Modern day romance:What to do when Prince Charming arrives with his kids

stepmother wart? Is thatpossible?

According to the latestAmerican children statis-tics, it had better be. Thirty-seven percent of house-holds are made up of blend-ed families.

Like most at 23, AshleyNiette dreamed of meetingthat special someone andbeginning a family. PrinceCharming arrived on timeas she had hoped, but withhim also came Taylor, 6, andGage, 4.

Ashley had an unspokenrule about not allowing her-self to fall for a man whoalready had children." D a t i n gs o m e o n ewith chil-dren alwaysmade me ner-vous," shesays. "I did-n't really likekids. I wasn'tcomfortablea r o u n dthem."

A s h l e ymet JoeyBerry onenight out on the town. Theymade small talk, whichincluded his children, theloves of his life. "He didn'ttry to hide it at all. He wasvery upfront about hiskids," says Ashley.

Ashley went home, neverexpecting to see him again.But, low and behold, thevery next day he and hischildren showed up at theAlligator Farm where sheworked. She was shocked.

She was impressed by theway Joey tended to his kids.It was obvious that he was afantastic dad. She decidedone date wouldn't hurt any-thing...

On their first date, Joeytook her to meet his mother.Ashley was a little takenaback. "I'd never met any-one's mom on a first date, sothat was different, too," shesays.

Joey and Ashley startedcasually going out, includ-ing the children when itwas Joey's turn to havethem. Within a month or so,

Taylor and Gage were ask-ing for Ashley to comealong on family outings.

A defining moment intheir relationship waswhen Joey met Ashley'sgrandmother, Vergie Niette.Ashley knew the time hadcome to decide once and forall whether or not shewould break her "no kids"policy.

"He was real sweet withmy grandmother. Sheraised me so that meant alot. When he came aroundmy family he was real com-fortable, like he had beencoming around forever."

She chose not to allowtwo great kids to stand inthe way of true love.

Instead, shebegan admir-ing Joey forbeing such ana m a z i n gfather. Shenever had arelationshipwith her ownfather, sowatching himinteract solovingly withhis children

Taylor and Gage. After ayear of dating, the couplebecame engaged. Ashleyknew that more childrenwould be in their future, butshe vowed to always treather stepchildren as herown. "I never want to makea child feel unwanted, theway I felt."

Joey and Ashley weremarried Sept. 15, 2009. Theywelcomed their third child,Morgan, Oct. 8, 2010. Ashleysays, "Taylor and Gage wereso excited when they foundout I was pregnant. Theywanted to be at the hospitalfor all of the excitement."

Morgan is now 15 monthsold, Taylor is 10 and Gage is8. "There's no jealousy atall. They love Morgan," saysAshley.

Taylor and Gage are verywell mannered and maturefor their ages, so Ashleyadmits she got lucky in thatregard.

She advises those aboutto become a stepmother to

try to be a friend. "Taylorand Gage have a motheralready, so I don't try to beone. I'll step in and disci-pline if their dad isn'taround, but if he is, he doesthe parenting."

Ashley also emphasizesthe importance of speakingcalmly and rationally withthem, though sometimes it'sdifficult.

She recalls a time whenshe was trying to calmlyexplain to Gage why hittinghis sister upside of the headwith a baseball bat was abad idea. Looking backlaughing, she says, "Whenhe asked me why, I told him,'Because if you do she willdie.'"

Though holiday breaksare sometimes overwhelm-ing when her husband is atwork, Ashley says hergreatest struggle as a step-mother is not being able tokeep Taylor and Gage asoften as she'd like. "I want to

include them in things, butI can't when they're withtheir mom. I know they'renot my children, but theyare my family and I likehaving them around."

Ashley couldn't imagineher life without Joey and

the children. She didn't justget what she prayed for, shegot more.

"Keep an open mind," shesays. "You never know whoyou might meet."

Beau Jardin is the ideal setting for an intimate ceremony.

Does your pastor requirepre-marital counseling? It isa part of the process for mar-riage in many churches. I'mgoing to share some of thesecrets of this pre-marital

counseling. My first sessionbegins with two points:

My first point is, "don't doit." This is quite a way ofallowing the couple to tellme about their relationshipand why marriage is some-thing they are committed todo. That will lead to my sec-ond point, which is, "elope!"They then explain to me whythey want a big wedding.

Our two biggest fears ashumans are dying and pub-lic speaking. Guess what awedding with 300 guests

qualifies as? With all the pro-cessing done and the oftenvery nervous couple stand-ing in front of me, I lean inand whisper "See, I told youto elope." When they smile orlaugh, I know I have relaxedthem and we can proceedwith the ceremony in a dig-nified fashion. They mighteven enjoy the wedding cere-mony; although I haveNEVER heard a couple tellme how much they "enjoyed"the actual ceremony. This isa helpful hint as you plan foryour wedding day.

My pre-marital counsel-ing is more about getting toknow the couple. I don't askprobing questions or givenpersonality tests. But I do lis-ten for issues that the couplewill reveal if you simplywatch and listen for a fewminutes.

So if you want a warmand fuzzy wedding, with arelaxed atmosphere comesee me. If you are havingsome problems as a datingcouple, you might thinktwice or three times aboutproceeding with the wholewedding thing.

If you are having commu-

nication problems marriagewill not fix them. If you don'ttalk and laugh together, thismight be a clue to you aboutyour future. If you have everfelt your potential spousedoesn't really listen to you ortake you seriously when youspeak, then marriage willnot fix that. If there aretraits that you have experi-enced in your potentialspouse, getting married willnot suddenly make them bet-ter.

The other thing you needto hear is that if you areabout to marry a "fixer up"project, just move on. Peoplewill not give up their habitsbecause they are suddenlymarried to you. All these fallunder the communicationcategory.

If youcan't talkabout moneyand financeshonestly or ifyou are hav-ing financialissues mar-riage will notfix that. It willtend to makem a t t e r sworse. Twopeople can live as cheaply asone, but for only half thetime. Getting marriedbecause it makes financialsense says to me, you guysneed to move on. Have youtalked about work andmoney and finances?Because what you haveobserved about the otherwhile dating will not changejust because you stood infront of someone and said, "I

do."If you think that mar-

riage means that you shouldgive up all your friends andonly have each other, I sug-gest you go ahead and getthat divorce attorney'sname, and the converse isalso true. If you think mar-

riage means youwill not have tochange yourr e l a t i o n s h i p swith some ofyour friends, youare about tomake a mistake.Are you commu-nicating, really?

So what am Itelling you?

First, don't do it! Second, ifyou must; elope.

Here's the truth, most ofus minister types want yourwedding day to be special foryou, but we are more inter-ested in you having a mar-riage in which you live outthe words, "for better, forworse, for richer, for poorer,in sickness and in health, tolove and to cherish, untildeath do us part."

1. The Power of WE. Like leaving home for college, mil-itary service or moving away for work, marriage is one ofthe most significant events in a person's life. It fundamen-tally changes the way we relate to just about everything. Itturns ME upside down to become WE. How do you imagineyour life being turned upside down?

2. Individuals Together. We still never lose completelyour individual distinctness, interests and needs. Marriage,and the wedding ceremony, is not like flipping a switch in adark room where everything is now completely different.It's more like a gradual growing together that takes placeover time. There are all kinds of new questions that we'venever had to wrestle with before: Do we have to do every-thing together? What about personal time? Are we going tolive close to one spouse's family or the other's? How willthat help or hinder our own relationship? How are we goingto merge and manage family holiday traditions? How arewe going to decide how much money to spend on whatkinds of things? Hint: Adopt a budget right away...and stickto it. Review and revise every January.

3. Cultivation. Marriage is like a garden that requirescultivation. We all like the harvest, but we have to dedicatethe time and resources a good harvest requires. So we cul-tivate a peaceful homelife. We weed out the things thatdevour precious resources and that do harm. And we fertil-ize generously.

4. Vows. Vows are very powerful things. But we don'thave a lot of real experience with them in our culture. Theycan provide great stability and open huge doors for greaterhappiness. Talk about what you're vowing to do ... and notdo. What kind of help is there in keeping your vow?

5. Hope and Trust. John Maxwell, the leadership guru,says this: "When you make a commitment, you create hope.When you keep a commitment, you create trust." Our livesdesperately need more of both of these. Hope and trust arethe fundamental building blocks of a good marriage. Weshould protect them at all costs. Talk about the connectionbetween hope and trust. Why are these so important for anyperson?

6. Forgiveness. There's a real need for daily forgivenessin marriage, probably more so than in any other relation-ship. But when we're headed towards marriage, we're stillin that rose-colored glasses stage and can't really see ourpartner's shortcomings, so we gloss over them. It's not soeasy later on. One pre-marital counselor told couples thatthey needed to go out and get in a big fight before they couldprogress further, just so that they would learn the power offorgiveness in husband-wife relationships. There will bedisagreements. When we fight, it's got to be fair. And thenwe need lots of forgiveness.

7. Long-Term Goals. What's your dream job look like?Your dream home? Where do you want to live? What do youwant to be known for? What kind of big things would youlike to accomplish? These need to be given some kind ofvoice. Big dreams that are ignored or get crushed over timewill bring intimacy and a marriage to a sad end.

8. Children and Family. The baby carriage isn't usuallyfront and center when we're moving towards marriage, or

even a close relationship with a potential spouse. But likethe move from ME to WE, it turns everything upside downagain. Couples have got to be honest with each other, notjust saying what they think their partner wants to hear.How many? How soon? How close together? Who's going towash all the clothes, tuck them in at night, change the dia-pers and take them to school in the morning? Huge respon-sibility. Even greater blessing!

9. Faith and Church Life. There was a time that folkswere expected to marry within their own religious tradi-tion. Not so anymore. But this isn't something to beignored. The newly wed couple needs to make a faith andchurch choice that respects their family upbringing, butalso is their own. They are leaving their original familiesand creating a new family. Make the decision before mar-riage where to worship together and stick with that deci-sion together. If a change is needed down the road, makethe change together. A good church provides for friendship,support in the tough times and the chance to help otherswhen they need it.

10. The power of THREE. King Solomon the Wiserecords this gem in Ecclesiastes 4:12: "A cord of threestrands is not quickly broken." The three strands are these:husband, wife and God. The most important strand, the onethat saves the cord, and the marriage, is God. A couple maytry to hold it all together, but the one that's most importantis trusting faith and forgiveness in God. If you're marriagecord includes this third strand, tying the knot has greatpromise!

"To me, the flowers make the event. Linens and other décorcan help set the stage, but the flowers are a way to incorpo-rate the season and add smell, color and much more."

Q: In your client-centered business, you've probably seenmost everything. Have you ever had any really funny experi-ences?

A: I have had many humorous experiences. I have alwayssaid that realty TV has nothing on us...everything from dressmishaps to music. But, regardless I'm always able to managethe situation.

Q: Has any moment been so moving that it brought you totears?

A: Many times you build a relationship while workingwith a bride, couple or family. You are planning one of themost special days of their lives. It is natural to become emo-tional. Still, after over 200 weddings, I get teary-eyed at everyceremony.

Q: What advice would you give to someone newly engagedand about to begin planning her wedding?

A: My first advice would be to take it slow. Consult with aplanner. Most initial consultations are free and it gives youlots of helpful advice before proceeding with planning.

Q: Any last minute advice? A: Enjoy your engagement. Make it easy on yourself. It is

a special time for the two of you.

Q: After all of this time, is wedding planning still some-thing you enjoy?

A: It is truly a passion. It is hard work but I feel it is sorewarding!

riage is to couples who've been married formore than 50 years. Most likely, they won'thave sympathy for those who complainabout their spouse after a mere 15-20 years.

Most "marriage professionals" agree on afew basic principals such as "never go to bedangry" and "don't take one another for grant-ed." But, this tab's star couple, Coolidge andLillie Mae Durr of Robeline, added a fewmore. They have been married for 67 years.

Lillie Mae says the secret to a lasting mar-riage is commitment, pure and simple.

"You make a vow before God and that's it.It's not just an agreement. It's a commitment

to God and each other."To couples about to begin their lives togeth-

er, Lillie Mae says, "It's a matter of endurance.You have to take the good with the bad. You'renot always going to find it smooth running.Trust in God as you should in everything else."

She and her son were recently discussingthe beauty of the song, "I'm Drinking frommy Saucer 'cause my Cup has Overflowed."

Lillie Mae says that song exemplifies herand her husband's life. "We're reaping betterthan we sowed. It's all been such a blessing."

Coolidge and Lillie Mae have four chil-dren, seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Q: What do you love most about your job?A: This job gives me the chance to meet people from all

walks of life. On a daily basis, I have a chance to find trueappreciation for people who were perfect strangers to methe day before. I work for two incredibly kind and respect-ful people who take pride in their bed and breakfast prop-erties. They allow me to excel at what I do best. They valuethe job I do for our guests, for them and their company. Ican't imagine doing anything else.

In 2008-09 and 2009-10, the Queen Anne was listed amongthe Top 12 Inns Worldwide. In 2009-2010 it was voted amongthe Top 10 Inn's Overall Worldwide.
