you wait until you reach 66 (assuming that 66 is your “full” retirement age). And the payments get larger from there, until they “max out” at 70. So, if you had planned to retire at 62 but instead retired in stages, you could possibly afford to delay taking Social Security until your checks were bigger. You could work and receive Social Security, but if your earnings exceed a cer-tain amount, some of your benefits may be withheld, at least until you reach full retirement age – after which you can earn as much as you want with no withholding of benefits. However, your Social Security could still be taxed based on your income.

Required Minimum Distributions – During your working years, you may well have contributed to tax-deferred retire-ment accounts, such as a traditional IRA and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. But once you turn 70½, you must start
