Swinger of the Month – GOLF that is!By Bev [email protected]

It began as a Father’s Daygift about 25 years ago whenSharon Bright, then living inMarkham, Ontario, took amere 250 mile ride back to herchildhood farm in Harrow,ON. There, for her dad, shepainted in watercolor, the oldfamily mailbox, completewith their “McLean” name. Others, of course, saw it andwanted one, so she would paint the same thing for each ofthem, but with their family name, over and over, until herneighbor and friend, Bill Sanham stepped in. He, of course, owned a large printing company and turned her originalworks, which eventually included about 15 assorted scenes, into fine art lithograph prints to then be personalized. This,of course, increased business 100 fold and led her and goodfriend, Heather, Bill’s wife and master of administrativedetails, to opening “Unique Signature Prints,” sellingSharon’s personalized watercolor and acrylic prints to privateindividuals and organizations. This, of course, led to largepublic companies such as General Motors, Ford, Pillsbury(and the list goes on) commissioning her to create originalpaintings with their logos, and then to convert them tolithograph prints by the thousands, for them to distribute asgifts. All of this, OF COURSE, took a lot of hard work fromthis incredible woman who, by the way, was “only” a “C”student in art during her high school days! As the sayinggoes, “You’ve come a long way, Baby!”

Retiring around the same time in 2007, Sharon and herhusband, Tony (whom she met on the squash court), enjoypermanent US residency and their life at Heritage Palms.“What’s not to like? It’s all so pristine. I still think we’re inFantasy Land!” is how she describes it. Their two sons andtwo daughters have each blessed them with twograndchildren, their “eight greatest treasures,” who comefrom Canada to visit Nana and Papa whenever possible.Listening to their friends, Helen and Richard Simpson, raveabout Heritage Palms, they first purchased a Brookside condoin 2005, sight unseen through a local realtor’s online virtual

tour. Then as theirgrandchildren grew innumber, so did their livingspace – first to a Dogwood, then an Abby, and finally totheir single family home.Summers still take them toHuntsville, Ontario, wherethey enjoy their cabin in thewoods.

Sharon’s love for golfbegan about 15 years ago, when she finally had a littlemore time for herself and thegame. Today, carrying a 21handicap, she plays aboutthree days a week, includingWednesday’s Ladies’ Day,Friday’s “Chicks withSticks,” and occasionallySunday’s mixer with Tony.Working on her 3-wooduntil it “came around,” it’snow her favorite club. “If Iput my cheeks into it, itgoes!” She loves bothcourses for oppositereasons: the challenge ofSabal with its “AmenCorner” and the friendliness of Royal with her HOLE-IN-ONE on #14, in April, 2010. She aced it with the “Intech”golf ball that Fred Cox left on her doorstep the day before to“give it a try.” Nice try I’d say!

Besides playing at Heritage Palms, Sharon enjoys ourlocal reciprocal courses and taking her game a “wee bit”further away. This past September, smack-dab betweenHurricane Katia and the Solheim Cup, she and five friendsfrom Ontario took a girls’ trip to the Killarney area ofsouthwest Ireland for six days of golf at six different courses. It was at Ballybunion Golf Club, where NO golf carts areallowed, that the hurricane’s aftermath – 45 mph winds andsheets of rain – accompanied them (and their caddies) around

all 18 holes. And for their next five rounds, the same weatherprevailed but never dampened their spirits. GeraldineRosney, owner of the small hotel where they stayed, challenged the girls to a mini 18 hole Irish/Canadian SolheimCup match at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, home of the2010 and 2011 Irish Open, where she and five friends weremembers. Still braving the horrific winds and rain, the scorewas tied on the very last hole, (in individual match play),until the very...last...putt, when the Irish claimed victory. And although losing by that one little point, Sharon and teammates felt like winners and were overwhelmed when theirnew friends wined, dined, and showered them with giftsincluding shamrock pins and beautiful black and red golftowels with the Club’s logo.

Wherever and whenever Sharon plays, she has the sameoutlook on golf. “Don’t have any negative thoughts whenapproaching the ball,” and, “It’s just a game. If you don’thave that attitude, there are better things to do.” Hmmmm, try as I might, I can’t think of any…

Sharon, ready to hit herfavorite 3-wood

The Head GameBy Andy [email protected]

The legendary golfer, BobbyJones said, “Competitive golf isplayed mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course...the space betweenyour ears.” Implied in Mr. Jones’statement is that what you arethinking impacts your ability toplay. I agree and would add that I am of the school of thoughtthat believes that changing your thinking results in a changein feelings. So becoming more aware of what you think asyou play is helpful.

Here are several examples. You are on the first tee withyour foursome and it is your turn to hit. Suddenly, you feelan increased level of anxiety but, you can’t pinpoint thereason so you try to ignore it but, it doesn’t leave and youswing. Another scenario is that you see others watching youand you say to yourself “What will others think of me if I hitit out of bounds? Following these thoughts your anxiety levelincreases and then you swing.

We must become aware of what we are thinking andfeeling in the moment and work to change our thoughts toproduce a more positive outcome. Note that I did not say, work to change your feelings. That’s because we cannot ridourselves of our feelings by trying to self talk out of havingthem. There is an expressions that says “have your feelingsor they will have you.”

What you can do is to accept feelings of anxiety as normalbut, persist and execute despite those feelings. Or as I like tosay, your feelings are the passengers on the bus; however,we don’t want them to drive.

Managing our thoughts and feelings while we play is achallenge that requires practice in becoming more self awareof the thoughts that generate feelings. Next time you play around, check in with yourself at various times and ask “whatam I thinking and feeling in this moment as I get ready to hitthis shot.” When the round is over, use recall to record thosethoughts and feelings. Then, look for patterns of negativeself talk, “fearful thinking,” and any other patterns of thinkingthat lead to anxiety. We will discuss these causes in futurecolumns.

In summary, my tip for you is to never try to directly ridyourself of anxiety; you won’t be able to. As I used to tellmy daughter before big soccer games-“don’t try to get ridof the butterflies, just make them fly in formation.”

Golf CourseOperationsBy Greg KrieschDirector ofGolf Course [email protected]

Typically February is one ofthe colder months of the year inour area. Cooler temperaturesresult in lower soil temperatureswhere southern turfgrass eitherslows or stops growing completely. The bermudagrass wehave on the courses stops growing when soil temperaturesdrop below 65 degrees. This happens when air temperaturesreach the middle 40’s. It takes several days of warm weatherfor soil temperatures to increase where the grass will beginto actively grow. Many of us forget about this since weatherin Southwest Florida can be 32 degrees one day and above80 degrees a couple of days later. I have often been askedwhy the turf looks so brown and worn. I usually answer“don’t you remember that cold weather with frost we hadlast week?” It doesn’t take long to forget the cold weatherwe experience at times when we live in paradise. Believe itor not we do experience dormant conditions at times wherethe grass stops growing.

There are several practices we can all follow that willhelp our golf courses get through these tough times. Firstmake sure to repair ball marks on greens and fill yourdivots with sand. When filling divots, apply sand until thevoid you left is level and not mounding with sand. Excessivesand will cause damage to the cutting units on the mowers, dulling the blades as they pass through the sand. Specialattention should be made when traveling the courses in agolf cart. I have been asked many times what type of golfcart rule/practice I would like to see. Do I prefer 90 degreerule, drive in fairways and stay out of roughs, or drive inroughs and stay out of the fairways? My answer is simple:Scatter! Pay attention when you travel the courses and avoidworn areas of turf. Often we observe group after groupentering and exiting the fairway at the same location. Alsomake sure to keep all 4 wheels on the path when parkingat tees and greens & park in the middle of the cart path,so riders can exit onto the cart path and not on the grass. Byfollowing these simple practices and utilizing common sense,we can all do our part in keeping the courses in goodcondition for all to enjoy.

Scientific Wellness TrendsWhat do you know about antioxidants? As I watch the volumes of commercials, infomercials, etc. on TV, one of the most widelyused (or misused?) words I hear is “antioxidants.” We know they’re good for us, butwhat the heck are they and why should we consume foods or supplements rich in them?

In a nutshell, antioxidants gobble up the bad guys in our bodies that are key in the agingand disease process. Just as the paint on your car will dull and breakdown (oxidize) if leftout in the elements and not protected, that’s what happens to our bodies.

Below is an excerpt from a Houston Chronicle article on a ground breaking study thatwas recently published in Radiation Research. Why is radiation important in an antioxidantconversation? Because radiation causes oxidation in our bodies. There is industrialradiation, radiation emitted from medical and office equipment, the sun and cell phones. It’s a long list of sources. Limiting exposure is great, but can the effects of radiationand oxidation be reversed? New science says the answer is yes! Read on......

HOUSTON, TX: May 25, 2011University of Pittsburgh animal study published in theRadiation Research Journal showed diet of nutritionalsupplement developed for Astronauts strong againsteffects of radiation exposure.

A study commissioned by NASA and the JohnsonSpace Center (JSC) evidencing the benefits of nutritionalsupplementation under the harshest of environmentaloxidative stress factors, radiation, will be published in theJune edition of the Radiation Research Journal. Universityof Pittsburgh labs conducted the study which showed thatthe antioxidative properties of nutritional supplementformulas co-developed by NASA/JSC and Houston-basedAmeriSciences, LP, for the astronaut corps increased thelifespan and lessened the negative health effects inconditionally surviving animal subjects who were givena lethal dose of radiation.

Using a combination of a multivitamin and antioxidantformula (known as the AmeriSciences/NASA PremiumMultivitamin and the AmeriSciences/NASA Fruit andVeggie Antioxidant Formulas), this study was designedto test the long-term survivability and effects in micesubjects given high doses of ionizing radiation (9500mGy). The groups supplemented with a diet of themultivitamin and antioxidant formulas who survived for30 days or longer after exposure had an 80% survival rateat 250 days compared to 30% for the control group aswell as lessened late effects of the radiation exposure.

“The significance of the University of Pittsburghoutcomes cannot be understated,” explains CarlosMontesinos, AmeriSciences Director of Scientific andRegulatory Affairs. “This study proves the effectivenessof a properly formulated antioxidant and multivitaminnutritional supplement in protecting the body fromenvironmental conditions that contribute to negative healthconditions and early aging,” adds Montesinos, “everyonecan benefit from the knowledge of results like this.”

“Every day we are subject to environmental factorssuch as radiation that are considered oxidative stressorsthat can damage our cells,” states Barry Cocheu, President/CEO of AmeriSciences. “This has been linked to suchphysical conditions as cataracts, cancer, cardiovasculardisease and cognitive impairment – accordingly we allneed to consider the possible benefits of adding the rightnutritional supplement to our daily regimen.”

The outcomes of this study are yet another successstory in a line of nutritional technology advancements born

from the research partnership between NASA/JSC andAmeriSciences started six years ago with the signing of aSpace Act Agreement. In 2005, AmeriSciences andNASA/JSC entered into a Space Act Agreement to developnutritional supplements for the astronauts to meet the needsof long-duration spaceflight as well as conditioning hereon Earth. This joint research has now progressed to in-flight and clinical testing to determine the safety andeffectiveness of the resulting formulations. In 2009, theresulting AmeriSciences/NASA formulas were used andtested aboard the Space Shuttle and International SpaceStation (STS-125 and STS-127) with positive results.Human subject clinical testing of the formulas is currentlyin progress and plans are underway for future long-termtesting aboard the International Space Station.

AmeriSciences currently markets civilian formulasbased in part on this research and clinical data. They aremarketed as AS10 Life, AS10 and AS10 Fusion, availableat Good2Go Healthy Take Out in Ft. Myers, FL. For moreinformation go to FaceBook.com/Good2GoHealthy TakeOut. For more information on the radiation study, go to:http://www.radiationstudy.com/common/events/radiationstudy.pdf.
