NHS ACTIVITIES

• Beggars’ Night Food Drive for FISH

• Daily tutoring before school

• Father/Daughter Dance

• Various service projects upon request

• NHS social activities (May picnic)

• New Member Induction in April

NHS MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES• Mandatory: monthly meetings, tutoring, Beggars’ Night,

Father/Daughter Dance, Induction• Service hours: Average 5 hrs./mo. April -May • Individual Service Project• Provide information to prospective new members• Read emails regularly• Uphold the standards of NHS in and out of school

APPLICATION PROCESS1. Eligible -- 3.6 GPA by the end of first semester

2. Hand submit paper applications to Mrs. Hermane (2048) or Mrs. Miller (2057) no later than 3:15 PM (due date will be announced later)

3. Staff surveyed

4. Faculty council meets to approve applicants• Each section awarded points on a scale, all points are totaled and

must average to at least 4.0

5. All applicants notified of acceptance status

6. NHS Induction on Thursday, April 10 @ 7:00 PM

COMPONENTS OF THE PAPER APPLICATION1. Cover Page

• Full name, complete address, phone number and email address, current English teacher and room number, homeroom number, your signature in the bottom right corner

2. Leadership

• List leadership positions in extra and co-curricular activities in a chart

3. Extra and Co-Curricular Activities

• List all other activities and work experience

PAPER APPLICATION CONTINUED4. Community Service

• List service, name of organization, hours, dates completed, brief detailed description

• Total number of service hours

• Include letters from sponsors with sponsors’ contact information

5. List of classroom teachers, advisors, and coaches

• Include all teachers

• If you did not attend BHS since freshman year, please note semester and year enrolled

6. Consideration for officer position (optional)

• Please proofread your application as applications with errors will be immediately dismissed

• Significant element determining selection for membership

SERVICE REQUIREMENTS• Hours from the summer before freshman year to present

• 60 preferred (average 20/year)

• Outside the school day

• Compensation is not received by individual or organization

• Examples of acceptable service

• Civic groups

• Some school-related activities (those not directly related to an academic class, required by an activity, or that raises funds for the activity)

• Church group

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING AN OFFICER?• 400 word essay• MLA format• Explain what you would provide to NHS as a leader

• Incorporate pillars of Scholarship, Service, and Character when defending your position

• May address one position • Descriptions on the NHS webpage under Extra-curricular

• President, Vice President, Secretary, and Historian• Interviewing acceptable candidates and making the final decisions • 2013-2014 NHS officers will be announced at Induction

TIPS• Show us you are a problem solver, resourceful, and a critical

thinker

• Read the application carefully and follow directions• Relax and do not over think the application

• Show us you are responsible and independent

• Show leadership by taking an initiative to ask questions if you have any

• Prepare your application in advance, do not wait until the night before it is due

WHAT IF I DON’T GET ACCEPTED INTO NHS?

• You will still be able to get into colleges and win scholarships

• Think about ways to improve your resume

• Become involved in more service opportunities

• Look for ways to be a leader

• Build your character

• Learn from past experiences!
