KBB Music Festival 2014

The KBB Music Festival is a celebration of youth music that has taken place since 1983. It has grown significantly since its inception, and in attending the concert at Westlake Boys on Sunday 10 August we can all be assured that music development for our young people is in great hands.

Our Chamber Orchestra played Sondheim’s Green Finch and Linnet Bird with soloist Kelly Kim delivering a superb vocal performance. They also presented a beautiful version of Appalachian Spring (Aaron Copland) arranged by Ryan Youens. Shelagh Thomson, Performing Arts Director, was delighted with their third placing – congratulations to the Chamber Orchestra as the competition was very intense.

Congratulations also to our Concert Band and their leader Elsa Holliday. The band consists of a very young group of students who won silver and improved significantly on their last year’s performance.

Women2Watch Assembly In a packed Sports Centre, three of our most outstanding young alumni were recognised by the School for their outstanding achievements beyond school. The Women2Watch Awards recognise outstanding young women who completed their education at Diocesan School for Girls to Year 13. A Women2Watch Committee planned the awards ceremony. She is a successful barrister specialising in employment law. Jane introduced our three special guests: Rachel Patching is a highly esteemed film producer who has a passion for telling people’s stories. She particularly chooses stories that will make a difference to the lives of others.

Rosalie Fisher is a doctor specialising in oncology at Auckland Hospital. Her work in making a difference to the lives of cancer patients is rated as world class.

Kelly Bleakley is the youngest head of the New Zealand Scout movement ever appointed. Beside her full time position at Fonterra leading the Milk in Schools Programme, Kelly is fully immersed in leading and developing the Scout movement to engage and build great young people.

Rachel, Rosalie and Kelly are outstanding young women who reflect the values and contribution to the world that they acquired as part of their Diocesan education. We especially thank the Women2Watch team and Ms Jane Latimer for their fantastic contribution to organising the assembly.

St Peter’s Cambridge sports exchange

On a fairly brisk Wednesday morning, a powhiri in the Sports Centre welcomed the teams from St Peter’s in Cambridge for our annual sports exchange. It was a great day for Diocesan teams who cleaned up the overall competition with a clean sweep in the netball. We were delighted to win the shield for 2014 which was presented to the School by Beatrice Meadowcroft, the 2014 Sport Prefect. Thank you to the Sport Department, coaches, umpires, parents and girls for the spirited competition and another great exchange for our sport teams.

Twice exceptional gifted students – a presentation by Dr Kate Niederer

Thursday 25 September at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm) Western Springs Community Hall, 956 Great North Road, Western Springs

Twice exceptional children are those who are both gifted and have a specific learning need. While they can be highly able, they may struggle within the education system as the work they produce often fails to represent what they are truly capable of. This can lead to feelings of anger, despair and a lowered self-concept. These children are at serious risk of underachievement, which can worsen as they progress through the schooling system. In this talk Kate will discuss what it means to be twice exceptional, the characteristics of twice exceptional children, and how teachers and parents can work together to support them.

Tickets are on sale at $10 per person or $15 for a family.Bookings: [email protected]

Carpark uniform sale

A second hand uniform sale will be held in the carpark on 23 September from 1 – 3:30pm.Click here for more details.

These funds will be added to next year’s total to fund the project undertaken by the 2015 Senior School Service Trip. Junior High and Senior Schools

Juntoku School visit For the first two weeks this term we have hosted our Japanese sister school from Tokyo, Juntoku Girls’ High School. Twelve students became ‘Dio girls’ and were hosted by Dio families. During the day, a special programme was organised with activities that ranged from cooking hamburgers for lunch, to trying their hand at Maori stick games and experiencing Kiwiana in the form of pineapple lumps and jaffas! They were a delightful group who gave everything a go. Their English skills improved and the bond between the two schools, which is in its 26th year, was further strengthened. Many of the Dio girls who were hosting the Juntoku students are now planning to visit them in Japan on the school trip next year.

Maths Week 18 - 22 August

Next week Dio will celebrate Maths Week with a variety of activities. Each day there will be a Problem of the Day for Years 5/6, Years 7/8 and Years 9/10 - girls are encouraged to try their problem solving skills! On Monday and Tuesday Years 6, 7 and 8 will attend a World of Maths Workshop. This is a variety of hands-on Maths problems that they will solve as a group. On Wednesday and Thursday there is an Open Day for Years 7 and 8 Maths classes. Your daughter’s teacher will have contacted you about the arrangements for this.

On Friday we have our annual Dio Mathex Competition. This is run as a House Competition, with each House entering three teams of four girls at each Year level – 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. It is always a lot of fun and certainly challenges their problem solving skills as well as their running ability!

Top chef has a taste of Heston at Dio

Chef Paul Jobin joined a senior food technology class on Monday afternoon, tasting and giving feedback and advice to the girls who were working on their ‘Be Heston’ project. He spoke briefly about his career before spending time discussing the dishes with individual students – pictured here with Year 12 student Victoria Belcher.

Sport

From the Director of Sport

Welcome back Brittany Robertson and Katie Glynn - our Commonwealth Games representatives. Congratulations to Brittany on her 10th place in the Artistic Gymnastics competition and to Katie for her Bronze medal efforts with the Black Sticks.

Last week we said farewell to Ana Patel who has moved on to NZ Cricket to work on a programme for schools leading up to the Cricket World Cup. Ana has been a wonderful ambassador for Sport DIO over the years and she will be missed. It has been wonderful having her back in the office after her maternity leave and although we are sad to see her go we wish her well for the future and know that our loss is NZ Cricket’s gain.

With Ana’s departure we welcome Angie Winstanley-Smith to the Sport Office. Angie is a former age group British champion swimmer and participated in the London Olympics with the Great Britain water polo team. In April she won Most Valuable Player and the Gold medal with England at the official Commonwealth Water Polo Championships. She played professionally for 10 years across Europe, winning five French Championships. In addition to her outstanding career as an athlete she is also an accomplished coach having coached both swimming and water polo for over 10 years and winning several national titles with her regional teams. Angie has already joined our team and is planning to work on water polo development and a range of other sports.

On Wednesday this week we had our annual St Peter’s exchange. We began with a rousing powhiri that set the scene for a great day of competition. Sports played were water polo, netball, football, basketball and hockey. We won ten games and lost three to win overall points and take the shield for the third year in a row. Awesome work girls! It was a spectacular day with some wonderful skill demonstrated from our teams. I was proud to be associated with Team DIO.

Kia Kaha for the business end of the winter season.

Cycling The weekend saw the Diocesan cycling team compete in the fourth of seven Auckland Secondary School Team Time Trials. After some bad luck hit a number of teams over the first three races, all teams were focussed on improving their positions in the standings leading into the business end of the season.

Senior A rode what can only be called a near perfect ride, setting the fastest time ever by a Diocesan cycling team around the 16km course, subsequently riding to a gutsy second place overall. Junior A also produced a season-best time, passing a number of other teams on their way to third place in the Junior Girls’ category.

What was most pleasing to see was all the girls enjoying the success they have worked so hard for and at the same time taking on board what they had learnt in the recent Sports Psychology session (put on as part of Dio’s High Performance Programme). To see all of them during their post-race de brief filling in their self-reflection sheets was a real positive and a huge step towards achieving the group’s goal of being the best they can be at the Nationals in September.

Dio takes out inaugural Auckland Futsul Tournament Futsul, or indoor football, is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. This past weekend, Auckland hosted the NZF Futsul Roadshow, a three-day festival that included exhibition matches from the Futsul Whites team and the inaugural College U-15 Girls’ Tournament. In addition, three Dio girls (Michaela Buckley, Kitty Greensill and Georgia Leach) were invited to attend a training session with the Futsal Whites coach.

All College teams played with surprising skill and energy, and the girls fought hard for wins over Baradene and Selwyn, but then suffered a 5-1 loss to MAGS in the final round. However, they had done enough to qualify for the final, and changed their game plan to achieve a tight but exhilarating 2-1 victory over MAGS in the final.

Special mention must be made of Michaela Buckley, who was Golden Boot for the tournament, and scored two stunning goals in our come-from-behind win in the final, but this was only possible based upon a true team effort. Kitty Greensill, (who had greatest number of assists), Georgia Leach (who unselfishly played in her least favourite position of goalkeeper for most of the games), Aimee Fairbairn, Amy Hill and Winter Brown all contributed hugely to the team result.

1st XI Football fundraising In preparation for the Premier Girls’ Football Tournament in Taupo this year, the team are getting into fundraising over the next couple of weeks. They will be selling raffle tickets and the prizes include: Holiday Inn Accommodation (Airport) Package, L.J.L. Paris Consultation Package, Pure Fiji Pamper Pack, Skellerup red gumboots – ‘His & Hers’ pairs, $100 Gina’s Italian Kitchen voucher and a hamper from the team. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. The team will be out and about selling tickets or you can purchase them from the Sports Office.

Thank you to the following businesses for their support: Holiday Inn Airport, L.J.L. Paris Hair Designers, About Face, Skellerup and Gina’s Italian Kitchen.

Hockey selection Congratulations to Maddison Dowe who has just been named in the NZ Hockey Tiger Turf U-18 squad. Players in this squad have been identified as part of Hockey New Zealand’s development potential.

Lacrosse

The 2014 Auckland Secondary Schools’ Lacrosse Championships were held on Friday 8 August. Two inspired teams headed to Avondale racecourse to represent Diocesan at the event. Both teams played in tough divisions and achieved some great results.

Dio 2 celebrated a very impressive 6-3 win over Avondale and Dio 1 claimed a very impressive and well deserved 3-1 win over Mt Albert. When it was all said and done Dio 2 finished 11th and Dio 1 finished 3rd. Two great results for Diocesan lacrosse!

This result puts Dio 1 into the nationals in two weeks’ time where the girls will be ready for even tougher competition.

Congratulations and thank you to team coaches and managers for your wonderful efforts.

Winter Water Polo Festival

Last weekend saw the first big event of the year for Year 7&8 water polo, the 2014 Winter Water Polo Festival held across all Auckland pools. Teams from all over the North Island were present including all three Diocesan teams. The teams performed very commendably all through the tournament and the girls should be proud of their efforts.

Diocesan Red was extremely committed and managed to show great spirit in a tough division.Diocesan Blue showed great improvement and fine skill finishing 5th in the girls’ division. Diocesan White was determined and showed great ability, claiming 2nd place in the girls’ division.

Congratulations to Dio White, runners-up in the girls’ division:Ella Barrett, Anna Casey, Polly Davies, Matilda Foley, Madeleine Gault, Claudia Monkhouse, Samantha Robinson, Eleanor Spillane, Zita Sumich, Alice Waldow and winner of an Outstanding Player Award, Jessica Shorter-Robinson.

Best of luck to all teams for the rest of the season.

Music and Performing Arts

KBB Competition 2014

This year has seen a steady and continued growth in the instrumental programme here at Dio. The annual KBB Festival, for our large ensembles, is the most fiercely contested festival for all secondary schools in the region. This event runs over five days and is a huge undertaking for both students and staff. This is the biggest large ensemble competition in the country and the Awards Ceremony at Westlake Boys was packed at the weekend. The event was held at Westlake Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools due to the building work in progress at Holy Trinity Cathedral. Everyone missed the fantastic acoustics and familiarity of this venue – next year we will once again be back in the newly refurbished Cathedral.

This year we had nearly 100 girls participating in three categories: Symphony, Chamber Orchestra and Concert Band. They all provided some serious competition for the bigger schools and came away with Silver Awards.

Our Symphony Orchestra, although small in comparison to Westlake, Macleans and Rangitoto, was rhythmic, focussed and full of energy. We had the audience break into spontaneous applause after our toe-tapping, fast and furious rendition of Far and Away.

Concert Band, under the directorship of the very enthusiastic and hardworking Elsa Holliday, really excelled themselves. Mrs Holliday and the girls did a magnificent job with an ever-expanding group of younger and very keen players. Their challenging but fun repertoire won them a coveted Silver Award. This was an amazing achievement after last year’s disappointment and everyone was very proud of the girls.

Each group must prepare a 30 minute programme - and be responsible for their own stage management within this time. Our girls, under the amazingly competent leadership of Year 13 student leaders, were truly professional and extremely organised. We were very lucky to have the assistance of the wonderful Mariko Windecker and Ashley Doo from last year’s programme. And a very big ‘thank you’ also to German assistant, Fabian Prolinghuer.

Congratulations to all the girls who have worked so hard on difficult repertoire over the last term. The standard of the top performing groups was staggeringly impressive – from Jazz Bands and Concert Bands to Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. The Dio Chamber Orchestra was chosen to perform in the Gala Concert as one of the top four Chamber Orchestras in the region – along with Westlake, St Cuthbert’s and Macleans.

For a small school we have seriously punched above our weight and those in the music world have noticed and commented. All great publicity for our Dio community!

Thank you to all who have supported the 100 girls who have been seriously involved in the KBB Festivalover the last week.

Kids Sing 2014

Last week saw our two competing choirs, Chapel Choir from the Junior School and Virtuoso Voce from the Junior High School perform magnificently in the Gala Concerts at the Town Hall.

Chapel Choir, under the skilled and meticulous directorship of their wonderful Year 5 teacher, Mehernaz Padiwalla, performed an exciting and very polished programme. Complete with very engaging actions, they premiered their newly commissioned song by David Gordon, the very catchy Why animals stick their heads through fences. This Year 5 and 6 choir was outstanding and they deservedly brought home the three top awards: Gold, The Best Overall Choir and Best Performance of a New Zealand work.

Shona McIntrye-Bull’s Virtuoso Voce, our Year 7and 8 choir, produced a stunning and very mature sound, with the test piece Moon and the premiere performance of Y12 student Grace Brebner’s Shadows of the Wind. This performance was the highlight of the entire session and Virtuoso Voce were once again awarded Gold this year.

Well done to all our choristers and their very dedicated directors.

Thanks to all academic and support staff, parents and grandparents who have attended performances at KBB and Kids Sing over the last week. It is impossible to run an effective and successful extra-curricular music programme without your support.

Andre Worsnop is doing a fantastic job with our Facebook page and the youtube channel - he posts up links ‘hot off the press’ and this is great publicity for the School. Click here to see more.

Here are some of our award-winning KBB performances – we will get the Chamber Music NZ winners up when Radio NZ release the audio.

Tea and Tiny Cakes – Fundraiser for St Cecilia Singers On Sunday 17 August, our St Cecilia Singers will be doing a concert in the Junior School Hall at 4.30pm to perform their programme to an audience. Click here for more information.

Big Sing Finale 2014 Next week our elite choir St Cecilia Singers and the newly formed Dio/Dilworth choir Divinitus are competing in the Big Sing Finale over three days.

Both choirs will be performing at the Raye Freedman Centre on Wednesday 20 August at 5.00pm along with Epsom Girls, St Cuthbert’s and Dilworth. This is a final run-through for all of these wonderful choirs before they compete in the heats on Thursday.

Anyone can watch the performances live from the Town Hall in Auckland on their computer, tablet or internet capable phone. The coverage will work on a range of devices and will be streamed in HD.We wish all of our girls the very best in this year’s Finale.

The website currently only holds clips for newborns to turning three (the first three years). There are over 50 short clips on anything from eating and sleeping, to health and wellbeing and dealing with challenges, to the six key principles to raise happy healthy kids – something that is relevant to all ages. The introduction is from Prof Sir Peter Gluckman about the importance of the first three years setting a child up for life. Click here for mor info.
