Beautiful Smile

Everyday has become a routine for you. You would wake up, make yourself

breakfast and you would go to school. However today was different, today was

your first day of being in high school after all.

"Anon-kun! Wake up!" Your mother calls out to you. You felt glad that you had

a tight knit family, even though it was just the three of you.

"I'm already awake mom!" You yell back at her.

As you brush your teeth to get ready for school, you thought how lucky you

must be. After all you live alone, a lot of high schoolers dream about it. Your

parent's pay for your apartment, and send you money every month. Your uncle

and aunt live about a 20 minute walk so they also drop by every week to check

on you. Other than that you were completely independent.

"Lets see here..." You put on your high school uniform. It was a change from

your old middle school uniform. This time you told yourself you would be more

sociable. After all you wanted to get away from your 8th grade syndrome from

before. Just thinking about it makes your cringe.

"Alright Anon... it's time..." You take a deep breath as you motivate yourself in

front of the mirror. "Time to face high school!"

After your motivational speaking you were on your way. "Lets see here..." It was

still a new high school so it was your first time actually going there. As you

round the corner you bump into a girl. 0

Her body was slender, her face was cute. She had short hair with a ponytail

sticking out one side of her head.

"Ouch" She squeaks as she hits the concrete.

"Ah sorry about that!" You stick out your hand to help her up.

She grabs your hand and pick herself up from the floor. As she stares at you

her eyes gleam.

"You are going to that high school too?" She must've recognized your uniform.

"Uh... yeah haha..."

You didn't expect it, but suddenly she goes on her tip toes and gives you a kiss.

You start to blush, just like her. When she pulls back, her eyes were gleaming

and she tells you. "My name is Kana... w-will you be my boyfriend!?" 0

You were shocked and flattered, however you couldn't accept her confession

after all. "Do I know you Kana-san?" Maybe you just forgot about her after

meeting her somewhere else. "I'm flattered but I can't really make a decision this

sudden..." You tell her what anybody would tell a girl who suddenly just

confessed to them.

"Nope, it's the first time I've met you... um..." She doesn't even bat an eyelash.

Why would a girl like her suddenly confess.

"Uh... yes my name is Anon-kun"

"Ah! Nice to meet you Anon-kun!" She grabs your right hand with both her

hands and she shakes it up and down. She looked like your typical energetic

girl.

"So if this was the first time we met... why are you confessing to me?"

"Simple!" She smiles. "I only have 1 year left to live so I want to experience what

being normal is like..." Her expression doesn't change. It was a face of someone

who has already accepted their death. "So what do you say Anon-kun? Even if

you don't want to be my boyfriend how about you be my friend?"

"Well then... hehe" You adopt a know-it-all tone. "Sudden confessions are

certainly not normal..." The first thing you think off was that this girl was

probably home schooled her entire life. "You have a lot to learn" You tell her.

"R-really!? will you teach me?" She takes out a book, it looked sort of like a

diary. In the front it read Kana's life.

"S-sure..." Her puppy like eyes makes you unable to abandon her.

"Yay!" She yells in celebration. She jumps up and down in celebration, it was

probably the first time you made a girl that happy by saying "sure"

"Well then Anon-kun lets be good friends from now on ok!?" She tries to pat

you on the back but she misses. "Oops hehe... let me try that again!" She was

your typical energetic girl character.

As you walk to school with her, a smile was plastered on her face. You are still

skeptical about her "disease" but you were glad you made a friend.

Arriving at school people starts to stare at the two of you. "Wow... first day of

school and they already look lovey dovey..." You could hear them murmur.

Acting bashful you pull your hand away from her. "Let's not walk hand in hand

shall we... friends don't really do that..."

She tilts her head as she looks at you like a puppy. "Really?" Then, once again

she starts scribbling down notes in her diary.

Both of you head down to the board which had class assignments for students.

It was already crowded when you both get there.

"Excuse me..." You try and squeeze through the tiny gaps in the crowd to see

which class you are in.

"Class 1-3 huh..."

It looked like she followed you through the sea of people as her head pops up

beside you. "Hmmm... lets see..." Her eyes intently scan the board. "It looks like

class 1-3 for me... how about you Anon?"

"Same class as you" You weren't sure if you were excited or was saddened by

the fact you were in the same class as her.

"Really! Thats great!" As both of you head down to your classroom she calls

out to you.

"Anon-kun..." Her face looked grim. That was the face you expected her to

show when she told you she only had one year to live.

"W-what?"

"I... I forgot my lunch at home!" She starts to tear up. "I'm going to be late! Tell

the teacher that I will be late okay!" She starts running off presumably to pick up

"Wait!" You call out to her. "Kana-san! I'll treat you to lunch."

"R-really?" She gets stunned in disbelief. "I've never been treated to lunch

before... it sounds interesting..." Her eyes at that moment looked melancholic. It

was a window to what she was really like on the inside.

She starts to walk back to you, and just as you were starting to get a feel for

her personality she smiles at you. "So Anon-kun... is the reason you rejected

my confession because you had a girlfriend?" Her eyes start to tease you.

"Really? Thats odd... You look handsome and all... but I guess thats just me

talking haha!" You start to blush, even though she is weird she did look pretty

cute. "Well then I'll go on ahead!" She tells you as she turns around.

The girl just glares at her. "Watch where your going"

It's a nice school, prestigious and it had a good reputation. "Hmmm I wonder if

During the entrance exam you helped a girl who was about to miss her

entrance exam. She was exactly your type. You couldn't help but blush as you

try and remember her. "I think her name was Tsubasa-chan..."

Just then, you hear a girl scream. "Kya!" You look around the corner and it

was her. It was as if the gods of luck are on your side today.

"Jeez Tsubasa..." She whispers to herself. "You are so clumsy..." The girl of

your dreams, the girl who made your heart beat during the entrance exams is

"Hmmm I might be coming on too strong if I go up to her now" Was your

thought. You decide it woudld be best to ignore her for now.

You look at your watch and immediately you panic. "Damnit! I'm late already!"

You try and look around for your class but exploring has now gotten you lost.

"Damnit..."

You run around the school until finally you arrive at your class. That day you

were 15 minutes late. "Shit..." You try and catch your breath at the door of

your classroom.

"A-Anon-kun?" Tsubasa calls out to you as she tries to catch her breath.

"Hehe... it looks like we are in the same class too..." As you just stare at her

she reintroduces herself.

"Ah you probably don't remember me" She shakes your hand. "My name is

Tsubasa... we met at the entrance exams remember? You gave me a bike ride

to the entrance exam hehe..."

You remembered her clearly, but you pretended not to know her. "A-ah! I

remember now..." You exclaim.

The moment you remember she starts to blush. "T-thanks for that day...

without you I wouldn't have made it to the entrance exams... hehe..."

You just smile at her and tell her "Not to worry about it"

Just like that day, both of you were late. The teacher was already beginning

her lessons when you both come in.

In unison you both say "Excuse me..."

The teacher immediately glares at both of you. "First day and you are already

late?"

Both of you bow. "Sorry!"

The class laughs at both of you. "Hehe... first day and already we have a

couple in our class..." The class murmurs.

Tsubasa goes on ahead. She crouches down to prevent herself from blocking

the board as she takes her seat.

As you look around you see that there is only two more open seats.

One beside Aya, and the other beside Tsubasa. Aya was waving you over as

she smiles and points to the open seat beside her.

You look at Tsubasa, then you look over to Aya. Looking between both of them

you couldn't decide who to sit by.

"Teach!" You call over to the now obviously miffed teacher.

"What is it?" She snaps.

"Is it alright if I move Aya with me?"

"W-why?" The teacher and the class are now puzzled by your actions.

With a smirk on your face you answer. "I need to take care of Aya, so I want

her to make friends with Tsubasa-chan..."

Immediately Tsubasa-chan blushes as you put focus on her.

The teacher has had enough of your shenanigans.

"Fine... Fine do whatever"

You smile as you take Aya by her hand and move her desks. Your seat, is now

the seat in the middle of Aya and Tsubasa. 0

"Are you fine now Mr. Anon?" The teacher snaps at you.

You just shoot her a smile back. "Couldn't be better hehe..."

The teacher continues her introduction. It was the usual stuff, she tells you

how to get grades etc.

"Ne... Ne... Anon" Aya was trying her best to get your attention. "She is pretty

cute" She points to Tsubasa.

Tsubasa, overhearing your conversation starts to blush. "T-thanks... I-It's Aya

right?"

"Yep! Nice to meet you!" They shake hands as they introduce themselves to

each other.

"My name is Tsubasa"

"Hehe... thats a nice name..."

The teacher clears her throat as if to get your attention.

"Sorry!" Aya and Tsubasa apologize in unison.

The teacher continues as Aya intently listens to her. Aya then raises her hand

interrupting the teacher for a second time.

"Yes?"

Aya stands up with confidence. "Excuse me... but when are we going to have

our first field trip?" The class laughs, after all what kind of high school student

still cared about field trips.

"It will be later in the year" She answers calmly as Aya sits back down.

However not long before the teacher continue, Aya once again raises her hand.

"Excuse me... but when do we have our first show and tell?"

To your class it looked as if Aya was mocking the teacher. "Ms. Aya!" The

teacher snaps at her. "Please stand outside if you are just going to interrupt

me!"

Aya blushes as she apologizes. "Sorry... I won't interrupt again..." You couldn't

help but smile as you see Aya get startled when the teacher snapped at her.

The teacher finally finishes, and now it was the assignment of the class reps.

"Well then, any one want to volunteer?" Immediately Aya's hands shoot up.

"Okay, we have Aya for the girls... how about the guys?"0

You volunteer yourself. "I'll do it"

Instantly Aya's face lights up. "Yay!" She tells you. "I'm glad!"

"Alright then, since the class representatives have been decided lets begin the

lesson" Your high school was known for it's high passive average to the best

universities. Now you know why, they never let up. Other high schools will

only have half days during the first day but today was a full day.

You see Aya look around the room as she observes everything. Afterwards,

she would scribble notes into her diary. The other girl beside you, Tsubasa,

takes notes intently. It was ironic, that the airheaded and clumsy Aya

volunteered herself to be class rep, when Tsubasa looked more like the part.

"This is the beginning of spring..." You whisper to yourself. You could see the

jealous stares of your classmates as you sit beside the two cutest girls in your

class. Throughout the morning classes you had a smug look on your face.

As the lunch bell rings Aya stands up. "It's lunch time!" She yells out. "It's time

to get our nutrition!" You felt embarassed for her as the class laughs at her.

"Alright Anon! Lets go!" Aya's eyes had determination in them. It looked as

though she was taking an entrance exam, as opposed to going for lunch. 0

"Great!" As you guys were about to follow Aya she bursts back in.

was out there!" Then she notices Tsubasa. "Did you already forget about me

Anon?" She pretends like she was about to cry.

"No! What!" You were getting pulled into Aya's pace. "It's not that..."

Before you worry your head off, Aya explains everything to her. "Hehe, it was

just a joke, Anon rejected me this morning"

"O-oh really?" Tsubasa's eye had a look of relief after she found out you don't

have a girlfriend yet.

"Anyways lets go! All three of us!" Aya was a ball of excitement and energy.

You shake your head as Aya runs out of the classroom. "Hey! No running in the

halls!" You hear a teacher yell at her.

"Thats what I meant by company haha..." Maybe that was Aya's 8th grade

syndrome... the fantasy that she only had a year left to live.

"She seems interesting hehe" You breathe a sigh of relief as Tsubasa doesn't

seem to be weirded out by Aya. 0

Both of you follow Aya as she waves back. "Over here guys!" She leads you to

a cherry blossom tree in the middle of a field at the back of the school.

Tsubasa blushes as she admires the scenery. "Wow... it's beautiful"

Aya was already looking at it. She was scanning it up and down as she draws it

in her diary.

"Let me just set-up, I should be done soon" It felt like you were going for a

picnic rather than lunch.

"This was my mom's special 'friend making' lunch!" Tsubasa proudly holds it up.

It was a big lunchbox, it was big enough to feed 5 people.

It definitely felt like a feast is about to be had by you, Aya and Tsubasa.0

As you watch Tsubasa, second by second you feel like she is getting more

beautiful by the second. "I'm quite alright but if you insist" She smiles as she

Like a gentleman sent from above, you help the maiden in front of you. Aya was

busy trying to draw something in her diary.

With you helping Tsubasa it was a breeze to set up the food. "Thanks Anon-

kun" Her smile melts your heart.

"Aya-san! Time to eat!" Aya, like a dog starts to run towards both of you.

Her eyes were gleaming. "Wow... it looks so delicious! It looks way better than

the hospital food!"

She sits down as she prepares to dig in. "Thanks for the food!" Aya happily

exclaims as she starts eating. "Wow! This is great!" Anyway you cut it, she

looked just like a normal girl.

She puts down her plate and she holds Tsubasa's hand just like she did to

yours this morning. "Tsubasa-chin... you would make a great wife one day... I'm

glad I got to eat this before I died..."

Tsubasa was moved. "T-thanks... haha..." It was the only thing she could say.

"But my mom cooked it hehe..."

"Hmmm... interesting... would your mom be able to teach me how to cook?"

Aya's gaze was so intense it could burn a hole through Tsubasa.

"I-I'll ask her"

"Thanks! I'd be glad to be her disciple!" It was a lively lunch you had and you

felt like you were the luckiest guy in the whole school. After all, on your first day

you are eating with two cute girls.

However, everything must come to an end. As the lunch bell signifies the end of

lunch all three of you pack up the lunchbox. "So thats what it was like eating

lunch with friends..." You notice Aya write in her diary again. 2

"Aya-chan, lets go" You try and call her over but she still looked busy.

"You can go on ahead Anon, I just need to finish this up" She smiles at you. It

looks as if she was drawing the tree that you just ate your lunch under.

As she draws, seconds tick away, you wanted to tell her to hurry up, but her

innocent eyes captivates you to the point of being speechless.

It took about another 15 minutes until finally she smiles. "Done!"

"Finally..." You break free of her spell. "Whats that for anyways?" You were

still skeptical about her whole confession of having only one year left to live.

"Hehe... I just want to have a record of everything I've done up until now..." Her

eyes turn melancholic. "After all my time is limited..."

The mood turns gloomy. She probably felt it was her fault as she tries to get it

into a cheerful atmosphere again. "A-ah! Forget what I said haha!" She laughs

to try and hide her true feelings. "Lets just go okay?" She tries to drag you

away but it was almost as if her legs stopped listening to her.

She slowly falls to the ground, she hits her chin on the rough pavement. She

tries her best to hold her scream in, she tries her best not to show any signs of

pain.

"Aya!" You yell at her.

You help her up immediately. Blood covers her face. "I-I'm okay Anon" You

can see she was on the verge of tears. Why was she trying to act strong. "I-I'll

j-just go to the nurse's office... you can go back to class..."

However with a stern voice you tell her "No, I'll take you to the nurse's office!" 0

The nurse immediately takes a look at her. "Oh my god!" She gasps. "sit

here!" She leads Aya to the chair.

You were shocked. Was it her disease that caused that to happen? "You

there" The nurse calls out to you. "You can go back to class if you want"0

"O-okay..." You decide to go back to class, to Tsubasa. Before you leave you

got to see Aya. Tears roll down her cheeks as the nurse try and sew her wound

on her chin shut.

"I hope it won't leave a scar on your cute face..." The nurse tells her.

However Aya, with a tone of deep sadness, responds with. "Thats fine... I don't

think anybody would want someone with no future..."

You don't know why she said it, but it felt ominous to you.

Back in class, being late for the second time did not bode well with you. The

teacher just glares at you. "Late for the second time today huh?"

You didn't mind it, after all you were helping Aya.

The whole afternoon classes you couldn't focus, your mind wanders to how Aya

is doing. Then, your question is answered when Aya's fragile figure shows up.

"Excuse me..." She was less enthusiastic now.

The nurse was with her. The nurse pulls the teacher outside as Aya goes to

her seat and starts to pack her things.

"Aya are you okay?" You ask her.

She tries her best to fake a smile. "Y-yeah hehe..." She had a bandage on her

chin. "The nurse said I should go home and rest for the rest of the day..."

"Ah is that so..."

After she tells you her situation the teacher comes back. "Are you going to be

okay going home alone Aya?"

She shows concern for her student.

"Y-yeah I will be fi-" Before Aya can even finish a boy stands up and volunteers

to take her home.

"I'll take her home!"

The teacher looks at him. "Are you sure... um..."

"The name is Kaworu! I'll take Aya home!"

Aya was shocked to see someone volunteer to take care of her... 0

You stand up. "Actually I'll take her home, as a class representative I think it's

only fitting" You were even surprised at yourself, maybe it was because you

have now taken a keen interest on this girl... this girl who claims she only has

one year left on this earth.

"Ok then" The teacher excuses both you and Aya for the afternoon classes.

"So... do you live far from here?" Aya was being uncharacteristically quiet.

Was that energetic girl character just an act.

She shakes her head no. "No... just a 15 minute walk" She forces herself to

smile again. Awkward silence falls between you two. She was different from

this morning. It was almost as if you are now walking with a completely different

person.

You keep following her in silence until she finally breaks it. "Anon... I'm sorry..."

"About what?" You were confused.

"For inconveniencing you..." She must be blaming herself for making you skip

class.

You just laugh. "Don't worry, I get to skip class because of you!" As best as

you could, you try and cheer her up.

"I-it's okay?"

"Of course!"

"T-thank goodness that you weren't mad at me..." She breathes a sigh of relief

as she knows you are still her friend.

As she said, it didn't take long until you finally reach her house. It was a shabby

apartment building. "You live alone?" You almost couldn't believe a young girl

like her would live alone.

"Yes" She unlocks her door. "Come in Anon!"

"If you will excuse me..." You say as you enter in her house. As you predicted,

it was a one room apartment. Everywhere was books, but not any books, they

were all her diary. The whole room was covered witht hem.

"S-so... you really like recording your daily life huh..."

She just smiles and nods her head yes. "So, what about your parents?"

Immediately you realize how insensitive of a question it was when she falls into

silence. You try to recover from the awkward situation. "A-ah forget I said any-"

"They abandoned me hehe..." Her smile was an empty one.

"A-abandoned?" You couldn't believe what you were hearing.

She just nods her head yes. "Mhmmm... after all, I'm a girl with no future

Anon..." As she says those words, you could see just how lonely and sad she

was in her eyes.1

Immediately she smiles and offers you tea. "Anon! do you want something to

drink?"

You stop spacing out. "Uh... yeah sure..."

"Let me just get changed okay?" She puts on tea before going into her room.

When she went into her room you could hear a faint crying.

As you take a seat you bump into the piles of books everywhere.

"Shit!" You scream internally as the books create a landslide falling

everywhere. You panic and try to put it back the way it was, however the last

diary that you picked up was opened. On the page it read. "Why did this

disease choose me?" 0

Curiosity gets the better of you. You flip through the tear stained pages of her

diary. At first it was more a log of her symptoms.

"Lately I've been having double visions... I think it's just a lack of sleep..."

As you flip through the symptoms get worse.

"It's like my body isn't mine anymore, it just won't listen when I tell it to move..." It

looked as if the diary that you chose to read was the first one she ever did. It

was dated in the middle of middle school.

Just then she comes out of her room as the whistle on the kettle starts blowing.

"I'm coming!" She says with a smile on her face.

Immediately you drop her diary into the pile. "Ah.. Aya..." You try to hide you

spying on her.

"What could her disease be..." She seems like she was back to her normal

"cheery self"

She serves you tea and she happily skips towards her fridge and pulls out a

cake.

"This is the first time in a while that I have had guests!" Her eyes were filled

with excitement.

"Really?" You couldn't help but wonder what her fate would be.

"Mhmm!" She slices you a piece of cake. As she hands you the plate she

accidentally drops it on you. "ah! sorry!"

You try to pick up the piece of cake off the floor as you smile at her. "It's okay

Aya-chan"

"Ah... I'm so clumsy!" She stands up, runs to her kitchen and gets rags to clean

up the mess she has made. 0

She wipes away the remnants of the cake off the floor and on your shirt. "I'm

really sorry about this Anon!" Once again she apologizes and you tell her that

"It's okay" Once again.

As she stands up to put away the rag she notices the stain on your uniform.

"Ah no good! no good!" She takes off your shirt forcefully as you get caught off

guard by her sudden pounce.

"H-hey! what are you doing!"

"I have to wash it! I can't let this stain!" She leaves you once again, half naked

in her tiny one room apartment.

Any guy in your shoes would've definitely taken advantage of her by now, but

you felt something different for her. Was it pity? Was it interest?

When she came back she throws you a shirt. "Here put this on for now... it's my

dads he left it here the last time he visited hehe..."

After you put it on, you guys restart. She hands you the cake, this time she was

more careful. "Here you go" She hands it to you with a smile.

Then you try and think of something to talk to her about...0

disease exactly..." You apologize. "I bumped into your diaries earlier and saw

"Ah... really..." You expected to be mad, but she just smiles. "My... my disease

is in my spinal cord... the doctors say little by little it's dying so."

You listen intently to her. "They tell me that the progress is slow, but the

symptoms are there hehe..." You think back to all her clumsiness.

"Ah... is that so..." You try to cheer her up. "Theres a cure right"

She just smiles as you as she says. "Not right now... they told me that it's

"Anon!" She starts to blush. "W-what are you doing out here? How's Aya-

You just smile at her as you take the bottle of sake from her. "Aya is doing

"So are you going home right now?"

As you walk her home, you get to know her. You find out they recently just

Bit by bit, you guys reminisce about that night. How she lost a sandal, how she

got lost after you left her, and to make her feel better you bought her a plastic

ring.

"Heh... I never thought I would meet that boy again" Tsubasa blushes as she

smiles. "Ah... so romantic... it's like fate brought us to meet each other again

hehe..."

"R-really?" You couldn't hide your true feelings as well. Who would've thought

that Tsubasa was a childhood friend of yours.

"Ah look at these two" Your mother was gawking at both of you and it made it

extremely awkward for you.

"Mom!" You tell her.

Right before you reach her you hear everyone's gasp in the basketball court.

You point to Tsubasa still feeling for her glasses on the floor.

He looks confused but he says "Y-yeah... sure..." He walks over to her and he

introduces himself.

Then you focus your attention to Aya-chan. You run out into the court as you

yell out her name "Aya!" You pick her up from the floor, she was on the verge

of tears.

"Aya are you okay?"

"Y-yes..." She responds. With that incident her tryout was cut short. She

realizes that she can't be part of any sports clubs. You help her walk to the

locker room and she changes into her normal uniform.

"Hehe... I guess I can't be part of the sports teams huh..." She just tries to

laugh it off, but you can see she was hurt inside. After all her wish of living a

normal life for one year is severely limited.

"Aya... good luck!" You tell her.

"I will" She smiles back at you.

"Well then lets go" You try and grab her hand to walk her home. You can't let

her walk home alone after all.

"W-what? where to?"

"Silly girl, I'll walk you home!" She was visibly happy at your offer.

You put your hand on your chin as if to show you were thinking about it. "Is that

are walking to school with your girlfriend, but you just had a feeling of

However once you get to the school gates your questions were finally

Aya gets sent to the hospital. You find out that her disease is progressing

faster than expected and at most she will have 2 more months of being in

school before being confined at the hospital.

Tsubasa tries her best to be a good girlfriend. You can see she tries her best

at everything even though she is a bit airheaded. However, your feelings for

Aya intensifies, is it just pity or is it love?9

You felt happiness overflow throughout your body. "I... I love you too" You tell

her.

Her face looked relieved. "T-thank goodness!" After her adrenaline subsides it

was almost as if her energy is being sapped away from her. "I'm so relieved

you said yes..."

"Were... you that worried?"

"Haha... It might seem dumb but I was... I was worried you would say no to

me..."

With one courageous action on Tsubasa's part you officially become a couple.

After the afternoon classes end you walk her home and you give the news to

your mother who was ecstatic about the news.

"Really!?" She squeals in a high pitch voice.

"Thats great!!" She yells out. You couldn't even sleep that night out of

excitement. Your excitement, that will be replaced with worry and concern the

next day.

It started out like the usual, Tsubasa picks you up from your house and you

walk to school. Something was different about this morning though. You

couldn't quite put your finger on it. It wasn't the fact that for the first time you

are walking to school with your girlfriend, but you just had a feeling of

uneasiness the whole time.

"Are you okay Anon?" Even the usually oblivious Tsubasa could notice

something was off.

"Everything is fine haha" You tell her with a smile.

However once you get to the school gates your questions were finally

answered.

"Somebody call an ambulance quick!" There was a crowd gathered in the front.

"What happened Shin!?" You could hear the panicked voices of the crowds.

"I... I don't know... she just collapsed!"

You run towards the gathering of people and you squeeze through. "Excuse

me"

Then what you saw was Aya lying down in the middle of the pavement as if she

is sleeping. "Aya!" You yell out to her trying to wake her up but she remains

unconscious. "Aya!" It didn't take long for the ambulance to get there.

Your first reaction was to skip school and accompany Aya to the hospital as the

ambulance takes her away. However you knew you would be leaving Tsubasa

alone. Turning to her you ask her "Tsubasa-chan, do you want to go with

Aya?"

She apologizes. "Ah sorry, I have a couple of things to do today... I can't skip,

but I can visit her afterschool."

"Thats alright then, I'll visit her afterschool with you."

After the commotion dies down you can see Shin watching from afar, beside

him a couple of his friends from the basketball club.

"Shin, did you choose the wrong girl haha?" You can see the indecisiveness in

Shin's eyes... 3

The whole day goes by slowly. You could think of nothing but Aya. "Is she

alright? is she going to be okay?" Was the only thing you could think of.

You felt guilty, as it almost felt like you were being unfair to Tsubasa-chan.

What bothered you the most was the rumors going around the school.

"Did you hear about that Aya girl? I heard she is dying" Rumors certainly did go

around fast.

"Eh? I heard she is just really airheaded, I don't know what Shin saw in her..." It

sounded like they were just bitter girls vying for Shin's attention.

Like the usual, Tsubasa brings you her home made lunch. "It's delicious today

to Tsubasa"

It really felt like you were in the spring of your youth. A stark contrast to Aya.

"A-Anon-kun..." Tsubasa calls out to you. "R-remember your promise of a tour

around town?" You completely forgot about it.

"Ah yeah! Sorry I completely forgot about it!"

"Haha... thats fine... but I was wondering... maybe we can do it this weekend?"

going on that day. "Sure" You smile at her. It was still 3 days away anyways.

After lunch, your mind was a bit more relaxed. You kept thinking about your

date with Tsubasa and time seemed to go by faster.

As soon as the teacher dismisses the class you and Tsubasa prepare to go to

the hospital.

"I hope she is doing okay..." Tsubasa tells you.

"I'm sure she is..." Tsubasa was still oblivious to her disease. However even

Tsubasa was starting to notice something. "Isn't it weird Anon?"

"Hmm? what is?"

"Well you know... Aya has been falling down a lot lately right... could she have a

more serious disease?"

You just laugh. "I'm sure she is fine!"

Arriving at the hospital, you expected Aya to be confined in a bed but to your

surprise she was up and about walking with a doctor.

"Doc! Guess what I have a date this weekend!" Her eyes was filled with joy.

"Thats great Aya-chan!" They were walking so casually in the hospital grounds

almost as if Aya fainting was a regular occurence... 0

"Anon? Tsubasa?" Aya excitedly waves at both of you when she sees you

coming.

"Aya-chan!" Tsubasa runs to her with concern. "How are you feeling?"

Aya just smiles. "I'm feeling better haha... I was just... um..."

The doctor helps her out. "She was just fatigued this morning."

Aya agrees with him almost immediately. "Yeah! thats right I just felt a bit tired

haha..."

It was subtle, but you notice a stagger in Aya's steps.

The doctor then turns to you. "Ah you must be Anon! Aya has been talking

about you non-sto-"

"Doc!" Aya stops him instantly. "T-that was our secret!" Aya's face was red

with embarrassment.

"Hahaha" The doctor just laughs at Aya-chan. "Well then I'll leave you three

alone then"

As the doctor walks away, Aya and Tsubasa find a place to sit down and catch-

relief. "I was so scared this morning I couldn't focus in my classes at all"

You knew under Aya's smile she must be scared as well.

All three of you spend about half an hour until finally Aya speaks up. "Hehe we

should go home before it gets dark!"

Both you and Tsubasa nod in agreement. "So how's Shin doing?" Tsubasa

asks her.

Aya instantly blushes. "We are doing good hehe..." Tsubasa bumps into her to

get her to open up more. "W-We are going on a date this weekend..." You

could see she was excited about it.

Then, as observant as ever Aya turns to you and Tsubasa. "How about the

both of you? I can tell something happened... did you confess Anon?"

You just smile as you shake your head no. "It was actually Tsubasa that did

hehe..." You point to your girlfriend.

"Eh!?" Aya says in shock. "Thats great Tsubasa-chan! You are so

courageous!" Tsubasa couldn't even say anything back as she hides her

blushing face.

Finally you three come to a crossroad. "Ah I have to go this way!" Aya says.

"I'll see you guys tomorrow!"

"Bye Aya-chan!" Tsubasa waves goobye to Aya. As Aya walks away, you can

see the stagger in her strides.

knew it, her fainting was not just because she was lacking sleep. "They want

me to admit myself to the hospital Anon... they want me to start rehabilitation

the therapy to slow the disease's progression..."

She forces herself to be more cheery. "I... I don't know what to do... I'm

scared... Anon... I'm scared of what tomorrow will bring... I'm scared of time..."

It was the first time you saw Aya like that. "Why don't you ask your parents?"

"I tried to call them... they told me I can do whatever I wanted hehe" Aya truly

was alone in this world.

here for me..." You realize that out of all her peers you are the only one that

already raining so heavily.

Arriving in school you found it odd that Aya, who is usually there before you

You could feel rage taking over you. This was probably why Aya was hesitant

"Hey Shin-senpai" You go up to him with a smile on your face. You were still

trying your best to be civil.

"What is it?" He seems suprised.

"I'm just wondering do you know where Aya is?"

"Why?" He asks defensively. "Ah whatever, she is probably at the park we

usually met up at"

"Thanks" You wanted to hit him right then and there but you try your best to

keep calm. That is until he makes fun of Aya.

"I suggest staying away from her! She said she will get paralyzed soon" He

yells to you. "who would want somebody who can't even move their hips!" He

starts to laugh.

He turns to his friend as they laugh at Aya's fate together, Aya's lost future.

Then when he turns to you again the last thing he saw was your fist hurling at

him.

As it makes impact on his face the shockwave of the hit traverses the muscle,

fat and skin making a ripple effect on his face.

He hits the ground as he drops his umbrella. With a death glare you tell him.

"Don't come near Aya ever again..."

Even though he was an upperclassman, the adrenaline allows you to

"Tsubasa-chan, I'm going to go pick up Aya okay?" Tsubasa looks

dumbfounded.

"O-okay..." You leave her at school as you run to the location Shin told you.

You find Aya standing in the rain. She was wearing a nice dress that was

soaked by the rain water. "Aya?" You call out to her.

When she turns to you she tries to force a smile through her heartbreak. "A-

Anon G-good morning" She stutters.

"What are you doing out here in the rain!?" You put cover her with your

umbrella.

She just smiles without saying a word. "I told him..." She whispers to you.

"I heard..."

"He broke up with me..."

"I know"

Her voice was quaking. It was as if she was trying to hold back the feeling in

the back of your throat when you are just about to cry. "He told me that he

made a mistake"

You are rendered speechless. "He said he can't be with a walking corpse..." 0

Although the rain covered her face, you knew her tears were mixed with the

rainwater.

"I'm useless Anon..." You wanted to tell her that she isn't. You wanted to cheer

She then turns to you. "I just wanted to be a normal girl... was it too much to

ask for" It didn't take long for her mask of being strong to break down, only for

her true self to be revealed.

You admired her courage, but in truth it was all a front. As the facade breaks

down it revealed what she truly felt inside. She was a lonely and scared high

school girl.

She collapses into your chest as you give her an embrace. Together with the

rain, her tears soaks your clothes.

You comfort her for a good 15 minutes then when she finally calms down she

tells you to go back to school. "I think I'll be okay now Anon... I'll just go home

without speaking she points to a sign.

"The zoo?" She just nods her head as she blushes. Just as you suspected

she was just a normal high school girl.

going to the zoo?"

After your little break you continue walking around the zoo. Once again her

eyes was filled with child like innocence.

As the end of your date comes closer she whispers to you. "Anon-kun... thanks

for today hehe... I really wish I could freeze time right now"

You proceed to go back home. Over the last few days everytime you see Aya

you could feel your heart beat faster. You try to sort out your thoughts. "Am I

even call Aya's name. "Teach" You raise your hand. "Aren't you going to call

Then her face looked as if she just remembered something. "Yes thats right...

Aya came to talk to me yesterday with her doctor." The class murmurs amongst

themselves. "It seems like they want to withdraw Aya from classes until further

notice"

"Wow... she really must be dying then..." You hear someone in class whisper.

"I thought those were just rumors..."

Her normal life, the life she wished for is cut short.

Tsubasa has a look of concern. "I hope she is okay..."

"I'm sure she will be" You tell her with a smile. After morning classes, your

opportunity came. It was time to break the news to Tsubasa

actions the last few days it felt as if she already knew.

"Anon-kun?" She looked surprised. "What are you doing here?"

"I..." You try to catch your breath. "I have something to tell you..." She looks

over to the doctor as if asking him permission. He just nods giving her the go

ahead.

"Lets go somewhere more private"

You follow her to the apartment complex's visitor area.

"Whats up Anon-kun?" Her smile was a mix of sadness and happiness.

"I... I just wanted to know why you didn't even say goodbye!" You felt frustrated

at her for trying to leave without letting you know.

"Ah... about that..." She tries to find an excuse. "You see... It was so sudden...

and..."

"Aya! Just tell me the truth!"

She gets surprised as you become more forceful. "Hehe... I guess I'm a bad liar

after all huh..." Forcing a smile she continues her explanation. "A-after

yesterday I got scared... scared that I will get hurt again... after all you had

Tsubasa." She still doesn't know you broke up with her. "I was scared that if I

stay by you I would fall even more in love with you... I... I had to distance

myself!"2

As tears roll down her cheeks she starts to blame you. "I accepted my fate

Anon... deep down I was ready to die... but being with you... being with you

makes me greedy... I want to live longer... I want to spend more time with you!"

She cries out. "I... I'm sorry Anon-kun... I said I was going to try and be strong

but I realized after yesterday I'm weak hehe..."

Then your body moves swiftly. You grab her and you give her a kiss. Her eyes

widen with shock as her cheeks turn red. "Aya... I love you... and as I said I'll

always be there for you..."

"W-what about Tsubasa?"

"I told her my true feelings..." You show her the present she bought. "She said

it was for you..."

Aya then starts to cry. It almost as if she let all her feeligns out. "I... I'm so

happy... hehe... This is the happiest day of my life Anon..." You take her to the

car and together with her doctor you drive to the hospital.

"Anon-kun..." You could see the anxiety in her eyes.

"Aya... I don't know what the future might hold... but I do know one thing... I'll

always be by your side..." You take her hand to give her courage. "We'll face

this together okay?"

She smiles as she nods. "Thanks Anon..."

progression, first she lost the ability to run, then walk, then she became

confined to a wheelchair.

As you wheel her around she would keep on the optimistic smile of hers. "Anon

I love you hehe..." You still remember her say.

You keep to your promise. Everyday you would visit her at the hospital where

she had to spend most of her life. The next big event in your life and hers was

your graduation from high school and entry to university.

She lost the ability to speak when you entered university. "Aya-chan! look who

I brought with me today!"

"Aya-chan!" Tsubasa tried her best to lend both you and Aya strength. She

would eventually get married to Ryuuji.

Aya always get excited when she sees Tsubasa. Since she lost the ability to

speak she would write "Welcome Back!" On her pad of paper.

It was her main means of communication after losing the ability to speak. You

could still remember her last words to you though. It was "I love you."14

After you graduate from university you ask for her hand in marriage and she

cried tears of joy. It was a small ceremony with only your closest friends and

family invited. Naturally Tsubasa was invited.

"I do..." You answer the priest.

At this point she couldn't even hold a pen anymore. In order to communicate

she had a board with all the letters of the alphabet written on them. Her hands

glide across the board spelling out. "I do... I feel like the luckiest girl alive right

now"

Your marriage to her would only last for 6 months until she passes away from

suffocation. Although some people said you should've gone for someone else,

you just tell them that you loved Aya with all your heart and it was all worth it.

It still brings a tear to your eye when you remember Aya fighting for every last

second. She wanted to spend more time with you even if it's just a minute

amount of time.

The only thing she left you was her diaries. One day as you were cleaning up

you decide to take a trip back in time and read some of the entries that she

wrote.

"I met this interesting looking guy today, I tried to confess to him but he said no.

I'm still glad he said he would be my friend though!"

As you remember Aya you couldn't help but cry.

"This is bad... I'm really falling for him. He took me to the zoo today! It was so

fun. I hope I can do this... by myself..."
