MY BEAVER FAMILY!!Last quarter's Beaver Tales I wrote to you and said, “I was not a joiner” and then I went on to say, “now I find myself your club President.” You may have thought this guy John hit his head on his slide-out. No need to feel ashamed, my wife Kathi has said that very thing to me on several occasions. Even now, I fear it may be said again at any moment.

After reading what I wrote in the Beaver Tales, I asked myself “Have I changed that much?” I don’t feel like it. Many things in my life have had an impact: school, Army, job, and certainly my fam-ily had a huge impact on my life. But, after retirement I thought I had it all sorted out. I figured there was nothing else but Fun, Fun.

A little while back, I was driving to the me-morial service of one of our Beaver friends. During the solitude of that drive, it came to me. I have changed, I have a new family. My new family did not have a start date, like when your first child is born, or when I got my first real paycheck (not the Army pay). My new family developed over the past 14 years by occasionally bumping into my vari ous Beaver friends. Yes Definitely!!

I HAVE A BEAVER FAMILY…

Of course, my wife and kids and GKs will always be first in my life. However, we know that our kids have their own lives and friends. The GKs will have an even more different one, and they all need their space and freedom. Over the years, most of the other people - job, school, Army - have all drifted away and we talk less every year. On the other hand, I see my new Beaver friends more often, and we always seem to have a good time when we get together. It seems that every year I grow closer to My Beaver Family. That makes me happy. Making my Beaver Family larger makes me happy too.

If you don’t think you have a Beaver Family, it may be that you haven’t met them yet. We all have a similar interest sitting in the driveway; it is a diesel coach. You may not hit it off with every Bea-ver you meet, but with 900 Beaver coaches in our club you will find many that you really have a lot in common with. Look through the rest of this Beaver Tales and see if there is a small rally or gathering near you and give it a try. Better still, call or email your regional VP. He or she may be the first new member of Your Beaver Family.

Hello Beaver Family Members,Happy Spring! I can’t believe I am writing our Spring Issue of the Beaver Tales in January. The

last few months flew by and, with the holiday season be-hind us, we welcome 2019 with open arms to bring in the new year filled with lots of fun, joy, friendship and travel to our favorite rallies (listed within) or to your fa-vorite destination within this beautiful country of ours!

Welcome to our new family members who joined the last 3 months. We hope you are enjoying your journey thus far! I know some of you are attending your first or second rallies, and we are pleased to hear you are get-ting your feet wet! I would like to recognize Glenda Farris for her help with our 2019 Membership Directory. Kudos goes to Glenda for rearranging the information, printing and binding the directories. Dean and I drove over to their house to help and everyone was busy with their assigned tasks preparing for stuffing and mailing. What a big job this was to say the least! Thank you Tim Bentley, for your hard work putting our directories together in the past! Your volunteer efforts are greatly appreciated!

Present family membership count is 850 as of this writ-ing. New family memberships from November to January are down 25 from last quarter, with 54. We experienced a heavy loss of 201 due to BAC and FMCA non-renewals, health reasons, sold coaches, and other reasons during 2018; however, we gained 159 family memberships in 2018. Let’s do our part to recruit more new members. If you see another Beaver coach at the same RV park or at a rest stop, start a conversation about our club. We have tri-fold brochures and door hangers available, so please let me know if you need some and I will be happy to mail them to you. These items are included in new fam-ily member’s welcome packets, so hopefully they will do their part as well. If we maintain our present count and start adding more family memberships, we will be in good shape during 2019. I have found new family members joining the club are purchasing older Beavers because they love the woodwork and are more afford-able to them.

If you have any changes to make to your records - new email addresses, temporary or permanent address, phone and/or cell phone numbers, coach changes, etc., please use our website, beaveramb.org to do so. Go to the top tab of the home page and click on Member Ser-vices, and you will find Update Member Information. It is very cumbersome to be inundated by emails in my in-

box during notification of Beaver Tales and Membership Directory. I would really appreciate it if you use this site to make these changes. Thank you in advance!

You will find an interesting article in the Members’ Cor-ner (page 7) from a prospective member from Holland by the name of Bas Hopmans. He plans to join the club after he acquires his dream Beaver. If anyone is inter-ested in writing an article for future Beaver Tales, please send to Diana Bentley, [email protected], and she will be happy to publish it for you.

I would like to go over how reinstatements are pro-cessed. If you pay your dues within 3 months of the due date, your due date will remain the same. However, if you pay your dues more than 3 months late, your due date will change to the month processed and you will be listed as new members in Beaver Tales with a rein-statement indicator. If you find yourself in this situa-tion, please fill out the new member application on our website ( beaveramb.org) and click on Member Services, Join BAC, then BAC on-line and fill out another applica-tion with dues payment of $40.00. To avoid this, please be sure you renew your membership on time and don’t procrastinate. The Treasurer sends out 3 notices remind-ing you of your dues, so please comply. If you are letting your dues lapse, it would help us if you would please in-dicate why you are not renewing. For those who are past due with FMCA, they send out 2 no-tices, then a phone call is made. This is a friendly reminder that you need to be in good standing with FMCA to belong to BAC, so I’d appreciate it if you would please comply.

On a personal note, we finally sold our home in Renton, WA. We are so relieved this ordeal is behind us, as we are now considered “houseless!” We have joined the full time elite group of folks traveling in our “home on wheels.” It is the greatest and we love it so far! Thank you to those who have shared their experiences with us of the ins and outs of going full time! We have been full time since July of last year, and we are looking forward to traveling a lot more to see other parts of our beautiful country. We have a lot here at Happy Trails in Surprise, AZ during the winter months, and enjoy all the activities here as well as our fun Beaver monthly potlucks!

Until next time, live and enjoy life to the fullest, safe trav-els to your next destination, and hope to see you down the road at one of our fun rallies we have in store for you!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Warm Regards,Anita

Member's CornerPlease let me introduce myself, my name is Bas Hopmans and I live in Holland. For over 10 years I've had a dream to own a big camping vehicle. I got married, and we now have three wonderful kids. I discussed this dream with my wife some time ago and to my surprise she was very enthusiastic!

So as a side project, I was scanning every possible US RV website to find a used RV. The plan was to ship it to Europe. Due to regulations in my coun-try, diesel is no-go, so I restricted my search to gas, preferably a 454 Engine because in Europe parts are available for them. Also, the age of the RV was im-portant, because taxes on a newer RV in my country are astronomical. So, it had to be an '85 '86 or '87.

After reading a lot on US RVs my conclusion was that, given the age restriction, the Beaver coaches are one of the (if not the) best brand - well built, good to maintain, etc.

Then a Beaver popped up in Arizona, and I con-tacted the owner. A nice guy, who became a friend. He had an '85 36ft Beaver Riviera with tag axle for sale, it had the new '86 European look (That's what it said in the brochure at the time. They were right, and still are!) We video chatted and exchanged in-formation. Yes, the paint was a bit worn, but no rust and everything worked. So, I bought it.

I then arranged land transport to Galveston, TX, 1300 miles away. And booked a boat to Europe. All good so far. I now owned a genuine Beaver coach. Wow! My family and I felt very happy.

The land transport I booked on a popular US trans-port website. Unfortunately, the first pickup time was missed by the transporter, so I had to book a new freight slot at Galveston port. Very stressful. If I only knew what was coming. . . Second attempt, the previous owner did some maintenance on the RV for me, as he noticed that the starter and battery were bad. He did it for free! Wow, what a guy!

Then, the RV driver picked it up and drove off.

After 600 miles, the alternator broke. I agreed with the driver that I would cover breakage dur-ing the trip. Since this is an old RV, it seemed to make perfect sense for me. So I paid the $400 and the trip continued. I also asked the guy who in-stalled it what the RV engine was like. He said it

was in great condition, ran smooth. He also told

the driver to take it easy, and not stress the old gal too much.

So, the trip continued... then it happened. It was in the middle of the night over here, we were all asleep. I got a message from the driver that the RV was overheating.... and 20 minutes later I got one that said I should call immediately and that the RV was on fire.

So, in the morning I read those messages, I also got a picture of the RV on fire... I cried. It was totally burned to the ground. So, it didn’t make it to the port.

I just couldn’t/still can't believe it. In our heads we were planning all sorts of trips with the kids, and things we should do to it.

I asked the driver about this being covered by insur-ance, he said no. . . because we agreed that I would pay for breakage along the way. I contacted the pre-vious owner. He said insurance is obligated by law. I asked the guy for his insurance company so I could file a claim, so far he is reluctant to do so.

Yes, this is a cry for help, I’m sorry. Is there anything I can do now? I spent half my savings on this. If it were possible to get back some of the investment that would help us recover from this, we could start searching for another Beaver.

One thing is for sure now, after the initial blow we got from this, that we won't give up on our dream.

Thank you for reading this.Bas Hopmans

I received his email last year and got his permission to publish it in Beaver Tales. He found another Beaver in OR on consignment and we helped him by asking a Bea-ver friend to check it out before Bas and his father make a trip to the States. I believe they are still negotiating on a price. Dean has been in touch with him, but this is the latest. We hope to hear more after he purchases his 1987 Beaver. If you would like to get in touch with him via email after reading this article, please let me know. He would like to hear from some of you Beaver owners who own a 1987 to share your experiences with him.

(Ed. Note: I wonder if Bas has heard of "Go Fund Me." I bet some Beaver friends would like to help out.)

Happy New Year to all you fellow Bea-vers out there! I hope you all had a great Christmas and here’s to a

healthy and safe 2019. Safe travels as you head down the road to the next rally.

Is it summer yet? I’d even settle for spring at this point. I can’t complain too much as we are in Ari-zona at Happy Trails with a lot of other Beaver folks rather than being in Washington where they had a terrible wind and storm recently that knocked out power to many thousands of homes. It’s been a cold winter here in Arizona so far but at least the sun is out most of the time.

I’d like to take an opportunity here to welcome the new members we have who joined our club in the last quarter. We are glad you joined us and look forward to seeing you on the road or at a rally soon!

Speaking of rallies, there are some great ones on the schedule for this coming year. There is a region 2 Super rally in Las Vegas at the end of April. What better place than Las Vegas to have a rally? Bob & Pam Blair have a great rally planned and there will be 50 coaches attend-ing, but still, be sure and get your coupon in the mail to reserve your spot.

We are planning another rally in Anacortes for our region in July. This will be a ‘do nothing’ rally. Basically, the cost of the rally will be the camp-ing fees alone. We may have a potluck or two but there is so much to do around the area that you will be free to choose. Golf, biking, whale watching cruises, a ferry to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, or just relax and ‘do nothing!' Look for the ad in this issue and get the coupon mailed right away as this will fill up fast and it is limited to 11 coaches. Anacortes is a great place to explore, and the Fidalgo Bay RV Resort is very nice and welcoming to Beavers; our last rally there was a great success. The ‘Do Nothing’ con-cept will keep the rally costs down and there is so much to do around the area that you won’t be bored.

This is a recruitment pitch - we need a Director under incoming Region 1 VP Allen Hughes for the 2019-2021 term. This will be a lead in to the

VP position for the 2021-2023 term. This is a great way to get involved in your club and play a part in the direction the club takes going forward. We are working toward getting some reimburse-ment for travel expenses to attend International rallies for VPs, or directors if a VP cannot attend. If you or anyone you know would like to get in-volved, please let me or Allen Hughes know. This term would start in October of this year. The Di-rector’s position is mainly as a backup to the VP and to attend rallies if the VP cannot attend. The director has a seat on the board but not as a vot-ing member unless the VP is not in attendance.

The International rally for 2019 is in Branson (One More Time) again and there are a couple of rolling rallies that are headed that way. We’ve never been to Branson and now that we are full time, as our house has sold, we look forward to exploring more of the country. We will be hav-ing one of the 2020 International rallies in our region. The location yet to be decided, but it will be in Central Oregon somewhere. Stay tuned for that.

If you have an idea for a rally, let us know. We would love to hear your ideas and would even help to organize it with you. Rallies are at the core of our existence as a club and we are com-ing up on the season in our region where the weather will be much more accommodating to outdoor activities and RV camping. Share your travel adventures with us and let’s see if we can get some rallies lined up for our region for this coming summer.

Until next time, keep the shiny side up and safe travels

Mike Randolph TributeAt the Farmington International Rally, BAC did a special rememberance award for long time BAC member, Mike Randolph. A nice plaque was presented and many BAC members wrote notes to the Randolph family. Jerry Pattison hand delivered the notes and plaque to Prudy and her daughter in Las Vagas. They responded to the Beaver thoughtfulness with the following message.

What a wonderful gesture by the BAC. We thank you very much for honoring my Dad with the beautiful plaque. Thank you also for the beautiful letters from the Beaver members! I showed the plaque and letters to Mom immediately upon getting them, and Mom and I thoroughly enjoyed them! We were both touched and the plaque sits where we can see it in the home. The special cleaning instructions are carefully taped to the bottom so that we can keep great care of this wonder-ful remembrance. Thank you again, and please pass on to the letter writers and the Beavers our gratitude.

Best wishes, Melanie and Prudy Randolph.

Splendide Washer/Dryer HintsWant to get the best results from your RV washer/dryer? Wrinkled clothes are one of our main prob-lems. The basic permanent press express wash cycle is one of the most used cycles to help elimi-nate wrinkles. When combined with the low-spin option, clothes are less likely to wrinkle. If you use high-spin, the drum can spin so fast, the clothes can be smashed up against the side of the drum wall and, especially in pants and jeans, wrinkles are "pressed" in. When washing pants and jeans, it is best to remove the clothes after the wash cy-cle and give them a good shake before returning the items to the drum for the drying cycle.

Another secret to avoiding wrinkles is to use liquid fabric softener; and the "As Seen on TV" dryer-balls really do work! The manufacturer advises against using dryer sheets in the vented units, feeling the dryer sheet may be sucked into the ex-haust vent and become a fire hazard, so use liquid fabric softeners and/or dryer-balls.

Another secret in the Splendide model: after drying the clothes for a while, turn the dryer tim-er to zero. The unit will continue to tumble, with no heat. This is useful for drying delicate items or "fluffing" items.

Hello Fellow Beavers,

Here we go again. Start of a new year. Hope 2019 brings you and yours happiness, good fortune and good health. A lotto win would help a little too. Our New Year started quietly with cel-ebration at around nine o’clock California time, timed for the ball drop in New York. Like many others, Carol and I can’t seem to make it to mid-night anymore. Up early on New Year’s Day to watch the Rose Bowl Parade which brought back fond memories of last year’s Beaver Rally and the fantastic seats we had. Sportscoach Owners In-ternational (SOI) has been doing this rally for the last 38+ years and hopefully, someone will plan another Beaver rally in conjunction with that group in the future. You won’t be disappointed, and the money spent will be worth every penny.

This year Carol and I were both well, unlike last year, so we were able to attend the Beaver Secu-rity Rally in conjunction with FMCA Western Area rally in Indio. If you have not done this ral-ly, you have missed out on Maine Lobster and an exceptionally good time. We guarded gates and watched all the people walking by, kind of like be-ing at a County Fair or a WalMart (LOL). Thank you Mandy & Violet for another great rally. Of course, we had to buy some things for the coach and other “stuff ” the vendors were selling. You can never have too much stuff, until the next year when you are cleaning out the coach and wonder why you bought some of that stuff because you haven’t used it for a year.

After the Indio rally, we made our way to Hap-py Trails, where we will be spending the next few months with many of our Beaver friends. We will also do some off-road Jeeping and I will play pickleball. Hopefully I won’t get injured and bloody in the process.

Carol and I will stay in Happy Trails until we make our way to Las Vegas for the “Super Rally” from April 24th to the 28th. Check the Beaver Tales for the ad and if you haven’t already, GET YOUR RESERVATION IN SOON. Hope to see many of you there. This Rally will be a great one hosted by Bob and Pam Blair. If you have been to one of their rallies before you know they do a “Super” job.

If you will be going to the BAC International Ral-ly in Branson, our region will be hosting a Rolling Rally starting in the Reno, Nevada area on August 23rd and rolling into Branson on September 4th. The plan is to follow a northern route along I-80. If you want to travel with BAC friends and have fun along the way, this rally is for you. Look for a detailed ad in this issue of Beaver Tales. There is a limit of ten coaches so get your application in early. After this rolling rally there is only one other rally scheduled in for Region 2 and that is the Christmas Rally in Paso Robles on December 9th to the 13th. Rally Masters for the Christmas Rally are Jeff Lanning and Kathy Lotman with Tom Chase and JoAnn Francis as Co-Rally Mas-ters. Tom enjoyed being co-rally master of the 2018 Christmas rally so much that, after a couple of wee drams of scotch, he raised his hand to vol-unteer for 2019. Thanks Tom. It would be great to have some other rallies scheduled for 2019 and we are accepting volunteers for 2020 and 2021. So if you are interested please contact me. Help and advice are always available.

Shortly after the Branson Rally, I will be ending my tenure as Vice-President of Region 2. I will be leaving you all in good hands as Bob Blair will be taking over. I am sure Bob will serve the Region well, along with his wife Pam, who was previously the club’s secretary. Carol and I will continue to be involved in BAC activities as part of our travels and look forward to visiting more new and dis-tant areas of the country. It has been my pleasure to have been VP for this Region and I encourage you to become involved in the operations of our club. Is VP or Director in your future? You will get great enjoyment from working with those in-volved in our club, and it can be a very rewarding experience.

Safe Travels,Alan

Collect Pull Tabs from Mandy Canales

It doesn't take much to wiggle off the pull tab from any kind of a can and store them until you get to a Beaver rally with someone who collects them. Why should all BAC mem-bers be doing this? Because for each tab collected, Ronald McDonald House (housing for families of sick children) gets credit for a whole can and caring Beavers have probably collected more than a million by now. That's a lot of help for such a simple act.

Most BAC rallies will have someone col-lecting, but if not, bring them (or send with someone going) to Branson

13

Way to Get Involved!!!There are several ways that BAC members can get more involved with the club. The easiest way is to attend rallies. You get to meet people and find out what the club is all about.

There are also sometimes articles in Beaver Tales about a specific need for volunteers with specific talents. And you don't have to be a long time member to help out.

Recently new members, Evana and Wes Gen-dron, followed both of these suggestions. At just their second rally (Indio was first) in Quartzsite, they met up with Tim Bentley, who has been looking for someone capable of tak-ing over the BAC website. Evana, along with her husband Wes, agreed to tackle the job. The website has long been in need of an update and we thank Evana and Wes for stepping up, and we can't wait to see what happens as they de-velop new ideas.

REVENUES (1ST QTR)

My name is Mike Rump and I am honored to serve as your new Treasurer. I would like to thank my prede-cessor, Roy Warren, for his dedicated service and

the detailed and thoughtful turnover. George Morlan and Karl Welhart should also be recognized, as they were very gracious and patient in explaining the financial history of our club. And, my wife, Janis, who is so very appreciative for the clutter that now resides in our coach versus the Warrens'. During this tran-sition, I developed several goals which I want to share with you;

1. Streamline the dues notification, collection, and tracking process2. Utilize Bill Pay on Line (BPOL) and ATM deposits more ef-fectively (in process)3. Update the Beaver Tales financial report format (in process)4. Use Quicken more efficiently a. Transition from accrual to cash accounting b. Eliminate unused accounts c. Include graphics (in process)5. Streamline the budgeting process

Some of these goals are self-explanatory, but I wanted to ex-plain item 4a in more detail. During this year’s tax preparation discussion, our CPA suggested that we change from an accrual to a cash basis accounting system to simplify our records and reports. Currently, assets and liabilities don’t reflect a true net worth because the reserve accounts contain funds that have been set aside for future use. She provided some guidance which is being reviewed, and I will update you as we progress.

Our Fiscal Year (F/Y) is from 1 October thru 30 September the following year. First quarter revenue was high because a ma-jority of our club memberships expire in September and are usually renewed in the first quarter. This coupled with the large number of rallies, produced significant income. Beaver Tales, badges, and rallies dominated the expense side. These numbers should level out as the year progresses. Additionally, $2000 was transferred from the International Rally Reserve for the Las Vegas Super Rally. This slightly distorted the Rally income and expense numbers. Please note that the approved 2018/2019 Budget is projecting a loss of ~ $7000.

Now I need to ask for your help, because ultimately, I want to provide the information you need in a format that makes sense to you, the BAC members. After you review the current Beaver Tales, please look over the revised financial reporting format and send along your thoughts and comments. And, please take note of all the rallies that are scheduled for the year. If you haven’t been to a rally lately, perhaps it is time to give it a go. Especially since we spend most of our money in having great rallies.

And, thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Mike

Hello everyone in Beaverdom, I’m writing today to talk about spring-time while sitting in the south-

western Arizona desert in a balmy 39 de-gree outside temperature.

Patsy and I have wrapped up the “Rocking in Q II” rally in beautiful Quartzsite, Arizona. We had a wonderful time playing RVING (Bingo), Bean Bag Baseball and racing our Beaver steeds. There was a maintenance seminar at Dave's Diesel Diagnostics and a round table discussion with our RV ex-perts. We had six first time rally attendees and signed up two new members. All in all it was a great rally.

Region 3 is looking forward to a great time with nine Beaver rallies in both the US and Canada. There are still openings in some, and the others have waiting lists. Remem-ber there are usually cancellations, so don’t hesitate to get on the waiting list for a rally.

We will be attending the FMCA’s 100th In-ternational rally in Minot, South Dakota. Gary and Glenda Milner, the Midwest Area National VP, visited us at Quartzsite and registered to become new BAC members. Gary expressed to us the need for volun-teers in all areas at Minot. It is a very ex-citing time for our Region 3 members with so many rallies in the north. So take a look at your Beaver Tales, pick out some rallies, and get signed up.

Safe travels to everyone.

It looks like it will be a busy year for Roy and me with the Beavers. Roy has several rallies on schedule that we will be attending in Region 3 and of course I have my commitments as National Director with FMCA.

I am happy to say that the Alternate National Director will attend The 99th International Convention in Perry Georgia. Steve and Sherry Huber have family near there so it was great that he could take the time to represent the Beaver Ambassador Club, and find out anything new and exciting happening with FMCA at this event. Roy and I will be attending the 100th Convention in Minot, North Dakota August 14-17. This will be the first time we have attended an event in North Dakota and are looking forward to it, although we have heard of past challenges and damaged done by the weather. We are hoping for a good experience, and gaining lots of knowledge and information to bring back to the BAC. On December 31, 2018 the ballots for FMCA Constitutional Amendments were tabulated and the results were in favor of the changes by a huge margin. These changes were simply to streamline refunds and electronic voting. Roy and I Rally Mastered the Quartzsite Rally this year, with Pete and Maryalice Willhite and John Nord and Bev Campbell as Co-Rally Masters. We had a great turnout. We originally had 61 coaches, but with flu season being exceptionally bad, and some other illnesses and problem coaches we had 54 expected the day of registration. That afternoon we got word that 3 coaches were out in the desert somewhere and couldn't get to us that day due to an area being washed out. So we had 51 coaches in attendance in the downpour of rain on Tuesday at registration. We had 6 first time BAC rally attendees at Quartzsite. We also signed up two new members for BAC. I want to welcome Jack and Lois Crans and Gary and Glenda Milner to the Club. We are so glad you decided to join our Beaver family. We had lots and lots of rain the first day, but due to the donation of an awning over our serving area we managed to feed 100 people dinner. A big thank you for that donation. Also a big thanks to John Nord for the use of his trailer without which such a downpour would have made this a very difficult if not impossible day. The weather turned beautiful on Wednesday and it was a great rally. I have much appreciation for our cooks and volunteers. Quartzsite is such a unique rally and the volunteers and camaraderie are a special part of the experience of this rally. Remember if you have someone join BAC they must also be a member of FMCA and if you recruit a member for

FMCA you will receive a $10 credit voucher each time. So here is a rundown of benefits FMCA members can take advantage of. Sometimes folks need a reason and FMCA is doing its best to give members plenty of reasons to join.

• FMCAssist. Of course this is included in your membership. What a deal! Remember that FMCAssist must be arranged by Seven Corners in order to be covered. Work with them as you determine a location or event which would attract participants, pick the dates of the rally, and make sure you have a campground able to provide the sites and hook-ups you need for your rally. The VP will check with Carol Scott, the Rally Coordinator, to make sure there are no conflicts with other Beaver rallies.

Next see about providing some meals, although for a less expensive rally, potlucks or no-host restaurants are a good choice. Can you visit some of the highlights in the area? Plan your budget and decide how much you need to charge in rally fees to cover your expenses. Don't forget rally bars. They are $5 each, $10/couple. Now share your final budget with your VP for approval.

As you prepare for the rally, make sure to keep all of your receipts. There will be a financial Rally Report to file at the end of the rally, and you will send the receipts to the treasurer. Sign agreements or contracts with your venues. Re-confirm these several weeks before the event.

Acknowlege receipt of all registrations as they come in.

It's a good idea to photocopy (photograph?) the checks as a record. If you do mobile deposits, you can keep the actual checks stapled to the registration form. Keep a roster with all the usual contact info along with the FMCA number; 1st and 2nd timers marked; and BAC guests identified. If they are guests there will be an additional charge equal to the cost of a first time BAC membership ($40). They may apply this fee to a membership during the rally, if they choose.

2. Beaver Tales Editor - When all is approved, send the your rally information to [email protected]. You don't need to design your ad but your suggestions are welcome.

3. Rally Support Manager - At least a month before the rally, send your roster to the Rally Support Manager, Eileen Cooper. She will have the business mail you your rally bars and the 1st and 2nd timer bolo badges and dress badges. Tell her how many you need and where to send them. Check with your 1st timers and see how they want to have their name listed on their badges. They may have these for many years, so we want to get it right. The rally bars can have 2 lines with 24 total characters on each, so consider this when you name your rally.

4. Final Reports - Fill out your rally report (basically just an income and outgo statement) and send a copy to the President, your VP, and the Treasurer (along with your receipts and a check for the rally bars.) Eileen also keeps track of rally attendees, so when the rally is over, send her the final copy of your roster and any extra rally bars. Highlight any additions or cancellations so she can update her records.

Time sure is flying by! It's hard to believe spring is right around the corner. Since my last update I have been on the move. Rich and I attended the Christmas rally in Paso Robles. It was a very nice rally with lots of fun, food, wine and friends. The sites were beautiful - level and nicely land-scaped. The amenities were outstanding. The clubhouse was the main event. It was gorgeous, with crystal chandeliers, a huge fireplace with a comfy sitting area and a full kitchen. Rick and Laura Stephens, rally masters, and Tom Chase and Jo Ann Francis, co-rally masters, did a great job finding this gem of a park. They also did a fantastic job with their hard work and planning. Everyone had a festive time. Ugly sweaters, pj’s and formal attire was the dress code of the night for a lovely brisket dinner with lots of “fixins.” Paso Robles is so beautiful and the rally was so magical. Turns out the Christmas rally will be held at the same location this December 2019. Kathy Lottman and Jeff Lanning volunteered to be first time rally masters so we can all “Get Lit Again”. So there you have it another rally being planned just like that. We are looking forward to it. Watch the Beaver Tales for all the informa-tion on this rally. It’s easy to do a rally; just vol-unteer. Your regional VP and lots of Beavers are there to help you. The Rally Master Handbook is a good source of information with step by step “How-To’s”. Ask your regional VP or go online for an updated copy. When you see how easy it is, step up and plan a rally. Right now we are looking for a rally master for the Quartzsite rally next year. This is a unique rally and loads of fun. Anyone interested or who knows of someone that should be rally master and doesn’t know it yet . . . contact me.

After the Christmas rally was over, Rich and I left California and traveled to Florida for the winter. We stopped in New Orleans for Christmas on the way. We had lunch at the Beaver gather-ing in Tarpon Springs, Florida with our Region 5 Beaver family. It was great seeing everyone. This quaint little Greek town has the best Greek food and desserts. It is also the location of the Sponge Docks where the boats come in from sponge harvesting out in the gulf. Lots and lots of sponges for sale! We also attended the Tampa RV Super Show. If you have never attend one, you are missing out. It is SUPER . . . 450 vendors, more RVs than you could count, food, entertainment, RV services, and so much more. We went for the day but you need more than that to cover it all.

While we were enjoying Florida, Jo Ann Fran-cis, Director for Region 4, attended the Beaver rally hosted by Mandy and Violet Canales in In-dio at the FMCA rally. Then they went on to the Quartzsite rally hosted by Roy and Patsy Boles. Here are Jo Ann and Tom’s adventures.

“We went to the FMCA Once Upon A Time Security Volunteer Rally in Indio, CA. It was our first time to volunteer and we enjoyed it very much. There were 30 some coaches there. Of course the high-light of the rally, besides meeting and making new friends and seeing old ones, was the lobster dinner. Delicious!

From Indio we traveled to Quartzsite for the Rock-in’ in the “Q” II. There were 53 coaches and lots of newcomers. Great food and the weather cooper-ated somewhat.

This year we’re traveling to Winnipeg and to Minot for the FMCA International Rally. It is the 100th anniversary. We will also be attending rallies in Sturgis, Tripp, Nashville and then on to Branson for our BAC international Rally.

Hope to see you there!” Thank you Jo Ann and Tom for the update. They will also be attending the super rally in Las Ve-gas hosted by Bob and Pam Blair in April.

My rally attendance this summer will be side-lined as I am facing another surgery for a revi-sion on my hip replacement that did not go so well. I will be attending a rally planned by Mar-gie and Chen Vicente here in Florida in March. The Margaritaville Rally is advertised in this edi-tion of the Beaver Tales. If you are in the area be sure to sign up. I will see all of you in Branson at the “One More Time” rally hosted by Lamar Keck and Karen Rogers in September.

This summer there are lots of rallies planned. I encourage you to check out this issue of the Beaver Tales and try to attend at least one. Lots of fun ahead . . . check out 2020 too. There will be many rallies to choose from and lots more in the planning stages. Keep your eye on the Bea-ver Tales.

Check the President’s column for exciting up-dates. I know John and his committees are working hard on necessary changes to the Bea-ver website and the forum. Have a great spring.

Until next time…Safe travels

YOU WANT ME TO DO WHAT?!?. . . PLAN A RALLY??by Carol Scott

That’s a question those of us who have been Rally Masters have asked ourselves before we volun-teered to do our first rally. What’s expected? Where do I start? It's not as hard as you may think.

STEP 1: PICK THE LOCATION & DATE Where do I live? Where have I been? What events or spe-cial activities have I enjoyed and would do again? We have a myriad of answers to these questions. Towns we grew up in or now live in all have some-thing special to offer. It may be a special museum, historical or archaeological site, a national or state park or a special annual event. Are there celebra-tions, events or activities that I have visited pre-viously that I would like my friends to share with me? Do some research on what RV parks might be available in the area you are considering (Google search, Good Sam/KOA/Passport America apps, campgroundreviews.com.)

The date and duration of the rally will be dictated by weather in the location chosen and what events or activities are anticipated. Most rallies are 3 to 4 nights and anywhere between 10 to 25 coaches al-though some rallies (i.e. BAC International, Quartz-site and Security) involve a larger group. A pre-liminary inquiry to the RV parks available would be advised to find out what dates they have available, what accommodations they can provide (full hook-ups, pull thru big rig sites, meeting/kitchen facili-ties). Is there an extra charge for any meeting room or outdoor pavilion? Do they have special rates for groups and what is the total cost per site including any taxes and fees.

Next . . . touch base with your Regional VP AND (if your rally is in a different region) the Regional VP for that region, to discuss the rally plans. That Regional VP will touch base with the BAC Rally Co-ordinator to make sure that there are no conflicts with other rallies. and then will give their approval to proceed with the rally. Now is the time to choose your co-Rally Master so they can assist and be in-volved in all the planning.

STEP 2: GET A COPY OF THE RALLY MASTER HANDBOOK. Download from the BAC website or your Regional VP can provide you with a copy. This handbook will guide you through the entire rally planning process including budgeting, advertis-ing and reporting paperwork. Check Beaver Tales deadlines and send the information about your rally

to the Beaver Tales editor so that it can be pub-lished at least two times before your rally. Don’t let this scare you. The handbook is easy to follow and provides excellent information and tips to make your rally planning as easy as possible.

Your chosen RV park, the Chamber of Commerce and The Internet can provide a wealth of informa-tion to help you find places of interest, restaurants, and tour information. Happy hour and heavy hors d'oeuvres or pizza are always popular the first night as folks have been traveling to the rally and may want a chance to relax. Breakfasts can be continen-tal, or more involved as you wish. Lunches usually are not planned unless included as part of a tour and dinners can be catered or potluck at the RV Park, at a local restaurant, or everyone can be on their own. There is usually a happy hour scheduled each day if activities permit. It all depends on what you want to do. Keep the rally simple. A few phone calls and some brainstorming with your Co-Rally Masters and voila A RALLY IS BORN!

ROLLING RALLIES are those rallies where a group of Beavers travel together, usually to attend an In-ternational Rally. There is a little more involved, in that multiple RV parks are needed, but less enter-tainment and meals are required. The whole point of a rolling rally is to get coaches from Point A to Point B and have some fun in the process.

BAC INTERNATIONAL RALLIES are much more involved, in that we’re dealing with a much larger number of coaches in attendance and the logistics of making everything fit together is much more chal-lenging. These larger venue rallies are better left to seasoned Rally Masters with lots of experience, but feel free to volunteer as a Co-Rally Master to help provide “boots on the ground” assistance.

Your Regional VP and Director can assist you with any questions or issues you are unsure about. Call them, they are there to help you. And let me also emphasize that when Beavers attend a rally, we are a family and everyone is more than willing to help in any way we’re needed.

I encourage you to TAKE THE NEXT STEP and con-sider volunteering as either a Rally Master or Co-Rally Master. It’s an excellent way to get involved and help keep the active and traveling lifestyle we all enjoy alive and well.

A road less traveled means a destination not discovered?

The Beaver world in Region 5 has been very active during our normal-ly dormant season of the year. We

started on the 1st of December, heading toward Titusville, Florida for Jerry and Sue Leonard’s “Come Back to Titusville” rally, December 3-7, 2018. First Timers Mike and Randi Lutz from Niceville, Florida made themselves right at home. Activities in-cluded a great concert performance with the Irish Tenors at the King Arts Center. Visits to a great alligator park and an air-boat ride gave everyone a feel for the true old Florida.

Next on the Beaver agenda was the “St. Au-gustine Christmas” rally, December 7-11, 2018, hosted by Keith and Eileen Cooper at a wonderful campground on the North Beach area of St. Augustine, Florida - truly a beautiful city offering lots of activities dur-ing the Christmas season. St. Augustine is a tremendous place for old world history, including the Lighthouse, Flagler College, Lightener Museum, Fountain of Youth, and the Castillo de San Marcos Fort. The tour of St. Augustine Wild Reserve with the Festival of Lights highlighted the wonder-ful activities during the rally. First Timers Mike and Jennifer Stuart from Jacksonville, Florida enjoyed sharing their experiences.

Keith and Eileen Cooper hosted a “Bea-ver Gathering” January 17, 2019 in Tarpon Springs for lunch during the Tampa Super Show. Thanks to those that attended, and I encourage others to host another “Beaver

Gathering” in their area. In case you are not familiar with a “Beaver Gathering”, it is just a single event for lunch or dinner or a campground get together of Beavers for a single night or several overnights togeth-er. This type of event is not advertised in the Beaver Tales but is spread by word of mouth and posted on the forum. A “Beaver Gathering” is not as formal or structured as an official club rally.

More rallies in Region 5 include “Mermaids & Music,” March 6-11, 2019, hosted by Keith and Eileen Cooper in Brooksville, Florida; “Margaritaville IV,” March 21-25, 2019, hosted by Margie and Chen Vincente in Sanford, Florida at their home; and “Feb-ruary Bluegrass Festival,” February 12- 16, 2020, hosted by Keith and Eileen Cooper in Palatka, Florida.

Do not forget the rolling rally “Music City to Branson,” August 30-September 4, 2019 hosted by Norm and Cynthia Green. It starts in Nashville, Tennessee, traveling to Bran-son, Missouri for our International Rally, “Branson One More Time,” Sept 6-13, 2019, hosted by Lamar Keck and Karen Rogers. Please sign up early for these rallies, space is limited. Plan ahead; our International Rally will be held in Kerrville Texas in April 2020 and Oregon in September 2020. Watch for the ads in the Beaver Tales.

Wishing all our new Region 5 members a warm Beaver welcome to the club. Feel free to contact me if you have any ques-tions, concerns, or comments on any issue. Your input is what makes this club GREAT.

Warmest regards,

Karl

Don't Let Your Engine Fail

Our resident CAT tech, Dave Atherton said that he has seen 7 engine failures this year. Each failure has the potential of costing the owners $45,000 or more (depending on whether they contact Dave before allowing a shop to work on it.) The main thing Dave wants everyone to know is that AMOST ALL OF THESE BREAKDOWNS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED!

A simple oil test, done early enough, can de-tect major changes that can cause catastrophic damage. These tests will show up very specific results if very specific damage is being done in the engine in time to get it corrected. An oil analy-sis should be done at every oil change. This is equivalent to you getting lab tests at your annual physical.

Once you test your oil, you will have a baseline to compare changes. It is important to maintain con-sistency in the test because not all testing sites are the same. Dave has some mailers for Black-stone Oil Analysis or you can request one free at www.blackstone-labs.com if anyone is interested. You will then have a consistent place to send an oil sample and get your test done.

There is more information on this and many other ways to help keep your motorhome running well on the BAC Forum at beaveramb.org/forum. This month some of the problems posted included questions about the Intellitec System, starting batteries, dash air problems, fuel filter choices, shocks, leaky water tanks (and rain leaks too), hydro-hot, overheating engine, light bulb replace-ments, and random Gremlins popping up. Is your question here? Do you have a question? The BAC Forum is free to post for all BAC members.

The Beaver Ambassador Club (BAC), a chapter of Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA), invites those looking for a fun and helpful club, to join our international (United States, Canada and Mexico) motorhome organization. All Beaver coach owners may join. Owners of non-Beaver diesel coaches may join if sponsored by a BAC member. Membership in FMCA must be maintained.

To check out BAC & FMCA before joining, go to beaveramb.org and fmca.com. There you will find specifics about the club, its rallies (including pictures), and helpful links. There is also a link to the Forum, an excellent resource for information about maintaining your coach and enjoying the RV lifestyle.

If a rally has been advertised for 30 days, non-BAC members (Beaver owners or Friends of Beavers, FOBs) may attend any number of rallies without joining the club, with the payment of an additional $40 per rally. For qualifying coaches, this charge may be applied to a year membership in the club by the end of the rally.

BAC Dues: First year, $40 (includes name badges to be given at your first rally.) Dues following first year, $30 annually. IMPORTANT: BAC membership requires current FMCA membership. If you are not currently an FMCA member, please complete the FMCA application on the reverse side. First year FMCA - $60 - Include a check payable to FMCA along with your completed BAC application and a $40 check payable to BAC. The BAC Membership Director will process both applications.

Complimentary Membership: If you buy a "pre-loved" Beaver coach at a dealer, check with them about BAC membership. Some dealerships offer Beaver coach purchasers, who have not been previously registered in BAC, a first year complimentary membership. Applications must be returned to the Mem-bership Director within one year from the date the sale is recorded in order to participate in the complimentary membership package.
