Popping question a real puzzler: Winnipeg man proposes via the CryptoquipBy: Katherine Dow

FANS of the Free Press Diversions sectionfound themselves swept up in a homegrownromance Saturday. When decoded, the June30 Cryptoquip puzzle read, “A questionfound in black and white, as to how youwill spend your life. Rachael Hatherell giveme your day and night, and say yes tobecoming my wife? Will you marry me? —Daniel Minuk.”

Winnipeggers Minuk and RachaelHatherell are the couple behind the puzzleproposal. Minuk used the couple’s Saturdaytradition of doing the crossword andCryptoquip together at Starbucks to pop thequestion to his girlfriend of six years.

Don’t worry, folks: She said yes.“I started doing the Cryptoquip and I was

thinking, ‘This is a really long one.’ So I gota couple of letters, and he was just kind ofsitting back. He was still playing along, say-ing ‘I can’t believe you got that one without me,’ “ explainedHatherell. “And I was starting to fill in a few more letters and I thought‘Oh that’s so funny. That word, if you filled in a few more letters, couldbe Hatherell.’ Then I keep going and then I thought, ‘Oh that’s sofunny. That word could be Daniel if you filled in the D and the L.’ Andthen as I realized what it was, I broke down laughing and crying overthe paper.”

“I said, ‘I guess I should get down on one knee at this point,’ “ saidMinuk.

Minuk and Hatherell met in 2005 when attending law school togeth-er at the University of Manitoba.

“I heard her laughing and it was the best laugh out of all the girls inlaw school. And that was it,” said Minuk.

The two hope to marry in the summer, though they haven’t landedon a date yet.

Although Minuk’s proposal went off without a hitch, a lot of labourwent into its planning.

“I wanted to do something different, but we don’t have a special dayor song or anything like that. I figured one way that I could do it wasto use Starbucks and what we do on a regular basis,” said Minuk.

Minuk contacted the Free Press at the end of May and found out that

the paper outsources the Cryptoquip puz-zles from King Features. Another call to theNew York-based company, and the planwas in motion.

Ironically, Minuk got the final word thepuzzle was a go when he was filing divorcepapers for a client.

“I was just grinning ear to ear. I must havelooked pretty stupid filing these divorcedocuments in court and looking so happy,”Minuk joked.

Minuk said the hardest part was trying tomake sure no one they knew solved it firstand ruined the surprise. Minuk knew the

biggest threat lay in Hatherell’s smart-phone.

“In such an elaborate way of proposing,I couldn’t hold all of those unknown vari-ables certain,” said Minuk.

After a series of failed attempts at cuttingoff Hatherell’s phone use such as draining

her battery, removing her phone’s SIM card and disconnecting thewireless Internet, Minuk finally got his bride-to-be to turn off herphone under the ruse of spending uninterrupted, quality time togeth-er.

Minuk also wanted to make sure they did the puzzle as early as pos-sible. He made a series of what he calls “acceptable lies” for the ear-lier coffee date.

“I guess only in this case is lying OK,” Hatherell laughed. The “acceptable lies” paid off.“I was truly surprised. I picked up on none of it. It went amazingly,”

said Hatherell. After getting down on one knee on the patio of the Taylor Avenue

Starbucks, the couple toasted their engagement with free beveragescourtesy of the Starbucks employees who knew them as their Saturdayregulars.

“I probably wouldn’t have done it so elaborately if I hadn’t been alittle bit certain that she’d say yes,” said Minuk.

“It was always a yes,” Hatherell added [email protected] from the Winnipeg Free Press print edition July 2, 2012

Newest wedding trends take the cake(NC) - Modern brides are determined to make a grand statement

with a whole range of personalized wedding details. The planning is afun, but enormous task – and if you say you’re not engaged yet, youmight be soon.

New necklines: For years, there has been virtually no change inbridal looks as designers and brides alike selected strapless ball gownsas the style of choice – until now that is. Both illusion and asymmetri-cal necklines are coming on strong this year.

Back details: Brides are taking inspiration from the red carpet andchoosing dresses that feature pretty back designs. Why not? After all, their guests are looking at their backs for most of the ceremony soshow personal style with cascading ruffles or deep V-backs that accenta great figure.

Mixed metals: Take your pick of gold or silver, as both work well for2014. Look for bridal gowns that include subtle mixed metallicappliques woven throughout the dress.

Mix and match bridal parties: The parade of identical bridesmaidscoming down the aisle is so last year. Brides are carrying that personal-ization trend to their parties by having their attendants wear comple-mentary dresses thatflatter all body typesand skin tones.Wear the samecolour but choosebody flattering cutsthat ensure every-one looks great.

A l t e r n a t i v e l y,choose the same sil-houette but alloweach one to wear aunique shade.

Tips for planning a stress-free wedding(NC) Planning a dream wedding ranks as one of the most exciting

times for couples, but with so many details, it can also become verystressful.

1. Make lists. Before you start working on the wedding plans, takesome time to prepare detailed lists. Sit down and think of all of the keytasks and decisions required to make your wedding day perfect. Start abinder or electronic spreadsheet to keep track of your planning progress.

2. Set your budget and stick to it. Nothing is more stressful than goingover budget and not knowing how to pay for the difference. Before youstart choosing your venue, flowers and vendors, sit down together andprioritize what’s most important. Knowing what’s essential will help youdecide where you can save on other details.

3. Shop early for your dress. Shop early to avoid feeling rushed intomaking a decision. While many brides walk into a store and leave withtheir dream dress on the same day, for some, it’s a slower process. Shopat least six to eight months in advance so you can try on various stylesand see what looks best on you. Be sure to leave time for alterations toensure that you have the perfect dress for your big day. This is a time inyour life when you can try on many exquisite, figure-flattering dresses,so enjoy it. Have fun instead of rushing.

4. Get friends and family involved. Choose a few trustworthy andwell-organized friends or family members and assign them specifictasks to assist you with the wedding. Having others involved will makethem more excited about your big day as well.

Top Five Reasons ForHiring a Wedding PlannerOne of the most joyous occasions in life is a wedding, a time

when two people in love exchange those powerful words, “I Do”,which binds them legally as husband and wife. Although an excit-ing time of life, planning a wedding is also a very stressful time. Forthat reason, many people have discovered the benefits of hiring aprofessional coordinator to ensure everything comes together as itshould. In this article, we are providing you with the top five rea-sons for hiring a wedding planner so you can enjoy your weddingwith much less stress.

Stress-Free The number one reason for hiring a wedding planner is to dra-

matically reduce the level of stress. Every wedding, even the bestplanned will have challenges. Unfortunately, when the bride and/orgroom are the ones trying to handle all the obstacles along witheverything else, they feel completely overwhelmed and suddenly, the enjoyment of wedding planning is out the door. With a profes-sional planner, they supervise all of the events associated with yourwedding so you no longer have to sweat the small (or big) stuff. Thatmeans everything from the delivery of the flowers, to the set up ofthe cake, to the limos arriving on time is taken care of for you.

Creativity A good wedding planner will have been in the business for years.

Because of this, they have coordinated hundreds of weddings andcan take ideas to share with you for your upcoming wedding. Thatmeans instead of a wedding cake that is three layers of chocolate, you could end up with something tropical, one layer of pina coladacake, one of red raspberry, and a third of coconut cream. The pointis that by hiring a wedding planner, your ideas can be expoundedon, enhancing your wedding.

Precise Detailing For all weddings, there are so many small details that often, things

get overlooked. One of the frustrations for the bride and groom istrying to maintain all of those details so the wedding goes off with-out a hitch. An experienced wedding planner knows all about thesmall details and has an outstanding ability for keeping track ofthem. He or she would sit down with the bride and/or groom andgo over each aspect of the wedding, covering every possible angleso nothing is missed.

Insider Information A huge benefit in hiring a wedding planner is that they know who

the best of the best is. If you want a DJ, they can provide you withseveral top choices. If you want a catered meal, they can tell youexactly which caterer serves fabulous food at an affordable price, orif you want a horse drawn carriage to take you to the reception, theyknow who to call. For you, that means no time is wasted makingphone call after phone call, only to walk away frustrated and emptyhanded.

Discounts Finally, hiring a wedding planner is an excellent idea if you want

to save money. Because these professionals have connections withall types of people in the wedding industry, they can typically passon excellent discounts to you. Keep in mind that does not affect thequality of the service, just the price.

A lasting memoryMany couples decide that they would like to have

their wedding day captured on video but many havefears that it will be too obtrusive. Providing that theytake care to select the right video company, they willfind that their fears were completely unfounded andthat they didn’t notice their videographer at all.

A professional videographer will be unobtrusiveand will fit in with you and your guests – they won’ttry to take over your day.

Levels in videographers vary considerably; it istherefore essential that you request to see a sampleof their work.

This will give a good indication of the picture andsound quality, technical ability, editing and filmingstyles. However, make sure that the sample is thework of the videographer who will be filming yourwedding.

It is also a good idea to see letters of thanks/refer-ence from previous customers, this will show youhow they fitted in with the wedding party and guests.

Good videographers are sought after. It is thereforeadvisable to book early (about one year in advance)to ensure that you get the videographer you want. Toavoid any confusion, always get written confirmationof your booking confirming the date and time of yourwedding.

A good wedding video will provide you with atreasured memory of your special day to be watchedby generations to come.

Picking the PerfectEngagement Ring

(NewsUSA) - Your fiancée will wear herengagement ring every day for the rest ofher life, so choosing the perfect ring is cru-cial. How do you know if you are buyingthe right ring?

- Look at her existing jewelry wardrobe. The jewelry your partner has will give youhints about her personal style. If she ownsa lot of sterling silver or white gold, thenshe is a cool-metal person, making a whitegold, platinum or palladium ring an idealchoice. If she has more yellow metals, thenshe is a warm-metal woman, so stick to yel-low gold or rose gold.

- Figure out her personal style. Does yourfiancée-to-be like traditional or non-tradi-tional designs? If she prefers bold and funkyjewelry, she probably doesn’t want a veryclassic engagement ring.

- When in doubt, ask one of her friends.Find a trustworthy friend who knows herstyle. He or she will be able to get a lot ofinformation that you can’t obtain withoutsounding suspicious.

(NC) Whoever says that a bride must wear white isn’t aware that themost popular trend in wedding gowns this year is anything but tradition-al. While white, ivory and champagne gowns will always be a classicand popular choice among brides, coloured dresses are starting to takecentre stage, as more celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, AnneHathaway and Jessica Biel recently chose pink as their signature wed-ding colour. Canadian brides who want to look equally pretty in pinkhave their share of options, such as bright splashes of hot pink found insashes, soft and barely-there blush dresses, and stunning ball gowns thatare drenched in rosy hues.

As weddings con-tinue to be a creative, personal expression ofa bride’s special day,the desire to make herdress as unique as sheis has never beenmore important.

A subtle shade thatmakes a daring state-ment is sterling grey,an emerging colourthat lends itself well to‘winter wonderland’themed ceremoniesand receptions.

Pre-Wedding Beauty Tips for the Bride(NewsUSA) - You want everything to be picture perfect for your wedding, including

your smile. But like everything else about your big day, that perfect smile could requiresome work ahead of time. In fact, experts suggest starting your entire beauty regimen sixmonths before the wedding. Here’s a complete pre-wedding beauty checklist.

* Makeup: Women with warm skin tones look best in makeup with pink, coral, peach, amber, brown and red with yellow undertones. If you have a cool skin tone, choose pink, berry, lilac, mauve or red with blue undertones.

* Skin: Make your face glow with a good cleansing program. Use a cleanser that’sappropriate for your skin type in the morning, makeup remover and cleanser at night anda daily moisturizer. Use a gentle facial scrub once a week.

* Hair: If you’re planning to change your hairstyle or color, experiment several monthsbefore the wedding so you have time to correct any mistakes.

* Nails: If you’re a nail-biter, get weekly manicures to keep your nails healthy. Plan yourlast manicure a couple of days before the big day.

How to dress at a destination wedding

(NC) It is cold here, but it’s warm and sultrythere. No wonder your favourite coupledecided to take everyone to a sunny destina-tion for their wedding vows. But how doesone choose just the right clothes for that?

Let the invitation be your guide. Is it ablack-tie affair in Italy or a beach-side cere-mony in Costa Rica? Wear a long dress if thewedding is black-tie, a short cocktail dressthat hits around the knee for a more tradi-tional wedding, or a flowing maxi dress andsparkly flat sandals if you’re lucky enough toenjoy some sand and sun.

Dress for the time of day. Morning wed-dings tend to be more casual, so chose attirethat is light-weight and flowing. Opt for morestructured dresses that feature glitz and glam-our for evening or cocktail hour affairs.

Be inspired by location. Not sure whichcolour to wear? Is it okay to wearwhite on the beach? Is it okay to wearblack to a cocktail reception? Goneare the days where guests have toavoid black or white. The key is tonever upstage the bride, so if youwant to wear white to a beach-side,go ahead. Just make sure it has a bitof pattern or a unique silhouette.

Think about what packs well. Skipdry clean-only dresses that wrinkleeasily. Instead, opt for matte jerseythat packs well or choose natural fab-rics that can be ironed or steamed atthe hotel so you will look great in allthe photos, no matter the location.

(NewsUSA) - Some brides-to-be might findit hard to think beyond the intense planningthat a wedding requires.

But beyond the pomp and circumstance ofthe big day, it’s important to think ahead tomergers – not the corporate kind, but themerging of styles and décor to set up a homethe bride and groom will both love.

Forget Mars and Venus. Men are from theplanet of mismatched furniture and floor cov-erings, while women accessorize their homewith as much care and finesse as they dotheir wardrobes.

Ideally, decorating a first home togetherbegins with the furniture and accessoriesnear and dear to both the bride and groom.

But if a bride-to-be can’t live with herfiancé’s 1970s thrift store coffee table andorange bean bag chair, chances are he won’tbe thrilled with her antique oak hope chestand ornately carved sleigh bed.

Can these two conflicting schemes co-existafter the couple has crossed the threshold?

* Setting the tone. Choose a color schemetogether, and creatively arrange furniture andaccessories around it.

Find a neutral ground to meld his love ofearth tones, for example, with her love of softfabrics. A mélange of colors and fabrics – oneverything from comforters to windowvalances – will inspire looks ideal for bothMr. and Mrs.

* Splish, splash. Create an understated, clean look in the bath for him, but add acces-sories with a dash of color to satisfy a bride-to-be’s lively outlook. Bold shower curtains, wastebaskets and vanity items inject fresh-ness and personality.

* Boudoir basics. Usher in a new homewith a fresh set of bedding; couples can lookfor a variety of styles and colors designed tobe dressed up or left as is for a classic look.

Decorative pillows, shams, coverlets andthrows complete the look and are a great wayfor wedding guests to add to the couple’scozy love nest.

* Staples of style. If he loves a more mod-ern style, but she wants a retro feel, furnitureoptions in leather, fine fabrics, hardwood andwicker can readily mesh both personalities.

* Merging moods. She’s a homebody; helikes beaches and picnics. For bedrooms andliving rooms, couples can combine sensibili-ties with bedding and furniture lines that

bring the outside in, and vice versa. Try mixing a table from one line with a

chair from another – mixing it up is a playfulway to punch up the personality of a room.

Just like in the corporate world, mergerscan either run smoothly or be a headache.

By considering the sensibilities the brideand groom share – rather than just the differ-ences – creating a first home together can beone merger full of fringe benefits.
