Beaver Electives (Electivas en Beaver)

Dear Parents and Students, Our mission at Beaver Technology Center is to provide an interactive learning environment where learning is enriched through real­world experiences using the latest technology and unique resources so that all students are successful builders of their own futures. We are excited to announce the kickoff of our College and Career Readiness Elective Program which supports this mission by providing students with unique extracurricular opportunities. The purpose of this program is to support 21st century skills which require student to work with others, create, and solve real­world problems. Electives will provide students opportunities to explore new areas of interest or to study a particular area in depth. This program offers courses in the following disciplines: basic engineering, computer science, science studies, multimedia, and interdisciplinary studies. Electives have been designed to include all grade levels and multiple topics. Electives will take place on Friday mornings, from 8:00­9:00, and each elective will last approximately 8 weeks. Students will have an opportunity to sign­up for a different elective during the second registration period in January. The registration window opens on November 7 and closes on November 11. Electives will officially begin on Friday, November 14. Students will be able to register with our online registration form which is accessible through our school website. Electives will be capped to maintain optimum facilitator­student ratios, but we will do our best to honor first, second, or third choices. A lottery system will be used when there are more interested students than available seats to determine course rosters. To help us with this initial registration process, please be sure to select three clubs. If you do not have access to the internet at home, the Beaver computer lab is available for registration. The following list is a basic overview of the clubs that will be offered during the first club cycle. More information about club descriptions and what is offered at different grade levels is available in the Beaver Elective Catalog below.

Estimados Padres y Estudiantes, Nuestra misión en el Centro Tecnológico de Beaver es proporcionar un entorno de aprendizaje interactivo en el que el aprendizaje se enriquece a través de las experiencias del mundo real utilizando la última tecnología y recursos únicos de manera que todos los estudiantes son exitosos constructores de su propio futuro. Botany­Primary/Basic (K­2) Facilitators: Ms. Romero & Ms. Espino What did you have for lunch today? Are you ready to work with fruits and vegetables you find in the cafeteria to grow, cook, and harvest! We will grow fruits such as berries, tomatoes, and cantaloupes in the Beaver greenhouse. We will also grow vegetables such parsley, basil, beans, spinach and lettuce. As a Beaver Botanist, you will have the opportunity for hands­on learning, exploration, observation, and experimentation with different types of fruits and vegetables. We’ll visit the Dallas Farmers’ Market and set up our own market. Botanica­ Primaria/Basica (K­2) Facilitadores: Ms. Romero & Ms. Espino ¿Qué comiste hoy? ¿Estas listo para trabajar con frutas y vegetales que encuentres en la cafetería para crecer, cocinar, y cosechar? Vamos a cultivar frutas como moras, tomates, melones en la casa verde de Beaver. As a Beaver Botanist, you’ll have the opportunity for hands­on learning, inquiry, observation, and experimentation with different types of fruits and vegetables. You will learn how to plant, grow, and harvest your own food! We’ll visit the Dallas Farmer’s Market and look for foods that can be used in a variety of dishes and that we can grow in our school greenhouse. When our food is ready to harvest, we’ll hold our own Farmer’s Market where parents and community members can come to purchase the food we’ve grown. Foods we’ll grow ­ potatoes, kale, radishes, strawberries, cabbage, peas, tomatoes, and herbs. Botica­Intermedio/ Avanzado (3­5) Facilitadores: Ms. White & Mrs. Raymond ¿Te has preguntado alguna vez dónde provienen sus alimentos? Computer Science (3rd­5th) Facilitators: Mr. Spurlock This club will provide basic HTML, CSS, and Javascript structures and organization. Introducing kids to code reveals a whole new world and helps them understand how computers influence the world around us. It gives them the ability both to read and to write in the foundational languages of the digital age and, in doing so, fundamentally transforms their perspective from that of user to maker, consumer and creator. Prerequisites: Home computer, willingness to practice outside of club time, good typing skills Ciencias de Computación (3rd ­5th) Facilitador: Mr. Spurlock Este club ofrecerá HTML básico, CSS, y estructuras Javascript. You will use the app, Snapseed to learn composition techniques, crop, adjust color, add captions, and save digital images. Students will keep a digital portfolio of the work they create. Students will also have the opportunity to visit with local professional photographers and learn more about this career field. Paleontology (Dinosaurs 3rd­5th) Facilitators: Ms Ramirez & Mrs. Pelayo Dino Club will be an engaging learning experience to anyone interested in palaeontology. We hope that this course will inspire the next generation of dinosaur researchers, and help excite the imagination of the general population. Students will be able to research different dinosaurs, learn about their habitat, the different time periods, etc. Paleontología (Dinosaurios 3rd­5th) Facilitadores: Ms Ramirez & Mrs. Pelayo Dino Club será una experiencia de aprendizaje para todos los interesados en la paleontología. Esperamos que este curso inspire a la próxima generación de investigadores de dinosaurios, y ayudar a emocionar la imaginación de la población general. Do you like to use technology? Are you interested in different cultures? Do you want to explore other countries? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, this is the course for you. We will use iPad apps and websites to learn geography themes and virtually travel around the world. We will create travel brochures/infographics; explore the Wonders of the World; discuss careers world­wide as well as careers in geography; and use GPS/geography skills to do a school­wide scavenger hunt. We will also compete in our own Beaver Geography Bee. This course inspires students to form ideas for new inventions that can be used to solve real world problems. Students are given a choice of 3­4 problems. They pick one problem that they want to create an invention that will enrich the lives of others. The top three winners will showcase inventions on the announcements. In the Journalism course, you will create a school newspaper that is run entirely by Beaver students. You will come up with ideas, conduct interviews, write the articles, and take the photographs. You will learn everything there is to know about the journalism process from planning articles to writing stories and artwork, to publishing the paper. You will participate in the editing/publishing process, developing new skills, and mastering old ones. Periodismo (K­3rd) Facilitadores: Mrs. Castilleja, Ms. Smith & Ms. Young

After completing the suggested structure, students will collaborate and create a more complex structures to meet a given challenge. Teams will build motorized models made of LEGO elements and will apply their knowledge of simple machines to create brief videos explaining the process. Students will use basic tech tools and software to create videos, iBooks, and music. For the final project, students will create a comprehensive iMovie that will showcase all they have learned. Gamers will learn how to collaborate, become problem solvers, and manage resources through the game. Minecraft sparks creativity while engaging students in STEM education. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, expert, master, pro...join us! MineCraft (2­5) Facilitadores: Mrs. Ariza and the University of Texas at Dallas ¿Piensas que Minecraft es sólo un juego de video? Piénsalo otra vez. Crea, explora y pon tus habilidades de resolución de problemas al diseñar niveles con Minecraft. Public Art Projects (4th­5th) Facilitators: Mrs. Calkin & Ms. Nambo Design! Build 3­D Sculptures! Paint Murals! Create! Students will work together in teams to design and create large scale, colorful art works to be displayed in the public areas of our school. We will also explore the many different types of artists as we invite professionals to come and share their artworks, their ideas and their inspirations with us. Come be a part of this team as we collaborate and create artworks for all to enjoy now and for years to come. Proyecto de Artes Públicas (4th­5th) Facilitadores: Mrs. Calkin & Ms. Nambo A diseñar! From fractions and percentages to predicting game strategies based purely off the mathematical and scientific aspect of sports. Students will use formulas and inference­based decisions to predict probabilities, frequency distributions, graphs, and correlating game­changing skills. Once you receive your challenge, you will work with your team to solve a problem. In your challenge, you will research and devise a plan, draw/sketch your model on paper, build your model digitally using an engineering program Google SketchUp, build your prototype, and finally you will test your model. STEAMotivacion(4th­5th) Facilitadores: Mrs. Waldie­Marston ¿Disfrutaste el desafío STEM el año pasado? ¡Bienvenido a STEAM! Es sinónimo de ciencia, la ingeniería, el arte y matemáticas. En esta electiva, usted tendrá la oportunidad de Skype y entrevistar a un ingeniero que le dará una visión de todo el proceso de ingeniería y diseño. Most importantly, students will gain an appreciation and understanding for our friends around the world and envision a possible future in these foreign lands!
