Thank you for
all
the good
letters
and cards you have been sending
our
way
since our arrival in
PNG. We
appreciate your remembering us
with
letters
and prayers^
We
are back in
Madang
now getting ready
for
which starts in a few days. The SIL jungle camp
is
held
on top of a mountain about 10 miles out of Madang. This training will
last for -fqgr months,
with
the
first two being at
the
camp
and the
last
two-montTfs Geing
in a
village
out
in the bush. Please be
in
prayer for us during this time of further
training.
Our shipment has
not arrived from the states yet with much of the equipment
we
had
planned to use during this time. However, with borrowing
some
things
from our good teammates here and with what we brought with us
we
feel
we will manage
,
I t will
be
good
training for
us.. We
enjoyed the
weeks we spent out in Bunapas and made many friends there.
I t
was a
good
experience for us,
Wes
made
two language surveys
with
David
Pryor while
wti
were there. The whole family
visited
two
other
vil
lages
which have
asked for a
translator. One village,
Azoa,
is locat
ed 45 minutes up-river
from Bunapas
and the other
village, Kabuk, is
located 60 minutes down-river from Bunapas . Both of these would be
good locations as far as accessibility^ However, there are other
vil
lages we
must visi t and more language surveys to be
made
before
we
can
make
a
decision.
We
felt
a very
warm
welcome
at
both villageSo
The
headman
at
Kabuk
has already adopted Jonathan and
Adam
as
his
grand
children and wants
them
to return..
We
are now in a
good
schedule of
classes and both students (Jonathan and Ad.im and teacher Mom are
enjoying i t . The boys are excellent students but, like all kids, are
happy
wh.^n
classes are over.
o
will Iiave a vacation from teaching

Praise

a 3 day sxir-

most
of the other
campers
and I am grateful fo r the extr a
time to prepare our
news
to you.
The mothers
with small children
had
to
stay behindo The purpose of this
survey is
to train for future linguis
ti c surveys
which we will
need to
make
to determine our a llocat ion in a
village ^d specific
language
needs„ As with al l
the
other training
we
are receiving here
at
jungle
camp ,
i t
is
invaluable,,
We
are
all
well
and happy ^d
enjoying our experiences here. Jonathan and
Adam have
lots of friends to play with and are learning
Pidgin
quite
well
as
they
speak
with the national workers here and when we vis-.t in the villages
have
been assigned a village family which lives close to camp
and we
visit
with
them
periodically
sometimes
spending
the night.
This
gives
us the opportunity to observe the
customs
of the people with
whom we
will live and work.
Wes
and I aren t losing any of the extra pounds we
picked
up
before leaving the States because we are eat ing so well here
but
we
are toning up some
muscles
from
al l
the hiking
and
exercise we
are getting.
Perhaps
the greatest blessing we are receiving here
is
the
fellowship we have with the other campers (translators and support work
ers) and the very fine Christian staff.
thank
God for bringing
us
together with them.

praise
God for answering prayers concerning this. We
also
have some
great
news
concerning property and housing for PBT. Ron Augsburger
has
been able to rent
two more small
apartments for
PBT
personnel in Madang
and
also arrangements are being
made
for leasing about
36
acres of land
south
of Madang. Application has been made to the government for per-
mssion to lease and plans for development have been presented
to them
Please be in prayer for the final okay and for funds to
develop

SURVEY REPORT:
KATIATI
Along
the
darkening

began
to realize
that
soon the
sun
would
be
completely
below
th e
horizon and we
would
have
to
finish
our
hike In the dark, with only
the
light from
our
flashlight.
We had
started
our
day
by rising before
daybreak
and leaving Madang in our Nissan by 6:15
A.M. Alta,
Jonathan, Adam, Martha Wade

I
rode
In
our
crowded
car
which
was
packed
with supplies for
the
trip. We made the first 200
kilometers
in 3 hours but,
after
turning on the
inland road, it
took
us
another
2
hours to
travel 75
kilometers. The
inland
road
winds
up,
down,
and
through
small
mountains and
fords several
swift
streams.
When
we
arrived
at
Josephstaal, we learned that several bridges had fallen (makeshift log bridges) and
that
Katiati was
accessible only
by foot. A KatiatI

Abukin
assured me thatanother log was there
but
Iwasn't sure. You see, thelog bridge Iwas
inching
across was
Invisible,

water
Well, what'sthe
difference , I thought, it's worth it. The survey had been a success and this shortcut would
cut two
hours
off our walk
back
to the Ramu River
Three days ago (October 27) we had left David Pryor's house (about 4 hours by car from
Madang) andheaded up-river one hour by
motorboat
to
Adarum. My
goal was tovisit asmany
villages as possible, collect sufficient language data to determine howmanydialects existed
in the language, and inform the people of the ministry of Pioneer BibleTranslators. Because
of the boys' school and the longwalks, 1went alone with two national guides. WeleftAdarum
and
walked
5 hours to
Manemong
where
weate,
talked,
recordeda
word list,
and spent the
night.
After a
heavy
rain
in
thenight, the people saidwe would have togoto
Jankit by (dugout)
canoe since the traiIwascovered by3-4feetof
water.
Thecanoe was twofeetwidebyabout 30
feet long. Everytime I stood up, it threatened to capsize so I had to sit for the entire fivehour
trip. Sunburned and seat-sore, I was glad to climbout and meet the people of Jankit. But,
praise
the
Lord people from all the other villages I had hoped to visit were there too for a
school party. Iwas able to get all the information I needed and return two days
early.
Even
more
the
Manemong people
offered to
show us
a
shortcut
Oneof
my
guidesstretchedout hishandand said,
Come
on,
ll
help
you .
So Ifelt around
in
the
murky
waters
until
I found the
log
and stepped over beside
him. WHUMP
Our
combined
weight was too much for the submerged log; it broke and the water
rose
suddenly
from knee-level towaist-deep.
Nevertheless, thank
you, Father, for a
good

ACTING BRANCH DIRECTOR
Upon arriving
in
Papua
New
Guinea lastDecember, Iwasgladto bea partofPioneer
Bible
Translators. The
other
PBT ers had
sent
plenty of information,
sponsored our
family s visa
applications, prepared housing, enrolled us
in
the
field
training course, andhadestablished a
credible work inthe country. DavidPryor, PBT s Branch Director inPapua NewGuinea
atthe
time of
our
arrival,
and
Ron Augsburger, the PBTDirectorof Support Services, have helped us
tremendously to adjust to life in this
country.
Last July, the members voted to elect John Pryor David s brother) to follow David as
Branch Director to
take
office in January 1981. However. John is on furlough in the states
until
May,
1981.
So, around the first of
November.
John wroteasking me to
work
as acting
Branch
Director until he
returned.
I accepted
after
a lot of consideration and prayers.
So now. fromJanuary to June, Iwill be serving other PBT ers as myfamily has been served.
The responsibilities of the Branch Directorfall into three main areas: government relations,
relations with other missions and the outreach and developmentof Pioneer BibleTranslators
in Papua New Guinea.
Working with PNG governmentofficials is both a privilege and an honor. Although Papua
New Guinea is an independent country under five years old, already it is recognized as a
leader in
the South
Pacific Islands community. Our good standing in
the
country, approval of
visas for new members, helpforourcommunity literacy programs, etc. all
depend
on an active
program of government relations by PBT s Branch Director,
Our translators work in several areas which
have
representatives from many different
missions. Good relations with
these
groups insure thatwhen a translation is completed, itwill

UKARUMPA
WORKSHOP
HOUSE PROJECT
Around Thanksgiving, our family moved from Madang up into the PNGhighlands to liveat
the
SIL
center
in Ukarumpa. As I have w/ritten before,
Pioneer
Bible
Translators
has
a need for
expert help in linguistic analysis, anthropological research, and translation which is only
available at workshops sponsored by the
Summer
Institute of Linguistics (SIL— the overseas
arm of Wycliffe Bible Translators).
Our
PBT
members
have been
unable
to
attend some
of
these valuable workshops
because
housing
was unavailable. Our response to this problem
was a house. To
this
point, over 13,000
has been raised
and
the house
is at
the lock up
stage but not liveable. Itwilltake around 7,500 more to complete this project and PBT s funds
for
the
project have
been used
up. Until this
house
Is
complete
we have no
guarantee
of being
able to attend workshops. The workshops and expe rt
help
we
receive
a t Ukarumpa are
necessary
to

the top
quality work we
are pledged
to
produce. Please
join with us In
prayer that
o
will provi e the jfun s and

time needed to complete this house by
September

FROM ALTA
But Mom, I need American money for the Sunday School offering . This was Adam s
exasperated
comment
to me as I handed him 20 toea as he was leaving
forSunday
School
our
first
Sunday
at Ukarumpa. We had arrived on Friday
and the boys
had
spent Saturday
exploring Wycliffe Bible
Translators
main center in
the
New Guinea highlands. They
hadn t
seen
such
a
concentration of
white
skins
and western
style
houses s ince our arrival in Papua
New
Guinea
and
Adam
thought he was back in America.
Jonathan, Adam and
I
had
flown up
on the M plane while Wes
and
Ron Augsburger drove
the car
up with the tools for
house
building.
After settling in quickly
the boys and
I
continued
their schooling
while Wes
and the
rest of
our
PBT
people began working on the house.
It was
very slow
at first
because
of
the
rain
and
mud.
Wes
became afflicted with a
strange
ailment in his legs which gave
us
quite a scare. We
were
so
thankful
fo r the
fine
care of the nurses at the cen te r and grateful
fo r
the
answered
prayers
of healing. We still
don t
know
what the
problem was.
Our
Christmas
in thehighlands
was
very nice. We received many
packages
from home
and
I
had taken our little
artificial
Christmas
tree
and decorat ions. With the pine trees In the front
yard and the cool breeze from the mountains it was almost like being back home . Ifixed a
turkey (a Butterball, no less, from Australia)
and
we
had
a
good
time with
the
rest of
the
PBT
work
crew.
While
we had a week s
vacation
from the
boys
classes I was able to get s ome
canning done. 1canned green beans, tomatoes, blackberries, swIss
chard
and rhubarb, all of
which are hard to get here in the lowlands. I had
taken
my
pressure canner
and canning jars up
with me in anticipation of all those goodies . It
was
a thrill to be with many of our Dallas SIL
friends the two
months
whiie
we
were
at
Ukarumpa
and
see how
the Lord has
led
in each
of
their lives.
Some
of them have allocated in villages
and begun
language work
and
others are in
the process
of
allocating.
We
are
anxious
to
make this
step
in
our
own
lives
and continue
to
ask for
your prayers
for
our
final decision. We
are
back in Madang now.
The boys and
I
are
busy
most of the day with school and Wes is filling in for our Director, John Pryor, until he
arrives back on
the field from furlough.
Thank you for
all th e Christmas cards and letters,
for
the
Christmas
gifts
and
most of all for your prayers and love. We need you
and
praiseGod for
