Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Everyday Maths Hub

As part of the NSW Mathematics Strategy, NSW Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell has launched the Maths campaign #MathsTrainsBrains. This campaign aims to improve parents and carers’ engagement with and perceptions of mathematics, and how it is relevant and useful in everyday life.

As part of this campaign, the Department of Education has created the Everyday Maths Hub. This resource aims to support parents and carers to be involved in their children's mathematics learning and to feel more confident in talking with their child about mathematics. Maths is used every day in almost everything we do. It is the foundation of problem-solving and reasoning, and offers so many opportunities for students to work collaboratively and think creatively. This year at Beauty Point Public School, our teachers have been engaged in professional development with the Mathematics Association of NSW to help students make connections between mathematical concepts and to express their mathematical reasoning through number talks.

To help you engage your child in real life connections to mathematics, we encourage you to make the most of the Everyday Maths Hub. The hub features fun, interactive resources and explanations about a wide range of mathematics topics and how they are relevant to everyday life. We hope you enjoy exploring this digital resource with your children.

Sun Safety

As we approach the summer months, it is very important that we all work together to protect our children against exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world but it is also one of the most preventable cancers if we adopt good sun protection habits.

TERM 4 WEEK 6 19 November 2020

A Quality School in a Picturesque and Caring Environment

You can protect your child from the sun by teaching them to become SunSmart and always using sun protection when UV levels are 3 or higher. It is also important to model good sun protection habits, as children learn by observing their parents’ and caregivers’ behaviour. You can check daily UV levels by downloading the SunSmart App at the following links:

Sun Safe Shirt

Thanks to Jennifer Hall and our P&C, a BPPS Sun Safe Shirt will be available as part of the school uniform for 2021! This has been developed over the past 12 months in conjunction with Sun Protection Australia, the P & C, the school Sun Safety Team, and the Student Representative Council.

BPPS is a member of the Cancer Council Australia’s SunSmart Schools Program. In Australia, children’s skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage, which can lead to skin cancer later in life. Cancer Council Australia recommends sun safe clothing as part of school uniforms.

Similar sun safe shirts are available at other schools in Australia and are also worn by professional sports people such as cricketers and surf lifesavers.

The shirt features:

• UPF 50+ fabric providing all day sun protection. The Ultraviolet sun Protection Factor blocks out 98% of damaging UVA and UVB sun rays.

• Lightweight, breathable and durable so can be worn for longer in warmer months • Long sleeves so less time required to re/apply sunscreen • Rapid sweat absorption/moisture wicking • Mesh panels underarms for increased airflow. • Anti-bacterial, anti-stain properties • Easy care & quick drying • Soft/silky texture Australian sourced microfiber • Keeps wearer dry, cool and comfortable

The shirts are not compulsory but are recommended as an additional form of sun protection at school.

Ordering information will sent through next week via ENews and we expect the shirts will be delivered to school for collection on the first day of Term 1.

K-2 - 3-6 Presentation Assemblies

K-2 and 3-6 Presentation Assemblies will be held on Wednesday 9 December. While we had hoped that restrictions would be lifted to allow us to invite parents to these events, the current restrictions state that:

“Schools must comply with the 4 square metre rule for all people participating. Schools will need to invite guests based on the total number of people (this includes staff, parents and carers and visitors) who are able to be accommodated under the 4 square metre rule.”

Page 3: BEAUTY POINT BUZZ

When this condition is applied to our venue (the school hall) it would mean that approximately 20 parents would be able to attend to keep us within the restrictions outlined. Sadly, it would be unfair and very difficult to restrict the attendance to 20 parents and even more difficult to determine just who those parents might be. Therefore, we will be filming both presentation days and sending out a password protected link to the video to all families on Monday 14 December.

A huge thank you to Jennifer Poole and Kerry Butler for assisting us with the filming and editing process. We look to forward to producing a professional presentation for all to enjoy.

Last P&C Meeting for the Year - Monday 23 November at 7pm

On Monday evening, we will be holding our final P&C meeting for the year via Zoom. I would like to thank our amazing P&C executive team for keeping our community connected during this challenging year and for embracing creative ways to continue fundraising to support our school programs. At this meeting, our school executive team will be presenting the preliminary findings of our Situational Analysis which will inform our 2021-2024 Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP). A situational analysis is an assessment of the school’s current state and is used to inform our improvement journey in learning, teaching and leading. We examine both internal and external quantitative and qualitative data sources as well as feedback from staff, student and community surveys and focus groups to determine our areas of strength and areas for development. We look forward to sharing our findings of our Situational Analysis on Monday evening.

Have a lovely weekend!

Kind Regards,

Marion Walsh-Gay

KW NEWS Kindergarten have been studying the author, Pamela Allen, this term. We have been reading, discussing, writing, acting out stories and creating artworks around some of her books. We are enjoying learning about her books. Some writing samples from a few of her books. I wish I had a pirate suit so I could command all the boys to join the pirate crew. I would visit the people and my cousins would be the boss when I’m not there. By Lukas I wish I had a pirate ship to sail to Queensland and to visit my Grandma and Grandpa. By Benny If Alexander came to school he would come into our classroom and dance on all our work. By Oscar Alexander would lay eggs and mess up and play all day. He would get people to do maths all day long. By Chloe If Alexander came to school he would lay eggs so that we could make scrambled eggs. We will need a bowl, 2 eggs, olive oil and a bowl. First we will crack the eggs, put some salt, mix it and then put it in a pan. By Leo

1H NEWS Last week in 1H we learnt about the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali. It celebrates the victory of light over darkness, of good over evil. We watched the story of Ram and Sita and tried Indian sweets called gulab jamun. Most of our class thought they were delicious. After that we made diyas out of clay to hold a little candle.

For Science, 1H made our own piece of recycled paper out of paper and cardboard from our class recycling bin. We had to rip up the paper into tiny pieces and soak it in water overnight. Then we used an electric beater to make it into pulp. We used the pulp and a paper making kit to make our new paper. Some of us put perfume into the pulp and our paper smelt nice. We had to let it dry in the sun.

Page 6: BEAUTY POINT BUZZ

At RoboKids we had to follow instructions on the IPad to build a vehicle that would pull a load. We added a motor to our machine to make it go. Then we had to do coding on the IPad to tell our little vehicle how to move. We had a competition to see how many wheels our vehicles could pull.

3C NEWS 3C have been working on a very exciting project in conjunction with 3RJ, 3K and non-for-profit organisation Planting Seeds, to create a Bed and Breakfast highway for birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators and encourage biodiversity around our school. We conducted an initial investigation to establish how many native plants and creatures live in our school environment and worked to create new habitats for them. We planted different native and non-native plants in planters near the play equipment that include self-watering wicking beds. Here we are continuing our investigation by collecting data on our school’s ‘bug traffic’.

BookBot Trial Day Week 8:

A pilot program using the BookBot technology has been underway at the State Library and two other DoE NSW Schools. Beauty Point PS Library will join the pilot program by having a trial day in week 8 for Stage 2 students and the Librarian to give feedback on.

BookBot has been created by an Australian company, Wriveted, to facilitate improvements in children's reading frequency. Using the technology, students answer questions about reading preferences and read short passages then book suggestions are printed out for the student.

Providing additional help to teacher librarians when encouraging student’s autonomy in selecting a wider choice of books to borrow from school libraries.

Ms Flower has received pre-trial feedback from the Stage 2 students more than 58% would like to have a way of selecting books autonomously ie without having to always ask for assistance with finding new books they enjoy & that are of the correct reading ability level.

If you have time at home (watching TV is a great time) and would like to cover the new books we have received for our library please see Ms Flower. Happy Reading, Ms. Flower MEd(TeacherLibrarian)

P&C NEWS Dear Parents and Carers, Our final P&C meeting for the year will be on Monday 23rd November at 7pm via Zoom. This is the most important meeting of the year in that we will vote on the school’s requests for funding for 2021 and Marion will present the school’s Situational Analysis which is part of the school planning process. We hope many of you can join! Last Friday, I had the pleasure of filming some short (and very sweet!) video clips of each class and their artworks! They are all so proud of their masterpieces - as they well should be! The artworks are wonderful which is all the more amazing given that most of the direction to create them had to be given remotely due to parents not being allowed on site! We have intentionally saved money on framing (using Ikea frames) so that families can reframe according to their decor. To bid on the awesome artworks, the birthday announcements and other wonderful donated items please visit: https://www.32auctions.com/BPPS2020 The auction will run until Friday 27 November at 6pm. The Fun Run has been reconciled and we’re thrilled to announce we raised $33,175! A huge effort in a difficult year for fundraising - and so much fun for everyone involved! Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the event. Finally our donation drive is still on! Donations can either be made via Trybooking (with administration costs) at https://www.trybooking.com/BKXTP or direct to our P&C bank account (without fees) BSB 633000 Acct 156 149 130 . We apologise for being all about fundraising this year and not being able to have the fun along with the fundraising! Here’s hoping that 2021 sees us back on track with the Fireworks night and the fundraiser - and likely the Fun Run continuing as an event on the annual calendar! As always, any questions please just ask at [email protected] Many thanks Your P&C Exec Here’s a snapshot of the artworks! They look even better in real life!

REMINDERS FROM THE OFFICE – WATER BOTTLES AND HATS! Currently we have many students coming to the office requiring water and to borrow a hat. Due to the COVID restrictions, the students are not able to access the school bubblers so require their own water bottle at school. Please remember to send your child to school daily with a full drink bottle and their hat, especially as we begin to experience much warmer weather at school. If your child has borrowed an office hat, can they please return it to the office. We also have a number of students requiring cutlery to be able to eat their lunch or canteen order - we ask parents to please provide cutlery in your child’s school bag. The feedback and suggestions from the survey will be collated, reflected upon and considered in guiding future planning. We will be sending out another survey in the coming weeks which we will be asking for feedback and suggestions about the upcoming Dec/January 2021 Vacation Care. Feedback provides positive criticism and allows us to see what and where we can improve. Donations of Pre-loved Toys We have been including the children in the decisions around what is planned at OOSH. Ensuring that all children’s voices are heard and including the children in decisions that directly affect them is an important aspect of our philosophy here at the service. There have been some requests for some different types of toys. We are putting the call out to the wonderful school community – if you have toys, puzzles or board games in clean, working order, and are willing to part with them, we would love to hear from you. Our storage space is limited at OOSH, we may not be able to accept all donations but feel free to chat the centre if you have anything you would like to donate. Friendly Reminders • In order to maintain social distancing, we are asking our families to please collect your children from the

side gate on Purcell Avenue. When you arrive at the gate please call or text 0418609993 and a staff member will escort your child to the gate. It may get a little congested around the gate so if you have driven please wait in your car until you see your child walking up. Staff will be escorting children to the gate to ensure safe pickups.

• We are looking to add some new and exciting meals to the OOSH menu. We will begin asking the children for some ideas for breakfast, afternoon tea and late snack. If you know something that your children love, we ask that you please share the recipe with staff so we can re-create this for the children at OOSH. Please see next fortnight’s menu below.

• Please ensure you are letting the service know if your child(ren) are going to be absent from before school care or afterschool care by marking your child absent via the Xplor Home app, calling the service, sending a text message or sending an email. In accordance with our Absent and Missing Children Policy, staff have 30 minutes from the bell to locate children who have not rocked up to OOSH before we need to contact local police to report a missing child so kindly ask that parents please let us know ASAP.

If you have any questions, concerns or queries please don’t hesitate to contact the service. Beauty Point OOSH Team Ellie Smit and Zac Khan Centre Director and Assistant Director Staffed Hours: 7:15-10:30am & 2-6pm M I 0418 609 993 T I 9960 1095 F I 9960 6269 E I [email protected]

SCHOOL BUS REMINDER For students that catch the school bus, please remind them of the importance of OPAL Tap On and Tap Off at the start and at the end of each trip. This is important to ensure correct usage data is recorded which is used to plan school special and regular route services. Currently many students are failing to Tap On and Tap Off when using their Student/Child Opal Card.

2021 school travel applications are now open. Applications for student travel in 2021 opened from Monday 12 October 2020. Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass for 2021 can now apply online (https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/#/howToApply). A new application should be submitted if a student is applying for a school travel pass for the first time or requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who have changed school/campus, changed address, repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should re-apply or update their details (https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/#/updateDetails). *Applications must be completed by the student's parent or legal guardian if the student is aged under 16 years. Students 16 years and over must complete the application form themselves. Where there is a change of distance eligibility based on a student’s grade, the system will automatically update a student’s entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria (https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/#/whoIsEligible), they will receive an expiry notification via email. Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply. Term Bus Pass (https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/#/termBusPass) holders will receive a notification to re-apply. If a student needs to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2020 to ensure that current student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card remains valid. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2020, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued. Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2021. Enquiries regarding school student travel can be submitted to Transport for NSW at: https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback
